Meerut teen killed by family for eloping with Dalit partner: Cops
The incident came to light on July 24 when villagers attending the funeral of the girl noticed bruises and strangulation marks on her neck, police said.
The villagers, who later alerted police and the girl's boyfriend, were told by the family that the girl had died of tuberculosis the previous day, they added.
The 19-year-old man's family filed a complaint at Baraut police station on July 24, after which the girl's father and six others were taken into custody.
During questioning, both confessed to the killing, SP Sarur Kumar Rai said, adding that four other relatives were also arrested in connection with the incident.
Police, on Saturday, exhumed the girl's body and ordered an autopsy, he added.
According to police, the girl, a resident of Padla village in Baghpat, was in a relationship with the Dalit man for the last 18 months. On July 15, the girl had fled to the Una district of Himachal Pradesh, officials said.
A day later, she was traced by the girl's family and brought back to their village, with the assurance that she would not be tortured.
The man's family, however, later received information that the girl's relatives had killed her in the name of saving family honour. On July 23, following her funeral, the boy's family approached the police.

2018 Bhima Koregaon violence: Inquiry commission gets 3-month extension
The Maharashtra government has given a fresh three-month extension to the inquiry commission probing the violence that took place on January 1, 2018 at Koregaon Bhima village in Pune district. The earlier extension granted to the Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission was till July 31. The comission has now been given extension till October 31 to submit its report, officials said. Violence had broken out near the Koregaon Bhima war memorial in Pune district on January 1, 2018, a day after the Elgar Parishad conclave was held in Pune. Dalits visit the memorial in large numbers as it commemorates the victory of British forces, which included Dalit soldiers, over the army of the Brahmin Peshwa rulers of Pune in 1818. The two-member commission, comprising retired chief justice of Calcutta High Court J N Patel and former Maharashtra chief secretary Sumit Mullick, is probing the circumstances that triggered the riots.

‘No one has authority to moral police others'—Hyderabad Police arrests man ‘harassing' interfaith duo
On 29 July, Raheel took umbrage that C. Neeraj, a 24-year-old IT employee, was accompanied by his Muslim colleague, who was wearing a hijab. He allegedly started filming them on his mobile phone, violating their privacy, and later, he circulated the video on social media. He also started abusing and threatening the duo with dire consequences, and then physically assaulted them, the police said. Neeraj and the woman were forced to flee the spot, but Raheel allegedly followed close behind and further intimidated the duo by continuing to record them on his phone until they reached the nearby Himayatnagar area. The police have identified the accused as Mohammed Raheel, a 24-year-old driver working with Rapido. Hyderabad: A Muslim man from the Charminar area has been arrested for allegedly 'moral policing' and assaulting a Hindu man and a Muslim woman spending time on NTR Marg near the Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad, Hyderabad Police said Saturday. Neeraj lodged a police complaint on 30 July, after which the police arrested Raheel from the Old City. K. Shilpavalli, deputy commissioner of police (central zone), Hyderabad Police, said that investigations showed that Raheel deliberately shared the video to provoke communal sentiments, invade personal privacy, and promote divisive narratives. 'The individual who recorded and transmitted the video has been arrested. Relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act have been invoked; further investigation is ongoing, including identifying those managing and promoting such social media accounts,' said the DCP in a statement. Raheel allegedly disseminated the video on social media, including Instagram and X, and it rapidly gained widespread attention on the platforms. 'This exposure has heightened the risk of potential attacks on the victims, posing a threat to them and their family members from communally motivated individuals,' stated the DCP after Raheel's arrest. Raheel has been booked under sections 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), 74 (assault or criminal force against a woman), 79 (insult of a woman's modesty), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 115(1) (voluntarily causing harm), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 131 (assault or criminal force), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS, and Section 67 of the IT Act (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form). The DCP, in her statement, warned the general public against indulging in such acts or disturbing social harmony in Hyderabad. 'Let it be made absolutely clear: no person or group has the authority to moral police others, harass individuals based on their personal choices, or portray such actions as justified under any communal or ideological pretext. Such acts are criminal in nature and will be dealt with strictly, irrespective of the identity or affiliation of the offender,' she added. The police also warned people from forwarding, or reacting to such videos or communal content, 'even in outrage or criticism'. Anyone found indulging in such acts will be liable for aiding the spread of illegal or inflammatory material, the police added. 'Issues concerning interfaith relationships, societal norms, or community sensitivities require thoughtful handling—not sensationalism,' added the DCP in her statement. Koregaon Bhima violence: Sharad Pawar seeks six weeks time to reply on Ambedkar's application
Senior politician and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar recently sought six weeks from the Koregaon Bhima Commission of Inquiry for replying to an application filed by Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar in connection with a letter that he had given to former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in January 2020. In his application before the commission filed in February this year, Ambedkar claimed that on January 24, 2020, Sharad Pawar had given a letter to then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stating that the violence that broke out in Koregaon Bhima was a conspiracy hatched by the previous government under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis. Along with his application, Ambedkar had attached a news report, which stated that Pawar's letter to Uddhav Thackeray demanded the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Koregaon-Bhima violence and accused the Fadnavis government of protecting the conspirators. Ambedkar had requested the commission to pass an order asking Pawar to submit a copy of this letter that he had given to Uddhav Thackeray, along with related documents. Ambedkar had also requested the commission that if required, Pawar should be called again to depose as a witness. On April 23 this year, advocate Kiran Kadam, on behalf of Ambedkar, filed an application at the Commission, with a request to issue a notice to Pawar for producing the documents related to the letter. The commission had then twice sent a letter to Pawar, requesting him to submit the 'documents in question', either personally or through his attorney. When contacted, V V Palnitkar, commission's secretary, confirmed that on July 24, Pawar had through his lawyer sought six weeks time to file his reply in this matter. Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray had opposed Ambedkar's application to call Pawar again for deposing as a witness. Hiray had claimed this was an attempt (by Ambedkar) to create 'sensationalisation' for political purposes and delay the commission's work. Hiray stated that Sharad Pawar had deposed before the Commission in Mumbai on May 5, 2022, and was examined by different lawyers. Hiray also said that Pawar had himself never mentioned about a letter that was sent to Uddhav Thackeray — as claimed by Ambedkar — before the commission. Meanwhile, the state government has granted yet another extension to the Commission till October 31 this year. An order in this regard was passed by Chetan Nikam, deputy secretary, state home department, on July 30. This is the 19th extension given to the two member commission led by retired high court justice J N Patel. The commission was formed for probing the Koregaon Bhima violence of January 1, 2018, in which one person died and several others were injured. The Commission's tenure had to be repeatedly extended to allow it to complete its work. The commission would now conduct its hearings in Pune around August 25.
