Michael Sheen Writes Off Over $1M Worth of Debt for 900 People Using His Own Money
The Welsh star, famed for roles in Good Omens, Twilight and more recently, A Very Royal Scandal, has started a debt acquisition company to help the group in his native south Wales. The business venture is documented in an upcoming Channel 4 documentary Michael Sheen's Secret Million Pound Giveaway, set to air in the U.K. next week.

Sheen's show aims to reveal how banks and finance companies are profiting from the country's most vulnerable.
'The shocking thing is that people have started having to use credit cards, overdrafts to pay for basics, to pay for necessities, rather than luxuries or anything like that, so the debt that I was able to buy included credit card debt, overdrafts, car finance, that kind of stuff,' he said. 'You need some help to get through these times. And people are getting into spirals of debt. Once you're underwater it's very hard to get out again. That's why I wanted to do this — to draw attention to the fact that this is going on, and there is a way to change it, there are alternatives, and we need to push to try and make a difference for people.'
The actor was initially cautious about spending the money, he told BBC's The One Show on Wednesday, saying he does not have £100,000 to 'throw around' and therefore wanting the project to be 'effective.' It was only when he met a woman in a Port Talbot cafe who told him about 'steelworkers in tears' that Sheen decided to see the debt acquisition company through. Sheen's efforts, directed at the Port Talbot region, come five months after the closure of a blast furnace in Wales, marking the end of traditional steelmaking in the region and prompting in the widespread loss of jobs.
Sheen has become a champion of Wales in recent months, self-financing a new national theater to fill the gap left by the 2024 shutdown of National Theatre Wales, forced to close after a 1.6 million pound ($1.96 million) funding cut.
The actor said the closure of National Theatre Wales was 'incredibly sad, but not a surprise' and that it motivated him to find a solution. '[I realized] if we don't find a way to reimagine the way forward, it may be a long time — if ever — that we have the opportunity to have a national theater in Wales again.'
He added at the time: 'I want it to be something that represents the rich culture that we are and always have been in this country,' he continued, explaining that the company is seeking private and public funding but self-financing initially allows the business to stand 'on its own two feet.'

S Club 7 singer Hannah Spearritt and former TV dancer Louie Spence have withdrawn from Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins in the first episode of the latest series. The Channel 4 military reality show opened with the 14 celebrity recruits hooded and standing on a breakwater, before they were asked for their identities by chief instructor Billy Billingham – who told many of the celebrities 'don't grin at me'. He then led them on two tasks, the first to plunge 26ft into the water and swim to intercept a boat, which picked them up, and the second to rescue three hostages from a building before blowing it up with a grenade. Before the second challenge began, Spearritt, 44, handed over her number tag to directing staff, telling them 'I'm done, I'm sorry, I've reached a point' – and in a pre-recorded interview which was played after her withdrawal, she said 'I don't think I'll go on the first day' adding she 'wouldn't forgive myself'. During the task, Spence, who is best known for Sky TV show Pineapple Dance Studios, threw a grenade into the building while it still had two hostages in it, and afterwards told the directing staff he wished to withdraw, and was given a second chance to put his armband back on, but turned it down. Spence said: 'I want to do an immediate withdrawal, I just don't have the conviction, and I feel as though I'm not dedicated enough.' He was told that he 'hadn't even started', but Spence replied 'that's what I mean'. After the first task, former model Rebecca Loos was pulled in by directing staff after she gave up during the swimming challenge, who asked her to open up on her alleged affair with footballer Sir David Beckham, who she worked for as a personal assistant, during the interrogation. In an interview before the first task, former Drag Race UK star Bimini Bon Boulash said the show would be 'a piece of piss' after growing up as a queer person in Norfolk. After the second task, former Watford striker Troy Deeney, who also threw a grenade into the building before clearing the hostages, was pulled in by the instructors, where he opened up on physical abuse he and his mother received from his late father. The show sees celebrities enter SAS training, where they are not eliminated and are instead culled by the directing staff or able to withdraw themselves, with those who remain at the end declared the winners. The rest of the celebrity recruits are made up of ex-drug mule Michaella McCollum, former footballer Adebayo Akinfenwa, Strictly Come Dancing 2025 runner-up Tasha Ghouri, former The Traitors winner Harry Clark, rapper Lady Leshurr, boxer Conor Benn, singer Lucy Spraggan, and ex-Love Island contestants Chloe Burrows and Adam Collard. Rocker Dave Edmunds, most popular for his 1970 hit 'I Hear You Knocking,' has been left hospitalized and fighting for his life after suffering a 'major' cardiac arrest. The popular Welsh musician's wife, Karin Cecilia 'Cici' Edmunds, shared the shocking news in a lengthy Facebook post on Thursday, July 29. 'My beloved husband of 40 years has had a major cardiac arrest,' she began. Viewer's horrified after doc about adult star who slept with 1,000 men airs on major TV network: ‘Literal porn'
A major TV network has defended its decision to air a documentary about controversial porn star Bonnie Blue after viewers labelled it 'literal porn.' Channel 4, a British free-to-view TV station, premiered '1,000 Men and Me: The Bonnie Blue Story' in the UK on Wednesday evening. Advertisement But the one-hour documentary, which details the troubling tale of the 26-year-old as she has sex with 1,057 men in 12 hours, has been met with widespread criticism for being 'jaw-droppingly graphic' from viewers. Now Channel 4 has hit back at critics, arguing the pornographic content is compliant with local broadcasting codes. As a result, many branded the film 'disturbing,' 'sickening' and 'degrading', arguing it should never have been shown on TV. During the documentary, Blue is reportedly seen preparing for her most notorious stunt by buying '1,600 condoms, 50 balaclavas, numbing lube.' It's not just the stunt itself, along with the film, that has sparked outrage, with Blue's extreme approach to filming adult content regularly attracting widespread criticism. Dr. Charlotte Proudman, a family lawyer, said: 'The language Bonnie uses around being 'tied down, gagged and choked' for public consumption directly mirrors some of the most violent forms of abuse I see survivors disclose in courtrooms.' The former marketing executive told last week their friendship turned sour after Blue went on a media rampage after her 'horrifying' sex event was canned, during which time she seemingly took a swipe at Knight. Taking aim at OnlyFans, Blue claimed the platform 'took unprecedented action' to punish her for 'making content, while multiple other creators are mimicking my entire marketing techniques and events.' 'Sex is meant to be enjoyable for both parties and that's the most important thing for me to educate people on.'
