‘Superman' Dominates Box Office With $122 Million Opening

Forbes2 days ago
'Superman' opened with an impressive $122 million at the domestic box office, Warner Bros. told multiple outlets Sunday, after landing the year's second-largest opening day Friday, with the film on track to gross over $217 million internationally.

The early numbers indicate 'Superman' is on track through box office sales to earn back its $225 million budget, a figure The Wall Street Journal confirmed last week.
The film's opening day Friday was the second-largest of the year—grossing $56.5 million, placing it ahead of Disney's 'Lilo and Stitch' but just behind 'A Minecraft Movie,' also released by Warner Bros., which opened in April to $57.1 million.
'Superman' was directed by DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, and its early success marks a victory for Gunn and fellow co-chair Peter Safran's reported ambitious plans to revitalize the brand and release more films and television shows in the DC Extended Universe.
The two massive openings are good news for Warner Bros., whose stock fell to a historic low in 2024 after a year of poor box office sales—the company is currently pursuing a plan to split with Discovery only three years after a blockbuster merger in 2022.
The other big hits over the weekend were films that similarly scored big other big openings over the past few weeks—'Jurassic World Rebirth' sold an estimated $40 million this weekend and 'F1' held on in third place with an estimated $13 million, Deadline reported. Key Background
Before its release, 'Superman' began to face backlash from right-wing critics and influencers, who decried the film as 'superwoke' after Gunn called Superman an 'immigrant' in an interview with the Sunday Times on July 4. However, fans and critics have mostly responded positively to the latest installation of the character. 'Superman' earned 82% positive reviews from critics and 93% positive reviews from fans as of Sunday afternoon, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
'Superman' is shaping up to be the first hit for the comics brand in years. The last major hit for a DC character was 'The Batman' in 2022, which grossed around$134 million on its opening weekend. In the years since, DC has produced a series of flops: 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' opened with only $30 million and 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' opened with only $27 million, both in 2023. 'The Flash' fared only a bit better the same year, grossing $55 million over its opening weekend. 'Superman' also surpassed the opening weekend of 'Man of Steel,' the last franchise reboot, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill. Snyder's take on the iconic DC Comics character grossed around $117 million at the domestic box office when it was released in June 2013. Crucial Quote
In an interview with The New York Times, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav praised the film's performance and previewed Gunn and Safran's vision for the future of the previously 'underdeveloped' DC brand. 'Now we have Gunn and Safran firing with a 10-year plan,' Zaslav told the Times. ''Supergirl' has already been shot. They're working on Wonder Woman. They're working on Batman.'

Beloved 'Happy Days' Star Finally Earns His First Acting Emmy Nomination at the Age of 71

Beloved 'Happy Days' Star Finally Earns His First Acting Emmy Nomination at the Age of 71 originally appeared on Parade. Ron Howard is having one very happy day! On July 15, the former child star-turned-director, 71, received his very first acting Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in The Studio. In the Apple TV+ comedy series, Howard plays a fictionalized version of himself, and hilarity ensues as studio head Matt Remick (Seth Rogen) and his colleagues argue over who should be the one to tell the legendary filmmaker that he needs to cut a scene from his next movie. Howard's performance wasn't just a hit with the Television Academy, but also with his costars. "[He] was so game and so good and really tried so hard," Rogen, 43, gushed of working with the Happy Days alum in an interview with People. "[He] worked really hard on the performance and the role and yeah, he was very impressive." Howard's daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, who jokingly acted as her father's "momager" on The Studio set, was quite amazed too. "I was so nervous for him because he hasn't acted — he's done some stuff, like in Arrested Development, he's done some cameos here and there — but [this was] like a real part with dialogue, and they're shooting it all with oners, so you cannot mess up," she said at a live taping of Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast in New York City on April 14. However, "he went and he did the rehearsal, and honestly, I was like, oh my God. He was so good," the actress, 44, admitted. "He was so on point, and everyone was just sort of baffled by it, frankly." 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Will it be enough to earn Howard the Emmy, though? Come September, he'll be going up against last year's winner, The Bear's Jon Bernthal, as well as several other The Studio guest stars, including Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Anthony Mackie and Martin Scorsese. A Rose Ceremony Bombshell! Who Went Home on 'Bachelor in Paradise' 2025 Tonight?

