The Best Gadgets of June 2025
With developer conference season in the rearview mirror—Google gave us boatloads of AI, Android XR smart glasses, and a hell of a lot of Veo 3 slop, and Apple ushered in 'Liquid Glass' for all of its '26' software—we can now turn our full attention back to checking out the shiny and comforting world of gadgets because it's just goddamn depressing everywhere else you look. If it's not the technoking being a dingus again, it's the world's most powerful man grifting with a shitty gold Android phone that definitely can't be made in the U.S. running on a shitty mobile network, or—sigh—war. So yes, it's perfectly fine to obsess about the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World (or Labubus if that's more your thing). We need some tech toys to be the light at the end of the tunnel. Here's what held our attention this month. The biggest game system launch in years—arguably the most exciting product release of the year—finally arrived after months of anticipation, and it didn't disappoint. The FOMO for the Switch 2 was very real—so much so that in-person midnight launches returned, and they were, um, fun? Nintendo's own open-world Mario Kart World and CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 led the way, showcasing how much more powerful but still fun an iterative version of the handheld/console hybrid could be. Games like Donkey Kong Bananza (launching on July 17) and future Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda games are no doubt coming, but the Switch 2's beefier hardware alone is enough to breathe new life into original Switch games—in many cases, improving graphics and frame rates to more acceptable 2025 standards. See Nintendo Switch 2 at Walmart See Switch 2+ Mario Kart World Bundle at Walmart We know—the caveat with Oppo phones is that they're not sold in the U.S. But that doesn't mean we should ignore the innovation from Chinese tech brands. Take Oppo's Find X8 Ultra… it has possibly the best camera system in any smartphone to date. If you can look beyond the many parts of the software that are a direct clone of iOS, there's a quad-lens camera system that captures photos nearly rivaling what you get on a standalone point-and-shoot camera. iPhone, Samsung Galaxy phones, and Pixels may be the most popular cameras in pockets, but the image and video quality from the Find X8 Ultra has leapfrogged them. Setting aside the fact that an Xbox founding member thinks that the Asus ROG Xbox Ally handheld marks the end of Xbox hardware, if you've been waiting for a portable version to play Xbox games, this sorta whets the appetite. It's not the prettiest handheld out there, and even though it's not made by Microsoft, it at least has the specs to play console-level games with its more optimized version of Windows. Like our own Kyle Barr said, Xboxes are basically becoming PCs, which he thinks is a good thing for gamers. If you run or work out often—even if you're not a professional athlete—these Nike x Hyperice Hyperboots may aid in recovery, according to our reviewer Claire Maldarelli who tested the compression boots. The science doesn't necessarily back up the Hyperboots helping your feet recover faster, but there's no denying that you'll get the 'fresh legs' feeling after wearing them before and after runs. At $900, they're kind of pricey, and the chunky design is gonna get you some stares if you wear them outdoors. But if you're looking for any and every way to protect your feet, the Hyperboots are worth checking out. When it comes to smartwatches, one size simply doesn't fit all wrists. Apple figured this out 10 years ago and has sold the non-Ultra version of the Apple Watch in two sizes. Google got the message last year, finally offering a larger 45mm Pixel Watch alongside the 41mm model. Now OnePlus is doing the same, but in reverse, adding a smaller 43mm version of its OnePlus Watch after launching the 46mm size earlier in the year. Judging from the comments, there are a lot of people with smaller wrists who are looking forward to a stylish round-shaped smartwatch. The SteamOS version of the Legion Go S made our list of best gadgets of May 2025, but it gets another mention now that we've reviewed it. With two versions—a $600 base model and a higher-end $830 device with a faster processor—and Valve's excellent SteamOS operating system, these game handhelds kick the ass of the Windows edition in every way. We think it's the best alternative to the Steam Deck, which is the gold standard when it comes to these kinds of handhelds. See Legion Go S at Best Buy Ray-Ban Meta AI smart glasses have proven to be a hit—a small hit, but a hit nonetheless. Naturally, Meta's not wasting any time moving in for the kill. The company this month announced a new partnership with eyewear brand Oakley to sell HSTN Performance AI glasses. They're pronounced 'how-stuhn' and compared to Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, they've got higher-resolution cameras that can capture at 3K resolution and longer battery life (up to 19 hours on standby). They're also clearly made for adventure seekers and anybody who chugs Red Bulls. The one company that's probably shaking in its boots right now is GoPro. Meta's coming for the company's POV lunch. Now we wait and see whether GoPro fires back with its own camera glasses. Another Xbox-branded gadget? Hey, we're not the ones in charge of the announcements; we just report about them. Unrelated to the Asus ROG Xbox Ally, which isn't coming out until later this year, the Meta Quest 3S Xbox Edition is really just a bundle with a black-colored Quest 3S headset, the noggin-cradling Elite Strap, and an Xbox controller thrown in. The package also gets you three months of Game Pass Ultimate. In total, you're saving around $95. It's a nice-looking headset; just don't pay scalper prices on eBay. July Games Release Dates 2025 – What's New on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors 2025 has already seen some massive video game releases – as well as the launch of a brand-new console in the Nintendo Switch 2 – and it doesn't look to be letting up anytime soon. July is typically a quiet month for video game releases, but with the launch of the Switch 2 and developers around the world trying to make the most of the Summer, gamers have plenty to look forward to on Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. We've put together this list of the most anticipated games releasing in July 2025, including their release date, release platforms, and trailers where available. EA Sports College Football 26 – July 10 Release platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S Summer is a good time of year for sports game fans, with usually a few great titles getting released throughout the season. 2025 is no different, and while Madden is still a little while away – that's not due until August – there's plenty of football on offer this July with the release of EA Sports College Football 26. It's nominally dated for July 10, 2025, but buyers of the deluxe edition can start playing three days earlier, on July 7, 2025. