NIA to probe loot of explosives by Maoists from J'khand-Odisha border
Rourkela police have arrested Maoist informer George Munda (43), a local, for allegedly collaborating with Maoists from Jharkhand in the theft of 5,000 kg of gelatin sticks. Around 3,800 kg of explosives have been recovered.
"Considering the gravity of the offence, NIA has obtained an order from a designated court in Bhubaneswar to suo motu take over the probe from the state police. They will officially take over the case files in a day or two.
NIA was assisting police in the investigation. An NIA team had visited the crime scene at the stone quarry in Banko on May 28," a senior police officer told TOI.
NIA plans to interrogate Munda in their custody to establish 'forward and backward' linkages related to the offence having multi-state ramification. Munda had several meetings with Maoist leader Anmol, alias Lalchand Hembram, before the theft. His arrest raised concerns for security agencies, as Sundargarh had been declared Maoist-free by the Centre in April 2024.

The police officer added, "Given the Centre's target to wipe out Maoism from the country by March 2026, NIA's involvement in the case is essential to unravel a potential bigger anti-national crime plan of the rebels."
It is the first case undertaken by NIA's Odisha branch following the establishment of its police station in Bhubaneswar last month, police said.

Supreme Court to hear Yashwant Varma's petition on Monday
NEW DELHI: A Supreme Court bench led by Justice Dipankar Datta will hear on Monday Justice Yashwant Varma's petition challenging the in-house inquiry report accusing him of being complicit in sacks of cash found at his official residence and then CJI Sanjiv Khanna's decision to send the report to the President and the PM with the recommendation for his removal. Justice Varma will be represented by a battery of senior advocates - Kapil Sibal , Mukul Rohatgi, Rakesh Dwivedi, Siddharth Luthra and Siddharth Aggarwal. Since most senior SC judges were part of the collegium and in some way or the other acquainted with the administrative proceedings relating to Justice Varma, who was repatriated to Allahabad HC from Delhi after the discovery of cash at his residence, CJI Gavai has assigned hearing of the petition to a bench led by Justice Datta. When then CJI Khanna was heading the collegium, Justices Gavai, Surya Kant and Vikram Nath were part of it. Justice Datta is 10th in seniority among Supreme Court judges. CJI Gavai had on Wednesday recused from hearing Justice Varma's petition on the ground that he was part of the administrative process relating to transfer of the judge from Delhi HC to his parent Allahabad HC. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal had requested a bench led by CJI Gavai on Wednesday for an urgent hearing on Justice Varma's petition even as the Lok Sabha speaker commenced proceedings relating to a notice for removal of the judge signed by more than 150 MPs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Sibal had told the CJI that Justice Varma's petition raised some important constitutional questions relating to the in-house report and the recommendation for his removal. In his petition, Justice Varma has questioned why Delhi Police and Delhi Fire Service personnel, who discovered the cash, did not seize it or prepare a 'panchnama' (statement of witnesses in writing corroborating the discovery of cash), which alone could have been admissible evidence.

Security lapses exposed as Jaipur Metro coach vandalised
Jaipur: An unidentified miscreant breached the Mansarovar Metro Station yard late Tuesday night and defaced a parked coach with graffiti, prompting questions over surveillance gaps in Jaipur Metro's security infrastructure. Metro authorities discovered the vandalism early Wednesday morning when the train was taken out for daily operations. The coach, stationed in an outer yard area overnight, was spray-painted with English words and symbols. Officials immediately filed an FIR at the Jaipur Metro Rail Police Station. "A young man is believed to have entered the yard under the cover of darkness and painted on the coach. The act was discovered around 10:50 PM," a metro official said. The train was parked since evening and was scheduled to resume service at 5:30 AM. Preliminary investigations suggest that the graffiti was done in a blind spot—an area not covered by CCTV cameras. Metro station authorities confirmed that the affected section of the yard lacked adequate surveillance. Jaipur Police also expressed concern over longstanding vulnerabilities in the Metro's surveillance system. "The CCTV network is patchy and far from foolproof. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo Several areas—including parts of the yard—remain outside the camera coverage," said a senior official. "We raised this issue with Metro authorities in the past, but no corrective action was taken." The incident has not only raised alarm over physical security but also highlighted systemic lapses in inter-agency communication. Police officials said the lack of comprehensive CCTV coverage leaves the metro system exposed to vandalism and potential security threats. Metro officials said they are reviewing security protocols and will consider police recommendations for upgrading the surveillance network. The accused remains unidentified. Police are analysing available footage from nearby cameras and have launched an investigation to track down the suspect.
