Boardman ready to continue historic run at state final 4

Yahoo04-06-2025
BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Boardman softball is currently having a dream season with the Spartans' first final four appearance since 2002 and district title win since 2011.
'Everything they've done I've asked for and then some,' said Boardman head coach Fred Mootz. 'Every big moment during the season, they've showed up and they've produced when it mattered most.'
Boardman downed Louisville 3-1 in the Division III Regional Final to advance to state.
'We have so much to prove and everyone doubts us throughout the community, throughout the area,' said Boardman senior pitcher Tori Strines. 'We came out this year and showed that we can be that team.'
The Spartans started off their run with a 5-0 Division III District Championship win over Howland in late May.
'Everyone sleeps on Boardman and we've got to prove it,' said Boardman senior third baseman Alex Ward. 'Don't sleep on us, this year we finally proved that. People are starting to wake up.'
Boardman's current overall season record is (25-4).
'No matter who we play, we need to play our game because if we play our game, we can beat any team,' said Boardman freshman catcher Addie Rudge.
Boardman will play Holland Springfield in the 2025 OHSAA Division III State Semifinals, Friday, June 6, at 12:30 p.m. at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

Michigan State basketball lands commitment from 2026 point guard Carlos Medlock Jr.

Michigan State basketball has started the 2026 recruiting class with a bang, landing a point guard prospect from their home state. Carlos Medlock Jr. has made his commitment to Michigan State on Friday, choosing the Spartans over Creighton, Iowa, Michigan, Oklahoma State and Tennessee. Recently, Medlock Jr., a native of Wayne, Michigan, announced that he will be making the trip up to East Lansing for an official visit on grind week on Sept. 5. A 5-foot-11, 165 pound guard, he ranks as the No. 99 overall player in the 2026 class according to 247Sports, but is due for a ratings increase after blowing up this summer. The in-state product started his high school career at Wayne Memorial High School within the state, but will be finishing it at Link Academy in Missouri before going to MSU. Spartans talk about Jonathan Smith's leadership traits, 'brilliant football brain'

"He's definitely a brilliant football brain." That was what one of the three Spartans in attendance at Big Ten Football Media Days had to say about head coach Jonathan Smith. The leadership and ability to trust his staff were two notable items called out by a pair of Spartans during a round table discussion on the Big Ten Network's season preview show on Thursday from Las Vegas. "He gives the other coaches that authority," Spartans wide receiver Nick Marsh said. "He lets them take course for the team. We have a few other coaches that act like the head coach (as well)." "He's more of a reserved guy -- cool, calm and collective," Michigan State offensive lineman Stanton Ramil added. "When he really wants to make that point, it's definitely made. He's definitely a brilliant football brain." Smith is entering his second season as the Spartans head coach, with fans expecting a better outcome than year one under Smith. The Spartans failed to reach bowl eligibility, finishing the year with a 5-7 record. There seems to be more momentum, though, for Michigan State to bounce back this season and reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2021. Michigan State football linebacker Jordan Hall talks about trusting the process at MSU

When Jordan Hall first arrived on campus in 2023, he was a top-200 recruit in the country and flashed some ability right out of the gate. In 2024, he thought he would have his coming-out party as the starting middle linebacker, calling plays for the Michigan State defense. Things changed when the Spartans opted to bring in Wisconsin linebacker Jordan Turner. At the Big Ten Media Days this week, Hall talked about MSU's decision to bring in Turner. According to Hall, in a video recorded by Spartans Illustrated, MSU defensive coordinator Joe Rossi was very transparent about why they brought in Turner to be the starter last year, and how he thinks Hall can rise to that level. In a college football landscape that very commonly sees players in that position transfer immediately out of the program, Jordan Hall explained that he instead decided to trust the process and the coaching staff and stay at MSU.