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 – July 11 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC Activision blew everyone away with its remake of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 in 2021, and it's back for more with remakes of the next two games. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 is a package containing remakes of some of the best games in the series, with THPS 3 especially being one of the highest-rated games of all time on Metacritic. There are a few changes to THPS 4, which has changed from an open world structure to the same timed structure as the first three games, but it's likely to be a fantastic release nonetheless, and it's coming to basically every platform under the sun. Donkey Kong Bananza – July 17 Release platform: Nintendo Switch 2 Donkey Kong in his Kong Bananza form in Donkey Kong Bananza. Donkey Kong in his Kong Bananza form in Donkey Kong Bananza. Nintendo The first Nintendo first-party game since the release of the Switch 2, Donkey Kong Bananza is a reinvention for gaming's greatest ape, bringing huge open levels, terrain destruction and manipulation, and what looks to be a surprisingly deep story. Last month's Donkey Kong Bananza Direct showed the game looking utterly phenomenal, and it could very well turn out to be one of the best Nintendo games ever made. Shadow Labyrinth – July 17 Release platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC Releasing on the same day as Donkey Kong Bananza is a strange little game developed by Bandai Namco called Shadow Labyrinth. The name might not give it away too much, but this is actually a dark and gritty Metroidvania take on Pac-Man, of all things, and it looks bizarre and quite fun. The game was teased with an episode of the anthology series Secret Level, which acts as a prequel to the game, so you might want to catch up on the lore before you get stuck in. Wildgate – July 22 Release platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC Wildgate is a fascinating PVP space combat game described by developer Moonshot Games as a "crew-based first-person shooter" where players team up to pilot a ship, engage in space combat and ship-to-ship raids, and try to either escape or be the last ship standing. Moonshot Games is one of the studios under the Dreamhaven banner, a new developer and publisher founded in 2020 by former Blizzard co-founder Michael Morhaime and staffed with Blizzard veterans. It promises to be a very interesting game, so it's definitely one to keep an eye on. Monument Valley 3 – July 22 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC The third game in the Monument Valley series promises to bring mind-bending puzzles and chill vibes to players, much like the first two games. Those games were both received very well, and are among the most celebrated of indie puzzle games of all time. The game is already out on mobile devices for subscribers to Netflix, but on July 22 it's coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers – July 24 Release platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC There's no shortage of soulslikes on the market, but Wuchang: Fallen Feathers looks like it could bring a fascinating new dynamic to the genre. This game has faster, more aggressive combat that pushes the focus onto dodging rather than parrying, which should lead to some very different – and likely very difficult – combat. No Sleep For Kaname Date – From AI: The Somnium Files – July 25 Release platforms: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC AI: The Somnium Files was a fantastic investigation game, and its sequel, while great, was missing everyone's favorite protagonist from the first game. No Sleep For Kaname Date brings the eponymous character back into action, with a new canon game set in-between the first game in the second. This game brings new escape room sections to the game, alongside the traditional investigation and Somnium sections, so it should be very interesting for fans of the series. Grounded 2 – July 29 Release platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (early access) Obsidian Entertainment is on a roll this year, having released Avowed earlier this year, and The Outer Worlds 2 on the way later this year. Somehow, the developer also managed to squeeze in a sequel to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids-inspired Grounded. The first game was a massive hit, and Grounded 2 looks to be even bigger — or smaller, depending on how you look at it. Either way, this is launching into early access this July, so it won't be entirely finished or get a wider release just yet, but if Grounded is anything to go by it should be pretty good from the get-go either way. Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game – July 29 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC Tales of the Shire is a cozy little life-sim game that's been in development for quite some time. You get to cook, fish, explore, and customize your hobbit home — a lovely and cozy hobbit lifestyle without any cursed rings and demonic invaders. This was supposed to be released in 2024, but it's finally almost here, and will be playable on just about any platform you'd want to play it on. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound – July 31 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC The Ninja Gaiden series has long held a reputation as an unforgiving and fast-paced hack-and-slash game, and the newest entry in the series looks to be no different. It's a side-scrolling action game developed by The Game Kitchen, best known for its similarly brutal Blasphemous games, so it should be pretty good, and exactly what fans of the Ninja Gaiden series are looking for.

Date Everything! From the Comfort of Your Anthropomorphic Home
The frenzy around the Nintendo Switch 2 included the release of Mario Kart World, which our critic said was an elegant experience but one without any oil drips or skid marks. Another critic called The Alters, a sci-fi adventure about a stranded space miner who can select alternative life paths, an extraordinary survival game. Here are three other games you may have missed this month: Date Everything! Reviewed on the Nintendo Switch 2. Also available on the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Date Everything! stands out as a bright, welcoming dating simulation with an unusually comely twist. You meet and consider the attributes of everyday objects that come alive as humans. It's surprising to witness how magnetically sexy they are. After being replaced by A.I. at a megacorporation, you head home to the cold solace of a desktop computer. A drone delivers special glasses that bear a red heart above the bridge. Once you don the spectacles, the magic of anthropomorphism occurs. In Date Everything!, there is no requirement to leave home for nervous flirtation at a bar. One hundred potential mates emerge from a light switch, a fireplace, a refrigerator, a dust bunny, or even a piano. Phoenicia, a woman of color with a bald head who was created from a smartphone, was my early favorite. Joyful and positive, she emanated strength and empathy. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
