Migrant worker's son and wife beaten by Delhi police; Mamata Banerjee posts video

Kolkata July 27 (UNI): A migrant worker's wife and young son, who had travelled from West Bengal to Delhi in search of work, were allegedly assaulted by the police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested against the incident by posting a video on social media. Launching an attack against the BJP-led Central Government and the ruling party in Delhi, she wrote, "Even a child is not spared from linguistic terrorism." In the video shared by the Chief Minister, a young man is seen showing injury marks on his young son's body, saying, "Look what they have done to my son. The police beat him and injured his forehead." He is also heard alleging in the video that all their essential belongings were thrown away. The man's wife also appears in the video. Pointing to her, the man says, "She too was beaten badly." However, the video has not been independently verified by UNIthand itr also does not have . Posting the video, the chief minister wrote, 'See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the Bengalis! Where are they taking our country now?' The Trinamool Congress has stepped up its protest following reports of harassment faced by migrant workers from Bengal working in other states. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also warned of a larger movement if harassment of migrant workers is not stopped. The allegation is that Bengali-speaking workers, suspected of being Bangladeshis, are being detained in BJP-ruled states like Odisha, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh—even after showing documents like Aadhaar and voter ID cards. In such cases, only a 'Police Clearance Certificate' (PCC) seems to secure their release; otherwise, they are being detained. The harassment of Bengali migrant workers in Delhi and Odisha has already reached the Calcutta High Court. Against this backdrop, the ruling party in West Bengal, Trinamool, has launched a 'language movement' against the BJP starting Sunday. Tomorow Mamata Banerjee is set to participate in the Nanur Dibas program in Birbhum and will also take part in a march. She is supposed to leave for Birbhum by road on Sunday evening. UNI XC SSP

Maradu police launch probe into faulty construction of Chander Kunj Army Towers

Kochi: Maradu police have registered one more FIR and begun an investigation into the alleged faulty construction of Chander Kunj Army Towers at Silver Sand Island, Vyttila. The FIR was registered under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. The FIR was registered on July 21, based on a court directive after Colonel (retd) Ciby George, a resident of the Army towers, filed a private complaint before Ernakulam judicial first-class magistrate court-VIII. The FIR states that the crime was committed with the intention of making excessive profits by cheating the complainant and others. The three towers of the apartment complex were constructed under the ownership of Army Welfare Housing Organisation, without obtaining necessary sanctions from govt departments and by using low-quality materials. The complainant purchased one of the flats in the building on May 31, 2018, but the flat started developing damages and became uninhabitable. The accused committed the crime by overseeing the construction at various stages and at other times. The FIR was registered after the petition filed before the court was forwarded to the station, the FIR states. Maradu station house officer (SHO) filed a report before the court on July 15 stating that the case was of a serious nature and there was a need for a special unit of police to investigate it. The case diary was submitted to higher-ups so that the probe could be transferred to crime branch. Further procedures were in process regarding the same, the report stated. Maradu police are also investigating three other cases registered in connection with the issue. Earlier, the high court on June 16 declined to order a CBI investigation into the alleged corruption behind the dilapidated condition of towers B and C on a petition filed by George.

IPL 2026: Nitish Kumar Reddy Breaks Silence On His Future With Sunrisers Hyderabad Amid Trade Rumours

India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has broken silence on his future with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) amid the trade rumours. According to a report from India Today, Nitish had expressed his desire to leave SRH over his role in the team, especially after being pushed down the batting order. However, the 22-year-old all-rounder on Sunday took to social media to issue clarification, saying that he will always stand by his current IPL team. "I tend to stay away from the noise, but some things deserve clarity. My connection with SRH is built on trust, respect, and years of shared passion. I'll always stand by this team," wrote Reddy on his 'X' account. Ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction, Visakhapatnam-based Reddy was retained by SRH at Rs six crore. It came after Reddy amassed 303 runs in 13 matches and also took three wickets in IPL 2024, which paved his way for selection into India T20I and Test teams. But Reddy failed to repeat his heroics in IPL 2025 - scoring only 182 runs in 13 games and didn't bowl a lot of overs due to his recovery from a side strain which kept him out of action after the first T20I against England earlier this year.
