Venice expects to rake in over US$1.1 billion from Bezos-Sanchez wedding

CTV News21 hours ago

Venice, Italy, can expect to reap a US$1.1 billion reward from Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's controversial, star-studded wedding, according to Italy's Tourism Ministry.
The ministry said Friday that the event, which has been met with fierce pushback from some Venetians, could provide a boost of almost 68 per cent of the city's annual tourism turnover.
The three-day wedding, reportedly costing up to $55 million, has kept Venice hotels and other businesses busy.
Despite the economic boost, protesters have rallied against the nuptials of Bezos, the founder of Amazon and the third richest person in the world, and Lauren Sanchez, a former TV reporter, with one banner reading 'No space for Bezos,' and a tarp from Greenpeace that read: 'If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax.'
'We need to abandon the controversy and focus on opportunities,' said Daniela Santanchè, the minister of tourism in Italy, in a news release. 'This is not just a private event, but a concrete driving force for the entire sector. Venice has all it takes to transform it into an opportunity for relaunch and promotion.'
The 200 wedding guests include A-listers Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Brady and Kim and Khloe Kardashian.
The more than $1 billion economic boost is about a quarter of what pop singers Taylor Swift and Beyoncé managed in the United States over their months-long tours.
In 2023, Michael Grahn, then-chief economist of Danske Bank, cited Beyonce's 'Renaissance' tour as a contributor to inflated hotel and restaurant prices in Stockholm. The tour added more than $4.5 billion to the US economy, according to a 2023 analysis of concertgoers' spending by research firm QuestionPro.
Taylor Swift's 'Eras' tour, which ran for nearly two years and hosted 152 concerts in 51 cities, wrapped up last December as the highest-grossing tour of all time. The tour's economic impact totaled roughly $5 billion in the United States, according to an estimate by QuestionPro. But that total only took into account direct spending, according to the US Travel Association, which estimates Swift's total impact likely exceeded $10 billion when factoring in indirect spending and when non-ticket holders make purchases outside of venues.
The $1.1 billion coming from the Bezos-Sanchez wedding is more than the $1 billion Las Vegas generated from the 2024 Super Bowl.
Italy has hosted other high-profile weddings, including in 2014 with Kim Kardashian-Kanye West in Florence and Amal Alamuddin-George Clooney in Venice.

Beloved monster-sized Alberta dinosaur set for tests ahead of possible extinction

Tyra the Tyrannosaurus, the lovable landmark that towers over the Drumheller skyline in the heart of the Canadian Badlands, is facing an extinction-level event and is pictured in Drumheller, Alta., Tuesday, April 1, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntosh Tyra the Tyrannosaurus is set to be poked and prodded this fall to determine whether Drumheller's towering, monstrously popular icon can be saved from extinction. Mayor Heather Colberg says a technical check will determine how much work — and money — may be needed to keep the 25-metre figure in its current place dominating the skyline of the town northeast of Calgary. 'We've agreed on the engineering study, so that's going to take place probably this fall,' said Colberg, who also is leaving office this fall. 'Once that is done then, we'll have a good idea what her longevity is and everything about her, and then hopefully, we can make a decision before I'm gone.' 'If, all of a sudden, they come and say she's actually going to fall apart, then that's a whole different discussion. But if they say she's good for 30 years and she might need an outer coating, then that's different, too.' Tyra is four times the size of a real T. Rex and attracts 150,000 visitors a year, serving as the backdrop to hundreds of thousands of tourists' photos over the last quarter of a century. She stands across from the intersection of Gorgosaurus Street and Tyrannosaurus Drive near a visitor information centre. A nearby ice cream stand offers fossils, T-shirts and dino toys. Tourists can climb 106 stairs through Tyra's innards to stand inside her mouth and look down. While the town owns the land where she's located, the Drumheller & District Chamber of Commerce owns the attraction. The chamber has said the dinosaur is set to be dismantled when the lease runs out in 2029. That announcement has resulted in a public backlash, including 25,000 names on a petition calling for her to be spared. The Town of Drumheller also demanded meetings with the chamber and Travel Drumheller. The town announced in April the three groups would explore options, and the engineering study flowed from that. Colberg said she's optimistic the landmark won't go the way of the dinosaurs. 'I would be amazed if she's not (saved),' Colberg said. 'There's got to be a solution. I'm not giving up.' The town of 8,400 bills itself as the Dinosaur Capital of the World. Home to the famed Royal Tyrrell Museum, the community also has statues of dinosaurs that look like they crawled out of the Flintstones cartoon, greeting people on the streets. Colberg said she was initially surprised — but then not surprised — at the amount of national attention that Tyra's possible demise has garnered across Canada. 'People like the dinosaurs and love coming here for the dinosaurs,' she said. 'When you promote that you're the dinosaur capital of the world with the world's largest dinosaur, that's what people expect to see.' — By Bill Graveland in Calgary This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 28, 2025.

