Rob Braslin: the 10 funniest things I have ever seen (on the internet)

The Guardian26-02-2025
The party sort of feels over for the internet. We all know when a house party is over, it's when everyone is cooked, the music has been turned down a little and we are all sitting around the old smart TV like our grandparents used to do and taking turns showing our favourite funny videos. The internet has been really fun, in fact it's still really good. Email is the best it's ever been! Here's to many more years of the 'net and these are 10 things that make me laugh AND think!
This is from the pilot episode of a sketch series called All Good If Not by the brilliant Jack Druce. The crew behind these sketches are some of the funniest buggers in the country, and this sketch highlights their brilliance. Tall uncles do have a lot of power. I love this kind of sketch where it keeps breaking down how someone as ridiculous as Uncle Sam could come to be and then it comes full circle until it makes sense. Does that make sense?
Conan is one of my all time comedy heroes. He wrote for The Simpsons and for Saturday Night Live. I consider him the best comedy writer of all time. Late Night with Conan O'Brien was the first show I remember making sure I had taped or would use all my good karma to stay up late and watch when I was 10. I love this clip, because we see Conan do a very funny bit with the guy who he considers the best comedy writer, the legendary Jim Downey, who plays this overly sincere version of himself and Conan hams it up for his podcast audience.
A great ice breaker video when showing off your favourite videos to new friends. Simple, short and you can talk about In the Air Tonight, a certified banger. I guarantee, someone will bring up the factoid that this song is about the drummer from Genesis, Phil Collins, watching someone watch someone drowning. Just laugh at the silly deer and move on to the next video.
Normally prank videos are trash, and my least favourite ones are people messing with someone just trying to do their job. I really liked this one though, just 'cos there is commitment to the bit; it's a great Stone Cold Steve Austin impersonation and they aren't being a complete dickhead to the person working. There's a lot to love about this: the E.T. finger waving and the minor break of character to adjust the mask. It's funny just because it's so set up to fail, the guy is being genuinely funny (well maybe it's funnier if you are a wrestling fan, I don't know) and the people doing their job at the fast food joint have little laugh, so it's not evil.
Tom McGovern sings this John Cougar Mellencamp hit song. There's a masterstroke in this video that really took me by surprise. You'll see it in the brief second camera shot. I love that this guy is hanging out in his walk-in wardrobe making his dreams come true, like so many comedians.
Here is a weird video I loved when I was a teenager. I showed it at a house party recently and it bombed. Not even crickets. Just a void. My blood was pumping in my ears. Then someone showed a James Corden Carpool Karaoke clip and we all laughed again. I still love this video and the close circle of friends I had in 2007 loved it. That's all that matters.
Conner O'Malley has been making the best videos on the internet as of late, they are effectively becoming better than most feature films out at the moment, and I believe there are Letterboxd reviews of them, which is a key sign you have made it. The deep intellectual dark web has a new silent guardian with a megaphone and this is a great intro into Conner's sick sad world! Watch his video Rap World after this, it's feature film-length brilliance.
This video shows a simple yet effective way to shut down a heckler.
Jim Bakker is a TV evangelist who was arrested in the 80s for stealing money from the church he led. These days he hosts a show where he sells doomsday prepping foods, like big gross tubs of sloppy foods. He had this bloke called Kevin come and sing a song about the products. I'm not about the doomsday prepping life, but this song has me thinking we are doomed. Check out Vic Berger's edits of Jim Bakker.
Pete Weber is the bad boy of tenpin bowling. In this clip he wins a bowling tournament and is thrilled about it and screams some words and it sounds demonic. It's more than that really – you dig deeper and see how high the stakes were. There's an interview with Pete where he explains exactly why he said 'Who do you think you are?I am!' and it's perfect. He isn't as scary as he seems.

