Report calls for eight-week break & mid-season rest for footballers
That is two weeks less than the minimum off-season rest and retraining period a group of 70 medical and performance experts have recommended in a new study.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel said earlier this week that the demands placed on City and Chelsea by the Club World Cup will hand a 'huge advantage' to Liverpool and Arsenal in next season's Premier League title race.
The European division of world players' union FIFPRO and Europe's leagues have taken legal action against FIFA over what they see as a lack of consultation by the game's global governing body over the fixture calendar.
The scheduling of the Club World Cup within that calendar has been described as a 'tipping point' in the debate by Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.
The expert group has put forward 12 'position statements' on player welfare as part of the Delphi Study, which they feel should be adopted worldwide as minimum welfare standards.
These included a mandatory four-week off-season break, and within that a two-week blackout period where clubs and national teams should have no contact at all with players.
There should then be a minimum four-week retraining period after the off-season break before resuming competitive football. Mid-season breaks should last a minimum of one week, experts said.
Premier League players will not benefit from any mid-season break next season, as was the case in 2024-25. A pause was introduced in the 2019-20 season but was dropped before the start of the season just ended, due to the expansion of international competitions like UEFA's Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
The 12 position statements were agreed with the consensus of at least 75 per cent of the experts involved. Among the other statements were calls for mandatory consideration of the travel burden on players and the impact of long-haul flights, as well as specific workload safeguards for under-18 players.
Dr Vincent Gouttebarge, the medical director of FIFPRO, said: 'This study presents safety standards based on the considered and independent opinions of medical and performance experts working in professional football who understand the mental and physical strain placed on players.
'If we can all agree that health comes first, then we should take steps to implement these safeguards.'

"Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team," Arteta said after the deal was confirmed on Sunday. "He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us. "The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club." And Zubimendi is confident Arsenal will be a "good fit", adding: "Once I made the decision to leave, I set my sights on Arsenal because I think their style of play is a good fit for me. Ian Rush explains heartbreaking reason he didn't attend Diogo Jota funeral
Liverpool legend Ian Rush has revealed the heartbreaking reason why he wasn't able to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota last week. The Liverpool forward and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car crash in northwest Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning. The two were laid to rest in their hometown of Gondomar on Saturday in a private funeral mass. Jota's wife Rute Cardoso, whom he wed just two weeks ago, and their three children were joined by a delegation from Liverpool, with Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson carrying wreaths into the church for their teammate. Portugal teammates, including Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, were also in attendance to pay tribute to the forward, whose last-ever match saw him help his country win the Nations League over Spain. Rush, Liverpool's all-time leading goalscorer, was unable to attend over the weekend, but the Welshman revealed that a death in his own family had prevented him from attending. Now one of our family has gone, so we all have to join together and help one another. The last few days have shown that. 'I was invited and intended to attend Diogo's funeral, but my brother Gerald had passed away last week, I was in the middle of helping with Gerald's funeral when the news broke about Diogo. It's been an incredibly difficult time, and I just wasn't able to make it. 'He hadn't been well for a while, but like with Diogo, it hasn't really sunk in yet. 'Diogo's wife, Rute, their three wonderful children, his parents, and extended family are enduring an unimaginable loss. This heartbreaking accident claimed both Diogo and his brother, André Silva. We grieve deeply for them both.' Paying further tribute to Jota, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Merseyside club, Rush added: 'Diogo was a great player, probably the best natural finisher at the club. 'He was a real down to earth person, a real gent. He just got on with things. West Ham livid with FA as Lucas Paqueta spot-fixing case drags into new season
West Ham star Lucas Paqueta is still waiting to find out the result of an FA hearing into allegations of illegal betting, which concluded last month but is dragging on West Ham are growing increasingly incensed by the slow progress in the Lucas Paqueta case and are worried about the impact on their player. Paqueta has been investigated by the FA for alleged breaches of betting rules, but despite the hearing starting in March and finishing in June, he is still awaiting its outcome. The FA launched its probe back in August 2023 into allegations that the West Ham playmaker was involved in spot-fixing offences in four Premier League matches between November 2022 and August 2023. Although Paqueta did not place any bets himself, it is alleged that friends and family in Brazil profited after betting on yellow cards for the midfielder. He has denied the allegations and any wrongdoing. Paqueta has been impacted by the allegations hanging over his head, which could trigger a lifetime ban if proven. He was in tears after picking up a booking in West Ham's match against Tottenham in May, with the emotional weight of the case refusing to go away. West Ham have done everything in their power to protect Paqueta and support him and The Sun says they are furious that the case has dragged on. The squad will reconvene for pre-season training on Tuesday, meaning that another campaign could be impacted by the allegations. Having started the investigation in August 2023 and officially charged Paqueta in May 2024, the club are bewildered at how long the process is taking. The case scuppered a potential £85million transfer from the Hammers to Manchester City a few years ago and his form has suffered since. They are willing to sell again this summer, but know the case is likely to scare off any interested parties. Manager Graham Potter says the situation has taken its toll on the 27-year-old and his family. 'I think he's just a player that's trying his absolute best and wants the situation to be better and probably got a bit frustrated with the action,' Potter said after having to substitute him in the Spurs game. 'And then you see a human being, not perfect but I love Lucas, he's given everything and in difficult circumstances he's in as well.' His wife Duda took to Instagram in the aftermath of that game, describing their situation as 'a living nightmare'. She wrote: 'My husband has a posture and strength that I admire and that IMPRESSES me. We've been living this nightmare for two years, and he's ALWAYS strong... he's always had it in his head that he would only defend himself at the right time and place! 'There's NOTHING against him. Have you never noticed that? Anyway, God knows everything, and only HE knows why we're going through this! And only because of HIM are we well and living happily as a family! 'I just wish people would respect him.. People are mean and unfair, without knowing ANYTHING!'
