Kettering Health cyberattack shuts down all systems, patients receiving scam calls
The Dayton-based hospital group and Cincinnati Bengals' official health care provider confirmed May 20 it is experiencing a cybersecurity attack due to unauthorized access to its network, according to a statement on Kettering Health's website.
The group first announced it was experiencing a system-wide technology outage around 10:30 a.m., limiting its ability to access "certain patient care systems" across the organization. All elective inpatient and outpatient procedures at its facilities were canceled for the day.
By about 11 a.m., Kettering Health confirmed it was a cyberattack.
As the day continued, patients began reporting scam calls from persons claiming to be Kettering Health team members, requesting credit card payments for medical expenses. The hospital group said it has not been established whether the scam calls are connected to the system-wide technology outage.
"While it is customary for Kettering Health to contact patients by phone to discuss payment options for medical bills, out of an abundance of caution, we will not be making calls to ask for or receive payment over the phone until further notice," the company said in a statement.
Patients are encouraged to report scam calls to local law enforcement.
As of 7 p.m., Kettering Health's systems were still offline. The hospital said emergency rooms and clinics remain open to patients.
Kettering Health has not confirmed whether patient information has been compromised as a result of the cyberattack. The Enquirer has reached out to the hospital group for more information.

Alembic Pharma acquires UK-based Utility Therapeutics for $12 million to expand US presence
Alembic Pharmaceuticals Inc., the wholly owned US subsidiary of Alembic Pharmaceuticals Limited, has announced the acquisition of UK-based Utility Therapeutics Ltd. This strategic move marks Alembic's entry into the branded anti-infective segment in the United States, particularly focusing on treatments for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Utility Therapeutics is engaged in developing pharmaceutical products aimed at combating UTIs, a widespread medical condition in the US. The acquisition brings two key assets into Alembic's fold — 'Pivya,' an FDA-approved treatment for uncomplicated UTIs, and 'MEC,' a pipeline product currently under development to address complicated UTI cases. Alembic Pharmaceuticals sees this acquisition as a significant step towards strengthening its presence in the US market with branded specialty products. The deal allows Alembic to market Utility's assets in the US, leveraging the regulatory approvals already in place and continuing the development of promising pipeline therapies. The total consideration for the acquisition is expected to be around $12 million, paid in a staggered manner depending on the achievement of specific milestones. It also includes a provision for profit sharing based on future earnings generated by Utility's products. The transaction does not fall under the related party category, and none of the promoters or group companies have any financial interest in the deal. Completion of the acquisition is anticipated within approximately 30 days, and no additional regulatory approvals are required. This acquisition aligns with Alembic's strategy of expanding its global footprint and diversifying its product offerings in regulated markets like the US. 'We are pleased to close the acquisition of Lehan and bring this talented and highly motivated team into the Viemed family,' said Viemed Chief Executive Officer Casey Hoyt. 'Lehan's 80-year track record and brand recognition in a large and fast-growing market along with its preferred contracts and fulfillment expertise make for a powerful combination with our national scale, unique care delivery model and existing payer relationships to serve a broader patient population.' Viemed funded the acquisition through a combination of cash on hand and borrowings from its existing credit facilities.