The Simpsons may be genius – but it's also evil

Marge Simpson is dead. But does anyone care? I've written loads of pieces over the years about the genius of The Simpsons – how extraordinarily prescient it is (most famously when, in 2000, it predicted a Trump presidency), how delightful the subplots are, how it works on so many levels – but I'm now beginning to suspect that all along it was a honeytrap designed to seduce you and your children into screen zombiedom. Obviously I don't want to push the 'TV is bad for you' argument too hard because I might be out of a job. But when I look at mothers in train carriages trying to distract their toddlers with iPhones or I see the way my bright and brilliant granddaughter gets sucked into the soulless void (and sly agenda-pushing) of garish, hyper-high-definition TV cartoons, I do worry what's happening to their brains and I don't think it's good. The Simpsons is, of course, perfectly well aware of this. The theme of the final episode of the 36th(!) season is the effects on Bart and his sister of exposure to the ultra-violent Itchy & Scratchy Show. There's a typically neat joke where Marge pops out to do some shopping and says to Homer '…and don't just prop them in front of the TV, eat Twinkies and take a nap'. Homer – you can tell this is a flashback because he still has some hair and is leafing through Partially Bald Monthly – only hears the part that begins after the word 'don't'. Shortly afterwards, the kids burst in saying, 'Homer, we're bored. We need something to do.' Homer puts on a new show about a sadistic mouse doing things so impossibly grotesque and disgusting to a cartoon cat that it would surely never have been permitted an airing on TV watched by children. But because we are watching it within the context of a family-friendly cartoon called The Simpsons, and because it's 'satire', somehow it becomes OK. Then we flash forward to the future. Bart and Lisa are no longer talking to one another. The Itchy & Scratchy Show has fallen out of favour – and with it, the only reason they had to engage in sibling bonding. Bart is now alone in his bedroom watching Screaming Friends, in which animated chainsaws dance round the room trying to saw their friends in half ('Obviously the jokes are great but what I love is the storytelling') while empowered feminist Lisa is chuckling knowingly at a show from the 'golden age of television – 2015' called Quirk Girl. As The Simpsons is fond of telling us, 'it's funny because it's true'. But notice the subliminal messaging: 'Whatever your objections to TV, it's maybe the one thing left capable of bringing us all together. And you know you couldn't live without it because, just imagine how horrible it would be not to be able to congratulate yourself, spotting all those clever 'meta' references we squeeze into every episode.' I'm not saying The Simpsons isn't genius. But I do think it might possibly be evil genius. Oh, and Marge isn't really dead by the way. It was just another fantasy sequence, presumably bigged up by publicists with a view to keeping interest in the show alive. After two episodes of Smoke I'm as yet undecided as to whether I'm going to last another seven. A lot of money and effort has clearly gone into the production – sinuous title song from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, artsy camera angles, decent cast – but there's something about the tone that troubles me. It borrows the structure of your typical serial-killer drama, with two dogged sleuths played by Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett. Only, the baddies they must try to capture before they strike again aren't super-ingenious murderers with a thematic killing pattern but arsonists. Sure arsonists are bad, setting fire to places and potentially claiming lives, but as villains they don't quite set the pulse racing. One of them – an overworked, socially awkward black guy who toils in a fast food chain – seems more pitiable than hateful, which makes it harder to root for his capture. To compensate, the drama – adapted by Dennis Lehane from a podcast called Firebug – seems to be working overhard to beg us, 'No wait! This is different! Just stick around and see where we're going with this!' I was tempted to give up after a fairly uninviting first episode in which nice, dependable Dave (Egerton) is trying to get his book published about being a fire investigator, and he's teamed up with traumatised, but capable US marine-turned-police officer Michelle (Smollett). But then came the shock twist at the end of episode two, which cast a whole new light on everything. Still not sure I care enough about any of them to last to the end, though. Also, do the flesh-melting-off-seared-limbs sequences really have to be so Itchy-&-Scratchy graphic?

Travis Kelce opens up about how reading challenges affected his 'SNL' debut

While Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been known to make touchdowns on the field, he's been trying his luck at scoring off the field in the world of acting. Appearing on a July 1 episode of 'Bussin' With The Boys,' a podcast hosted by former NFL players Will Compton and Taylor Lewan, Kelce opened up about breaking into the acting world and some of its challenges. Reminiscing on his 'Saturday Night Live' hosting gig in March 2023, Kelce said that while he felt 'so much more comfortable' doing comedy, he still felt nervous and was concerned that he wouldn't be taken seriously. Kelce remembered thinking, ''I want to take advantage of this, like, I want to have fun doing it but I don't want to look like a loser doing this. I want to make them respect my approach and how I'm taking it serious.' Calling the rehearsals leading up to the show 'a crazy ride' and 'just a fun rollercoaster,' he explained that he was at Rockefeller Center preparing all week until 2 or 3 a.m. every day. When asked about the 'SNL' writers' rooms, Kelce called them 'fun because you're just getting pitched ideas.' But when it came time for the table read, the football star called the experience the 'hardest f---ing part' about being on the show. 'The table reading — for a guy that can't really read that well — it was kind of a f--- situation,' he said. 'I felt like I was just trying to get through the reading instead of actually acting it out and giving it a voice and giving it a character, things like that.' 'I was just focused on, 'Don't f------ skip this line,'' he added. Lewan admitted similar troubles, telling Kelce, 'Brother, when it comes to reading difficulties, I will be on that side of the aisle with you my entire life.' When Kelce added that he considers himself 'more of an audio guy,' Lewan joked, 'That's why they make audio books now, for guys like us.' ''You reading?' I'm listening. I'm listening quite a bit, actually,' Lewan said as Kelce laughed. Earlier in the interview, Kelce touched on his 'fun cameo' in Adam Sandler's upcoming sequel, 'Happy Gilmore 2,' which is set to hit theaters July 25. 'That's where I see myself kind of focusing, like those fun cameos,' he said, later adding, 'like in 'Happy Gilmore,' I'm a waiter. Like a fun a-- f------ role in a movie with a guy, Adam Sandler, who I've loved my entire life.' 'I'd kill to do movies like that for the rest of my life,' Kelce said of the new film. Despite his recent list of acting credits, including 'Happy Gilmore 2,' Kelce admitted that acting is a field he's not 'comfortable in yet, especially enough to do serious stuff,' telling the podcast hosts that he doesn't 'feel like I've grasped the acting world yet.' In 2024, Kelce took on his first 'serious' acting role as Eddie Lachlan in Ryan Murphy's show 'Grotesquerie.' While he credited the 'really good cast' for showing him the ropes, he said he felt out of his comfort zone 'preparation wise.' 'I'm so prepared for an NFL game,' Kelce explained. 'In my career field, I get an entire week to figure out a scheme, how I'm going to attack somebody, how I'm going to handle certain specific situations. And when you go into acting, it's just, I didn't feel as prepared.' The Super Bowl champion says he wishes acting had a similar approach to his on-field plays, saying, 'Every single director I've met on scenes, I'm just like, 'Coach me up. I'm here to be coached. If I suck, tell me I suck. Tell me how I can be better. I'll take all the criticism, I don't give a f---.''
