Forum: Don't let eateries misuse the Michelin name to promote themselves
11 new entries on Singapore's Bib Gourmand list, including three re-entries at Old Airport Road , July 17).
Is there a governing body that regulates the use of the Michelin Guide label in commercial promotion? I have observed that certain establishments continue to promote themselves as Michelin-recognised years after being listed, often without specifying the year. This creates the impression that they are current awardees, which may no longer be the case.
What I find more concerning is that some operators claim titles such as 'Singapore's No. 1 Michelin-Rated Best Selling (Dish)' despite having no record of being listed by the Michelin Guide at all. This not only misleads consumers, but also undermines the integrity and prestige of being recognised by the Michelin Guide.
Given the weight the Michelin Guide carries among both residents and tourists, I believe there should be greater accountability and clarity in how its name is used.
Shouldn't past awardees be required to state the year of the award in their promotional materials? And should there be penalties for those who make false claims?
Just as companies cannot misuse official certifications or trademarks (such as halal or ISO marks), businesses should not be allowed to exploit the Michelin brand for marketing gain without proper basis.
If left unchecked, such practices dilute the value of genuine accolades and mislead the public who rely on these endorsements when making dining decisions.

Nasi padang chain Hjh Maimunah to introduce colour-coded price labels, Lifestyle News
Popular nasi padang chain Hjh Maimunah will soon be launching colour-coded price labels for its dishes. This move comes in partnership with the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) and will be introduced to all nine of its outlets, starting with its Parkway Parade stall, Case announced in a press release today (July 24). Speciality menu items like tahu telur , ayam bakar and telur ikan paes will be labelled with grey tags while other items will be categorised by price range for easy identification. The announcement comes after the association had earlier this year announced its partnership with Koufu to launch similar labels for their economic rice stalls. Case said that there has been positive feedback from consumers on this initiative along with requests to extend it to nasi padang stalls. Speaking on the success of the clear price-labelling initiative with Koufu, Melvin Yong, president of Case, said that he's "glad that Case is partnering with HJH Maimunah" to expand this practice. "This will provide consumers with more transparent pricing and help customers make informed choices before they order. I thank Hjh Maimunah for taking the lead and I encourage all stall owners to adopt clear price labels for their dishes," he added. Mastura Binte Didih Ibrahim, managing director of Hjh Maimunah, also said regarding the initiative: "We are honoured to collaborate with Case on this important initiative. Price transparency is not only a mark of good business practice, but also a reflection of the trust and respect we have for our customers. "We believe this collaboration will set a positive example in the F&B industry and benefit the wider community." For those who aren't familiar, Hjh Maimunah is a Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognised chain of restaurants serving traditional Malay and Indonesian cuisine, namely nasi padang. [[nid:715984]]

Winning Michelin stars does not guarantee survival for Singapore restaurants
The new list of Michelin-star restaurants in Singapore will be out on Jul 24. But while winning the accolade puts the eateries on the culinary map, it is not always enough for them to thrive and survive. Rising costs and a competitive dining scene mean that chefs have to work harder than ever to stay above profit margins. Kate Low reports.

Food Picks: An elevated Cherry Garden by Chef Fei at Mandarin Oriental, Singapore
Find out what's new on ST website and app. The fish in the signature boneless crucian carp congee is meticulously deboned and gently cooked in a comforting porridge. SINGAPORE – Mandarin Oriental, Singapore's Chinese restaurant Cherry Garden has undergone a revamp and, since July 2, is relaunched as Cherry Garden by Chef Fei. The 52-year-old Chaoshan-born chef – whose name is Huang Jing Hui – is no stranger to Mandarin Oriental, as the chef-consultant for its sister properties across Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Jakarta, Beijing and Bangkok. His Guangzhou establishment, Jiang by Chef Fei, holds two Michelin stars and One Diamond in China's Black Pearl Restaurant Guide. While he is not based in Singapore, the charismatic chef has played an instrumental role in overhauling and elevating the restaurant's menu and training the team, which includes 39-year-old chef de cuisine Steven Luo from Guangzhou, who helms the kitchen here. Several dishes in the extensive menu here are similar to the ones at Jiang by Chef Fei, such as seared Xisha Island lobster with creamy garlic sauce (seasonal price) and crispy pork with sweet and sour sauce ($36). There is a strong focus on seafood dishes and two of them are worth splashing out for. One is the geoduck blanched with basil and chilli in a rich chicken broth (seasonal price). The other is the signature boneless crucian carp congee ($138++ a portion), in which the fish is meticulously deboned and cooked gently in a comforting porridge. The congee is also available on the dim sum menu at $18++ a portion. Geoduck blanched with basil and chilli in a rich chicken broth.
