Residents were moved to shelters from communities near the Fuego volcano, located 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the capital Guatemala City.
Advertisement 'We prefer to leave rather than mourn the death of everyone in the village later,' Celsa Perez, 25, told AFP. The government suspended local school activities and closed a road linking the south of the country to the colonial city of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, disaster coordination agency Conred reported. There have been several such mass evacuations in recent years because Fuego erupted, including in March of this year. In 2018, 215 people were killed and a similar number left missing when rivers of lava poured down the volcano's slopes, devastating a village. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Shahelmey stresses grassroots role in Sabah Maju Jaya plan success
Published on: Monday, June 30, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 Text Size: 'This is to ensure that any problems can be brought forward for resolution, and it highlights the importance of two-way engagement between the people and responsible authorities on the ground,' Shahelmey said. PUTATAN: The people have been urged to continue serving as the 'eyes and ears' of the State Government in realising the goals of governance and ensuring socio-economic balance across Sabah. Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya said a holistic partnership between grassroots communities and the government was vital, particularly in the ongoing implementation of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan. 'Whatever issues arise in your respective areas, I encourage the community to stay in close communication with agencies such as UPPM, JPKK, JKDM and others. 'This is to ensure that any problems can be brought forward for resolution, and it highlights the importance of two-way engagement between the people and responsible authorities on the ground,' he said. Shahelmey, who is also the Tanjung Keramat Assemblyman, was speaking at the launch of the Semangat Madani Tanjung Keramat programme held at Dewan Serbaguna Muhibbah in Taman Jumbo, here, Saturday. Earlier, the community-focused programme saw the participation of over 100 residents from various age groups who took part in a range of activities. Among the highlights were a neighbourhood gotong-royong (communal clean-up) and a colouring competition for children in the area. Commenting on the event, Shahelmey said the active involvement of the local community reflected growing awareness of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and safety in their surroundings. 'With initiatives like this, participants not only strengthen community bonds but also build greater awareness about keeping the environment clean, safe and harmonious. 'This aligns well with the State Government's call for unity among all levels of society in order to foster more resilient and competitive communities in the future,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: An experienced hiker said it is not surprising to read about climbers suffering injuries while tackling Mount Kinabalu as they probably take Malaysia's highest peak for granted. She shared her recent experience of being rescued, in the hope it might inform and inspire others planning theirs. The Kuala Lumpur-based PR consultant, said her experience revealed both the mountain's unforgiving terrain and the exceptional response capabilities of Sabah's emergency teams. India probing all angles in Air India crash, says minister
NEW DELHI: An Indian aviation minister on Sunday said investigators were probing "all angles" behind an Air India crash when asked by media about possible sabotage. All but one of the 242 people on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner were killed when it crashed in the western city of Ahmedabad on June 12. Authorities have identified 19 others who died on the ground, but a police source told AFP after the crash that the toll was 38. India's minister of state for civil aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, said the investigation was looking at "all angles" when asked specifically about possible "sabotage", in an interview with Indian news channel NDTV. "It has never happened before that both engines have shut off together," Mohol said earlier in the interview, in reference to theories by some experts of possible dual-engine failure. The minister added that until the investigation report is published, it would be premature to comment on the cause. The team appointed to investigate the crash started extracting data from the plane's cockpit voice and flight data recorders this week, in an attempt to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the disaster. Air India has said that the plane was "well-maintained" and that the pilots were accomplished flyers.-AFP