Could Buying AST SpaceMobile Stock Today Set You Up for Life?

AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) is an exciting stock. It has such an interesting story backing it that some investors might wonder if buying in now could help to set them up for life. That is possible, but there's one small problem that you need to consider before stepping in here. This is what you need to know about AST SpaceMobile before you buy it. What does AST SpaceMobile do? AST SpaceMobile operates a satellite-based broadband cellular network. It is really just starting to build out that network, but it has some of the most important markets covered. That list includes the United States, Europe, and Japan. When it actually turns the network on, it should be ready to hit the ground running. One of the key features of AST SpaceMobile's business model is that it is working in partnership with some of the world's largest telecom companies. That list includes both AT&T and Verizon Communications. These providers have massive customer bases, to which they will market AST SpaceMobile's service as an add-on. The benefit is that satellite access, using a customer's existing cellphone, ensures phone service in virtually all locations. The longer-term goal for AST SpaceMobile is to provide worldwide coverage. Essentially, with no additional outlay for technology, a cellphone customer will eventually be able to ensure they have access to the internet and communications networks the world over. All it will require to take advantage of that "insurance" is a monthly fee, though there are also likely to be other options for those who only need such coverage for a short duration of time. This is a compelling story and hints that there could be a huge amount of growth ahead. That will first come from simply rolling out the service in currently covered regions. But then it will expand as AST SpaceMobile's satellite network grows over time. The problem with AST SpaceMobile So that's the glass-half-full view of things, and it is a compelling story for investors to consider. But there are always caveats to think about, and there are two big ones with AST SpaceMobile. First, launching satellites into space is not a cheap or easy thing to do. Execution will be very important. However, AST SpaceMobile only directly controls just so much of its business on this front. Even if it can build new satellites at a rapid clip, it has to get them launched into space by a third party. It's possible for spaceships to blow up, destroying their contents. A big disaster on that front would be a costly setback for AST SpaceMobile, even though it had little control over the outcome of the launch event. And that assumes that AST SpaceMobile executes very well on what it can control, which isn't a given. Second, and perhaps more worrying, is the fact that Wall Street is clearly aware of the opportunity AST SpaceMobile presents. The stock is up more than 400% over the past year, and by nearly 600% over the past three years. Even as the stock has risen in meteoric fashion, the company still has yet to turn a profit. ASTS data by YCharts. It looks like Wall Street may already be pricing in a lot of good news here. In fact, the recent stock price advance has been so swift that it hints that investors may have gotten a little overenthusiastic about the company's prospects. Sure, the long-term opportunity could be huge, but how much of that appeal has already been baked into the share price? A price-to-earnings ratio of roughly 20 would require earnings of around $2 per share, which seems like an unlikely outcome over the near term given the large need for capital investments (to build and launch additional satellites). AST SpaceMobile is expensive So there's no question that AST SpaceMobile, assuming it executes well, has a very attractive story behind it. That's not the problem with the stock. The problem is that Wall Street often gets a story in its teeth and runs too far and too fast with it. That seems like it might be happening with AST SpaceMobile right now. If you buy it, remember that it is still just a start-up company. You may have to stick around for a long time to benefit given the swift price advance already experienced by the shares. Worse, you may have to sit through a deep drawdown if there are any setbacks, or if the business doesn't develop quickly enough for Wall Street. In other words, AST SpaceMobile is probably only appropriate for more aggressive investors with a very long-term investment horizon. Should you invest $1,000 in AST SpaceMobile right now?
