Historic 1800s Highland mill to get new lease of life

It was built to support new industrial approaches to agriculture in the early 1800s before being given to the community and used as a gathering space after World War II and then eventually lying derelict for more than 40 years.
The funding boost means Balmacara Community Trust has now secured more than £1 million for the project.
The Old Mill Hall sits at the centre of Balmacara Square and is the only unrestored building in the historic setting.

The condition of the building detracts from a picturesque area but it being renovated will allow another part of Highland history to be recognised.
Caroline Clark, The National Lottery Heritage Fund Director for Scotland said; 'Balmacara Old Mill Hall has stood witness to changing ways of life over two centuries. Throughout most of that time it was a hub of community activity, first through industry then from 1946 as a shared gathering space.
'Sadly, mounting repairs forced its closure in the 1980s and we are delighted that thanks to National Lottery players we can support this project led by local people to restore the Old Mill Hall and see it back at the heart of life in their community.'

Mike Shucksmith Chair of Balmacara Community Trust said; 'We are delighted to secure The National Lottery Heritage Fund's support for the restoration. We are grateful to National Lottery players who made it possible and to all of our funders who have helped us reach this stage in the project and who continue to support us.'
The Old Mill Hall was initially gifted to the community in 1946 by Lady Hamilton and forms part of Bamacara Square, an early example of the Model Farms that were developed throughout the Victorian Era.
It started life as a watermill and features of that will be reflected in the restoration.
Work has already been carried out to retain features and has already uncovered other lost features, including a wheel pit and mill lade, the internal fly wheel pit which was hidden beneath a raised ground and evidence of the original façade.

Hundreds in Rochdale join dig to unearth town's history

More than 600 people have taken part a community dig to uncover the history of Rochdale town excavations of the site, known as Broadfield slopes, have found the foundations of an 18th century corn mill, a weighing station, and glass school children and voluntary organisations were invited to get involved in the dig, which lasted two was part of a wider project to research and regenerate the area between the town hall and a church. Pupils from Marland Hill primary school were among those who took part in the 'Big dig', a project which is just the latest investigation at the site. There have been a series of excavations of the land since 2021, and they have discovered artefacts from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Lead archaeologist, Dr Colin Elder, said: "There's so much. It's a site that just keeps on giving, which is why we've got so many digs out of it. "Because we have such a long presence of human existence and activity on this slope, marked by the medieval church and then chopped and changed so drastically by the Georgians and the Victorians, we're hitting different time periods as we're coming down."Dr Elder and his team visited schools and community groups to talk to volunteers before they went to the added: "As much as the archaeology is super impressive, it's the community engagement in this project that really stands out." This dig is part of a wider £3 million project, with £1.4 million, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, spent to open the slope up and get the public using the area again. There will be new stone steps, landscaping and a restoration of the Packer Spout Fountain once the dig is Meredith, Rochdale Council's cabinet member for regeneration, said: "This is a knock on from the work on the (renovation of the) town hall. "It's part of a wider picture of what we're doing in this area to make it look nice for the people of Rochdale so they can be proud of where they live."Helen Featherstone, the director, for England North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: "We're delighted to be supporting the Broadfield Park Slopes project, and that it is giving the communities of Rochdale the opportunity to get truly hands-on with their local heritage, and discover some of the fascinating stories of the history of their hometown."The Big Dig is one of a number of events taking place across the borough during Rochdale's year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture. ‘Papa Jake' Larson, D-day veteran and TikTok star, dies aged 102

D-day veteran ″Papa Jake″ Larson, who survived German gunfire on Normandy's beaches in 1944 and then garnered 1.2 million followers on TikTok late in life by sharing stories to commemorate the second world war and his fallen comrades, has died aged 102. An animated speaker who charmed strangers young and old with his quick smile and generous hugs, the self-described country boy from Minnesota was 'cracking jokes til the end,'' his granddaughter wrote in announcing his death. Tributes to him quickly filled his Story Time with Papa Jake TikTok account from across the United States, where he had been living in Lafayette, California. Towns around Normandy, still grateful to Allied forces who helped defeat the occupying Nazis in the second world war, paid homage too. 'Our beloved Papa Jake has passed away on July 17th at 102 years young,' granddaughter McKaela Larson posted on his social media accounts. 'He went peacefully.' 'As Papa would say, love you all the mostest,' she wrote. Born on 20 December 1922, in Owatonna, Minnesota, Larson enlisted in the National Guard in 1938, lying about his age as he was only 15 at the time. In 1942, he was sent overseas and was stationed in Northern Ireland. He became operations sergeant and assembled the planning books for the invasion of Normandy. He was among the nearly 160,000 Allied troops who stormed the Normandy shore on D-day, 6 June 1944, surviving machine-gun fire when he landed on Omaha Beach. He made it unhurt to the bluffs that overlook the beach, which were studded with German gun emplacements that killed many soldiers. 'We are the lucky ones,' Larson told the Associated Press at the 81st anniversary of D-day in June, speaking among the graves at the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. 'We are their family. We have the responsibility to honour these guys who gave us a chance to be alive.' He went on to fight through the Battle of the Bulge, a gruelling month-long fight in Belgium and Luxembourg that was one of the defining moments of the war and of Hitler's defeat. His service earned him a Bronze Star and a French Legion of Honour award. In recent years, Larson made repeated trips to Normandy for D-day commemorations. In his TikTok posts and interviews, Larson combined humorous anecdotes with somber reminders about the horrors of war. Speaking to AP on the three years he was in Europe, Larson said he is 'no hero.' Speaking in 2024, he also had a message to world leaders: 'Make peace not war.' He often called himself 'the luckiest man in the world,' and expressed awe at all the attention he was getting. 'I'm just a country boy. Now I'm a star on TikTok,' he told AP in 2023. 'I'm a legend! I didn't plan this, it came about.'
