Gun safety group says UofL student lied about surviving high school shooting
Everytown for Gun Safety says a man who spoke at a February rally for gun safety it helped organize in Frankfort lied about his experience surviving a school shooting.
The event, which the Lantern and other media outlets covered, happened Feb. 12 in the Kentucky State Capitol. Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action hosted a variety of speakers who advocated against gun violence.
One of the speakers, Calvin Polachek, said that when he was a high school student in Pennsylvania, he lost people in a school shooting, including claiming that he saw his best friend lying in a pool of blood.
Polachek 'is not an active volunteer with Moms Demand Action or Students Demand Action, and we are deeply disappointed that someone would exploit the tragic, lived experience of many to use our platform to share a story that was not true,' Sarah Boland Heine, the senior director of communications for Everytown, said in a Wednesday statement. The Lantern reached out to Moms Demand Action, which is part of the Everytown gun safety group network, after receiving numerous messages from people who said they were classmates or relatives of Polachek and that the shooting never happened
'Calvin reached out to our Kentucky chapter, shamefully lied to our volunteers and shared a tragic story that we later learned was not true,' Heine said. 'This is an affront to the countless survivors of gun violence who show extraordinary courage every day by reliving their darkest moments in service of the fight to end our country's gun violence crisis. We are revisiting our guidance to our grassroots networks in an effort to ensure this never happens again.'
Polachek did not immediately respond to Facebook and LinkedIn messages from the Lantern. Polachek was identified as a University of Louisville student at the rally. A UofL spokesperson said Wednesday that he is currently a graduate student.
The Dallas School District, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, said in a Wednesday statement that it 'is aware of a video clip and accompanying article that appears to depict a former Dallas student speaking about a school shooting at Dallas in 2017.'
'Thankfully, that never happened,' the school said. 'The discussion on the clip about Dallas and school violence is not factually accurate.'
The school district did not immediately return a voicemail from the Lantern.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Township Police Department said the claims made that day at the rally are 'entirely false.'
'The widespread sharing of a fabricated tragedy is not only reckless, it is harmful,' the police department said in a news release. 'It fuels unnecessary fear, disrespects the experiences of real victims of school violence and misleads the public with a narrative that has no basis in truth.'

A maniac who stabbed a beloved Brooklyn deli worker appeared 'hell-bent' after an earlier scuffle with the frightened father — despite his own mother's screams for him to stop, witnesses said Saturday. The fight at the NY Deli & Mini Market Corp. at the corner of Hegeman and Van Siclen avenues in East New York broke out just after 3 p.m. Friday, cops said. The worker, Diego Sandoval Nava, was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center where the father of three, including a nerwborn, died, cops said. The unhinged knifeman fled the scene and has not been captured, an NYPD spokesman said. Ivor Dowridge saw some of the attack when he went into the store to use the ATM and said three workers were trying to hold the berserk attacker back. It is unclear what led to the fight. 'He was hell-bent on going after the guy,' Dowridge, 63, said. 'The victim looks scared. I saw his face, I saw it in his eyes.' The maniac put his hands down and walked out of the store, but returned a short time later with a knife, he said. 'When I was leaving the store, I saw him running back in,' Dowridge said. 'I saw him going in his pocket. 'His mom was outside shouting at him as he was going back, 'What the f–k are you doing? What the hell are you doing?' ' Dowridge, a union worker who lives in the area, knows the stabber, who was out of work, has two kids and gets help from his mother, he told The Post. 'He just had to walk away and nothing like this would've happened,' he said. 'You stabbed somebody, your life is over.' A 45-year-old woman who works nearby said Nava always made her breakfast. She said it has huge communal gardens that are great for sitting in with friends or solo. In recent years, however, neighbors have been using the shared space to host parties with over 50 attendees on the weekend. She said the events are often noisy until the early hours, guests use residents' parking bays and the grounds are used as a toilet due to no available facilities nearby. 'Recently, a new-ish tenant declared her intention to hold a big party in the grounds and her Facebook post got a few 'likes' (from her friends), but when it came to the weekend in question she had hired in a massive marquee that could easily hold 100 people and decided to put it up right in the middle of the gardens,' the woman wrote. The woman said the tenants who live in the apartment complex have a Facebook group, where many began to complain about the disruptive party and the size of the marquee. She recalled that other members of the group, who 'don't get impacted by garden parties as they're on the other side of the building,' started hurling insults. Officials scour mountainous area of Montana for ex-US soldier suspected of killing 4 in bar shooting
Authorities were scouring a mountainous area of western Montana on Saturday for a military veteran who they say opened fire at a bar, killing four people. Michael Paul Brown, 45, fled The Owl Bar in the small town of Anaconda in a white pickup truck but ditched it at some point, said Lee Johnson, administrator of the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is overseeing the case. He urged residents late Friday to stay at home and remain on high alert. On Saturday, authorities released a photo of the suspect, barefoot and shirtless, walking down what appeared to be a flight of outdoor concrete steps. The photo showed Brown, wearing black shorts, fleeing after the shooting Friday, according to the Division of Criminal Investigation. 'While law enforcement has not received reports of Brown harming any other individuals, he is believed to be armed, and he is extremely dangerous,' Johnson said. Anaconda-Deer Lodge Police Chief Bill Sather said Saturday that businesses in the area could open, but he urged caution. Authorities said they would release the names of the victims once all of their families have been notified. 'This is a small tight-knit community that has been harmed by the heinous actions of one individual who does not represent what this community or Montanans stand for,' Johnson said. Anaconda, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Butte, is hemmed in by mountains. The town of about 9,000 people was founded by copper barons who profited off nearby mines in the late 1800s. A smelter stack that is no longer operational looms over the valley. Brown lived next door to The Owl Bar, said owner David Gwerder, who wasn't there during the shooting Friday morning. Gwerder told The Associated Press that the bartender and three patrons were killed and didn't think anyone else was inside. He also said he wasn't aware of any conflicts between Brown and any of the victims. 'He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. 'He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.' Brown served in the U.S. Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, said Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said. He left military service in the rank of sergeant. Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told The Associated Press on Friday that her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years and that she and her other family members repeatedly sought help. 'This isn't just a drunk/high man going wild,' she wrote in a Facebook message. 'It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either.' With no sign of Brown in the white pickup or his home, authorities converged on the Stumptown Road area west of Anaconda by ground and air Friday, locking it down so no one was allowed in or out. Authorities had lifted the lockdown by Saturday. A helicopter hovered over a nearby mountainside as officers moved among the trees, said Randy Clark, a retired police officer who lives there. The search continued Saturday morning, said Chase Scheuer, a spokesperson for Montana's Division of Criminal Investigation. As reports of the shooting spread through town earlier Friday, business owners locked their doors and sheltered inside with customers. The owner of the Firefly Café in Anaconda said she locked up her business after a friend alerted her to the shooting.