A Rose Ceremony Bombshell! Who Went Home on 'Bachelor in Paradise' 2025 Tonight? originally appeared on Parade. On episode 2 of Bachelor in Paradise season 10, four new women joined the show — Alli Jo Hinkes, Parisa Shifteh, Jill Chin and Susie Evans. The show also introduced a Kissing Booth game that was quite informative, though it happened before Jill and Susie got to the resort. As the newbies, the new women were all given date cards. Parisa asked Brian Autz on her date, Alli Jo asked Jonathon Johnson on her date, Jill also asked Jonathon (though it was kind of a friends thing), and Susie asked Jeremy Simon on her date. Below are all the details from episode 2, including who coupled up and which women were sent packing from Bachelor in Paradise season 10 in 2025. Beware of spoilers men had the roses this week, and since four new women were introduced, four women had to go home. Here's who got the boot: The remaining eliminated woman appears to be Lexi Young, but that remains to be seen. What happened was that her match from the premiere episode, Justin Glaze, did not offer Lexi a rose. Instead, he offered a rose to his ex-girlfriend Susie. As Susie said, it seemed like he was doing it to give Susie a chance to stay and possibly meet someone when new male contestants are added to the show. But Susie didn't want to stay that way, and she turned his rose down. Justin then left the set, Susie chased after him, cameramen gave chase to them, and then Lexi walked off set in a different direction, and the show left us with a "to be continued"...For the Kissing Booth game, each contestant — the six couples left from the premiere, plus the two new women, Alli Jo and Parisa — was given an iPad and was able to vote on which members of the opposite sex they wanted to kiss in the Kissing Booth. Only couples that matched ended up in the Kissing Booth. Many of the men "swiped right" on every girl just to see who would match with them. Spencer and Justin were the only two who stayed completely loyal to the woman who gave them a rose in week 1. Moms Share the Most 'Unhinged' Things They Did After Having a Baby

When Lauren Nolan gave birth to her first child, Charlie, six months ago, she remembers feeling a bit "unhinged." "Postpartum hormones really threw me for a loop," she tells "That combined with an emergency C-section recovery and first time baby ... it's all very overwhelming." So the Chicago-based content creator decided to start a conversation with her followers based on a popular trend. "Moms — tell me the most unhinged thing you did freshly postpartum," she wrote on an Instagram reel on April 19. "Not like 'I cried a lot,' or, 'I only wore pjs.' I'm talking 'unhinged.'" And oh baby, did her audience deliver. She still receives comments on the reel every day. Here are a selection of our favorite responses: "I walked to the coffee shop down the street and realized I was wearing only the baby in the carrier on top. No shirt. No bra. Just the baby." "I was holding my daughter and dropped the remote control on her head while nursing her by accident. I then cried and laid on the couch and dropped the remote control on my own head a few times to see how bad it hurt. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫" "I dreamt that I had twins. I woke up in a panic because I couldn't find the other baby. Legit was looking for it for a good 15 minutes before I realized I only had the one baby." "Dialed 911 in a panic because I saw on the monitor that someone was standing over my baby's crib in the middle of the night. It was me. I was the one standing over the crib. 😭🫠" "Took the dog to the vet to get his nails clipped. Was wearing an eye patch for postpartum Bell's palsy. Forgot the dog at home." 'I woke up in the middle of the night with my 1-week-old at the time and had forgotten what I named him and started crying. I had to wake my husband up to ask him.' "Woke up one night nursing, burping and then rocking baby to sleep. Was about to put him back in the bassinet only to realize baby is asleep in the bassinet and I was nursing and burping my phone." "Shaved my head. One of my kids came home from elementary with lice 10 days after birth. I just shaved everyone's head cause I couldn't handle hours of combing four children." "I cried all day long because my 3-day-old baby didn't have any friends 😂" Though the vast majority of the comments are lighthearted, some touched on more troubling emotions that can follow childbirth. So, how do you know if your unhinged postpartum moments are normal or something more worrisome? Dr. Catherine Birndorf, a reproductive psychiatrist and co-founder of The Motherhood Center, tells when to reach out to a trusted medical professional. "A rapid drop in hormones after childbirth can cause you to do things you normally wouldn't do, which can be unnerving. In fact, 80% of people who give birth experience 'baby blues' in the first two weeks," Birndorf shares. "But I'm surprised more people don't lose it." Baby blues are "a non-pathological state, not an illness like postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety," she explains. Most of the comments Birndorf saw on the Instagram reel fit into the baby blues category, but if moms continue feeling "overwhelmed, mad, guilty or helpless" for more than two weeks, she says it is time to seek help. Nolan, who experienced what she describes as the "normal" amount of unhinged behavior, says that she found a lot of validation in reading the comments and hopes other new moms do too. 'You just grew a human and birthed a human, and then are taking care of a human, and as much as your partner wants to understand and support you, there's no way of explaining that to someone else who hasn't been through it,' she says. "Of course we're all crying. Of course we're all struggling. We're sleep deprived. We're recovering," she adds. Reading other women's stories "made me feel a lot less alone. It reminded me that every new mom feels that way." This article was originally published on
