Sara Kouskova hangs on to win in Teneriffe, top 20 for Lauren Walsh

RTÉ News08-06-2025
Sara Kouskova hung on to win the Tenerife Women's Open by a shot, with Ireland's Lauren Walsh five adrift of the winner after a closing 72.
Czech player Kouskova, after claiming the Jabra Ladies Open a fortnight ago, finished with a 71 to stand on nine under, just ahead of Germany's Helen Briem.
The winner made five birdies in her round but a bogey on seven and a double-bogey six on the par-four 16th threatened to derail her quest at Abama Golf. A couple of pars to finish kept here out in front, this after Briem made birdie on 17.

For Walsh, Sunday's round was an improvement of the horror-show of her 77 on Saturday, though dropped shots on 16 and 18 proved costly as she aimed for a higher position, settling in the end for a share of 14th on four under.

What time and TV channel is Rangers v Panathinaikos on in the Champions League?

Rangers face Panathinaikos in Russell Martin's first competitive game in charge at Ibrox. It's a massive UEFA Champions League second round qualifier, with Rangers at home first before travelling to the scorching heat of Athens next week. The winners of the tie will face Czech side Viktoria Plzen or Swiss outfit Servette in the next qualifying round. Rangers have to go through three qualifying rounds if they are to reach the Champions League group stage. They lost 3-1 on aggregate to Dynamo Kiev in the third qualifying round last year. Here's what you need to know: Where and when is it? The match takes place at Ibrox on Wednesday, July 22. What time is kick-off? The action is scheduled to get under way at 7.45pm. What TV channel is it on? Premier Sports 1 will show the match live, with their coverage starting at 7.15pm. Quotes corner Rangers manager Russell Martin: "It's not going to be a season-defining game. It's not. It's a really, really big game. "The season is a long season. We'll be defined by what we do between now and May. "I've been so pleased over four weeks, but it's not a long time. Tomorrow is going to be a real big test for us to see how far along we are and see how much work we have to do. "That's the most interesting and exciting bit for us as a coaching staff, is that tomorrow we will learn a lot about the group and learn a lot about what we need to prioritise moving forward over the next few weeks. "One of the things that has to come out of it is that the supporters leave feeling positively about their team, their new look, the way it is going to start to shape up. "Hopefully, the fans will leave feeling excited about what is to come and start feeling a real connection because I think, if we can be connected, the whole club, Ibrox here, the supporters. If this club has that, with that energy, I think it is going to take some stopping." Betting odds Rangers win: 7/10 Panathinaikos win: 4/1 Draw: 29/10

Denis Frimpong brands opponent 'sloppy' ahead of showdown in Germany

Ireland MMA fighter Denis Frimpong is returning to the octagon and, as usual, he's not mincing his words with opponent Peter Gabal. Lightweight Frimpong will take on his Czech challenger at Festhalle Frankfurt in Germany as part of OKTAGON 76. The 30-year-old, from Dublin, is never afraid to trash-talk and has had a back-and-forth with Gabal over the past couple of years. Now established in the lightweight division's top 10 rankings, "The Menace" views his upcoming fight as another crucial step toward a shot at the title as he sits with a 6-2 record, while Gabal is 7-3. Speaking ahead of the fight, Frimpong said: "I think Peter Gabal is a sloppy, less refined version of Callum Mullen and a similar size. The fight is going to go similarly to that one, except I'm going to finish him in the second round - TKO or straight knockout. "I love the German crowd and I love the German people. It's good to be in the red corner finally and not fighting a German-on-German soil, so I'm going to be the fan favourite. 'The fan base over there are starting to jump on board, and I've got a nice little walkout song ready for them. It's going to be a good night - as always!" OKTAGON 76 will also highlight a strong lineup of notable German talent. Set to compete are Lom-Ali Eskiev, hard-hitting heavyweight Patrick Vespaziani, and rapidly rising women's prospect Alina Dalaslan. The card is also expected to feature UFC veteran Alan Omer, promising up-and-comer Fedor Duric, and Tamerlan Dulatov, the brother of Islam Dulatov.
