Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi said that Trinidad and Tobago is a country that has always stood with India. "President Christine Kangaloo's ancestors were from the land of Saint Thiruvalluvar, Tamil Nadu. Thousands of years ago, Saint Thiruvalluvar stated that strong nations should possess six key qualities: a strong army, patriotic people, abundant resources, effective leadership, robust defence, and friendly nations that always stand together. Trinidad and Tobago is such a friendly country for India," said PM Modi.
Speaking about the award, PM Modi said, "The fact that this honour is being given to a foreign leader for the first time reflects the depth of our special relationship. This honour is rooted in our shared history and cultural heritage. Over 180 years ago, those who came here from India laid the foundation of our friendship. Though their hands were empty, their hearts were enriched with Indian civilization, culture, and diversity. The seeds of harmony and goodwill they sowed are now bearing fruit in the form of Trinidad and Tobago's progress and prosperity."
PM Modi said that the award reflects the eternal and deep friendship between the two countries. "There is the thrill of cricket and the spice of pepper in our relations...Deep harmony between two cultures is a great strength of our relations. As a close and trusted partner, we have been emphasising skill development and capacity building of the people of Trinidad and Tobago... Our cooperation is important for the entire Global South. As two vibrant democracies, we will continue to work together for the welfare of the people," said the Prime Minister.
PM Modi also held bilateral meeting with Trinidad and Tobago's President, Christine Kangaloo, in Port of Spain. The two countries are likely to sign several agreement to boost the bilateral trade and cooperation.

Speaking to the media in the Parliament House complex, Gandhi raised concerns about the government's foreign policy, national security, and the handling of Operation Sindoor. 'What statement will Prime Minister Modi give… that Trump brokered the ceasefire? He can't say that. But the truth is — Trump did broker the ceasefire, and the whole world knows it,' Gandhi said. He pointed out that Donald Trump has claimed on at least 25 occasions that he was instrumental in brokering the ceasefire deal. 'Who is Trump to broker a ceasefire? That's not his job. Yet Prime Minister Modi hasn't responded even once. This is the truth, and you can't run away from it,' he said while slamming the Modi government for refusing to rebut Trump's statements. Accusing the Modi government of evading critical national issues, the Rae Bareli MP said, 'There are many pressing issues that we want to discuss — from national defence and the defence industry to Operation Sindoor. Those who call themselves patriots have disappeared. The Prime Minister has not made a single public statement'. 'On one hand, the government says Operation Sindoor is ongoing. On the other, it is celebrating victory. And meanwhile, Trump keeps saying he got the ceasefire done. Clearly, something is fishy,' he said. India and the UK have been negotiating a deal for years. Modi will meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and hold wide-ranging discussions with him. He will head to the Maldives next on July 25. Let's take a closer look: What we know Negotiations for the deal began in January 2022 under the previous Conservative government. Then prime minister Boris Johnson had ordered negotiators 'to get it done by Diwali in October'. However, the talks over the deal have stretched on for years before concluding in May 2025. Modi in May hailed it as a 'historical deal'. This is India's first such agreement with another nation in over a decade. This is the UK's fourth trade agreement since Brexit. Bilateral trade between the two countries was at $55 billion in 2023/24. The deal includes a double contribution convention – also known as a social security pact – which will help Indian workers. This exempt Indian professionals and companies from social security contributions in the UK for three years — a move described by the Indian government as a 'huge win'. The idea behind it is to stop employers and employees from the burden of contributing to social security in multiple countries. The FTA is extremely detailed – comprising 26 chapters on goods, services, investment, and intellectual property rights. India and the UK are negotiating a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) on a parallel track. India has FTAs with Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Australia, UAE, Mauritius, the 10-nation bloc ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and four European nations' bloc EFTA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). India is also currently negotiating FTAs with the US, Oman, the European Union (EU), Peru, and Israel. How India benefits The deal will allow 99 per cent of Indian exports to the UK to fall under zero-duty category. This will boost labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, leather, apparel and footwear, toys, marine product, gems and jewellery. Many of these currently face tariffs ranging from 4 per cent to 16 per cent. Engineering goods, auto components, electric and hybrid vehicles, and sports goods will also benefit. The double contribution pact will be of great help to Indian workers in the UK. It will exempt them from paying into social security for a period of three years. 'The UK is an important market for Indian exporters,' Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisation, said. It is expected to benefit firms such as Welspun India, Arvind Ltd, Bata India, Relaxo, Tata Motors, Mahindra Electric, and Bharat Forge. It will also increase the flow of investment to India. The UK is currently India's sixth-largest foreign investor. It has already invested $36 billion in India. British firms could partner with Indian companies under the FTA and receive benefits. 'This is a significant agreement,' Vikram Misri, India's foreign secretary, told reporters on Tuesday. Trade minister Piyush Goyal will accompany Modi for the formal signing, a commerce ministry official said. How UK benefits The UK has called this its 'biggest and most economically significant' deal since it signed a similar agreement with the EU. The government has called it a 'huge economic win for the UK' and a 'landmark trade deal'. India will eliminate tariffs on 90 per cent of UK goods. Cars being sent to India, which currently face 100 per cent tariffs, will be cut to just 10 per cent. Cosmetics, salmon, chocolates, medical devices, and biscuits will also see tariffs lowered under a quota. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer The government has called it a 'huge economic win for the UK' and a 'landmark trade deal'. AP British consumers will get the benefits of these products becoming cheaper. Tariffs will also be cut on machinery and aerospace equipment. Firms such as Diageo and carmakers like Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover will get a boost. There are around 1,000 Indian companies operating in the UK who employ around 100,000 people. Indian businesses could further invest in healthcare, transport, and energy sectors under the FTA. Additionally, British firms investing in India could receive preferential treatment under the 'Make in India' policy. The Scotch Whisky Association has called the deal 'transformational' The deal is expected to boost the UK economy by $6.5 billion by 2040. Apart from this, another 1.29 million tonnes of rare earths are present in hard rock areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan. This information was shared in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh. He mentioned that the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), which works under the Department of Atomic Energy, is actively searching for more rare earth minerals across the country. Their work includes exploring coastal areas, river sands, and hard rock regions where these minerals are likely to be found. Discovery of 482.6 million tonnes of rare earth ore Jitendra Singh also revealed that the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has found about 482.6 million tonnes of rare earth ore through 34 different exploration projects across various parts of the country. He also mentioned that in the last 10 years, India has exported just 18 tonnes of rare earth minerals and hasn't imported any during this time. To address the challenges caused by export bans on rare earth magnets by certain countries, Singh said that the Ministry of External Affairs is actively working with other nations and international partners. India is continuing discussions at both bilateral (one-on-one) and multilateral (involving multiple countries) levels to boost cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including rare earth minerals and related technologies. These efforts are aimed at keeping supply chains stable and protecting the interests of Indian businesses that rely on these materials. The Ministry of Mines is taking major steps to ensure that India has a stable and secure supply of key minerals, especially Rare Earth Elements. These minerals play a crucial role in producing electric vehicles, clean energy technologies like solar panels and wind turbines, and essential defence systems. To meet this need, the Indian government is forming strong ties with countries that have rich reserves of these minerals. Minerals such as lithium, cobalt, graphite, titanium, and rare earths are in high demand because they are vital to many fast-growing industries. To support these sectors and keep the supply chain strong, the Ministry has also brought in several important policy changes and reforms.
