Sarasota's Smart City Initiative recognized with international award
The city in partnership with Mote Marine Laboratory, monitors beach conditions including red tide in real time. Locals and visitors are able to access up-to-date data daily from 17 locations citywide. This can range from beach conditions and weather to the surf and crowd size at a beach.
New affordable housing community in Winter Haven offers people a way out of homelessness
As part of the initiative, the city also launched internet at four city parks. The Wi-Fi access is free to users at Arlington Park, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, Payne Park, and Bayfront Park. Officials say they saw a big uptick in usership following last years devastating hurricanes.
The city has also been utilizing AI software at 16 intersections across the city, aimed at improving safety. The cameras give city officials real-time data 24/7 of how drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians make their way through each intersection.
'This system detects unsafe behaviors, like rolling stops, failure to yield, and improper use of crosswalks and bike lanes,' City Engineer Nikesh Patel said. 'This data helps us design safer intersections and make the smart improvements that protect everyone sharing the road. We can use this data to improve signal timing, signage, and intersection operations to encourage safe and legal crossing. We use this data to adjust signal striping, signage, and operation improvement to promote safer crossing. It also helps coordinate enforcement outreach with the Sarasota Police Department.'
The technology at those 16 intersections can also communicate directly with drivers in newer cars equipped with certain technology.
'These roadside units send real time alerts to drivers when pedestrians, cyclists or scooters are detected ahead,' Patel explained. 'Our drive is to really save peoples lives and reduce the amount of serious crashes and fatalities throughout the city.'

2 people, including a child, rescued after going overboard on Disney Cruise ship: Reports
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WFLA) – A man and child were rescued from the ocean after going overboard on a Disney Cruise Line voyage, passengers reported on social media. The Disney Dream ship was sailing from the Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale on Sunday when the child fell into the water for an unknown reason, according to witnesses who watched the rescue. Fellow passengers said a man they assumed to be her father jumped into the water after her, as first reported by The Street. 'This man jumped in after her and helped her stay afloat for at least 20 minutes while the rescue team pulled off a rescue I will never forget,' one passenger wrote on TikTok, in a post including footage of a rescue boat approaching the two passengers treading water in the ocean. 'Honestly while praying for the best, I was not expecting them to find them,' wrote a separate passenger, who also filmed part of the rescue. 'Tiny dots left behind in a massive ocean.' Another video, taken after the rescue boat was safely back at the ship, showed a woman cradling what appeared to be a young child. 'The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,' a spokesperson for the Disney Cruise Line wrote in an emailed statement to Nexstar's WFLA. 'We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols.' Disney did not disclose how the child fell or whether she was injured. Onlookers — and those commenting on the videos — were just relieved she was able to return to the ship. 'I'm so thankful both the man and little girl are safe,' one passenger said. 'And for anyone who wants to judge how something like this happens, it can happen in the blink of an eye.'

Americans fleeing Israel on evacuation flights to Florida
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Americans fleeing the deadly conflict between Israel and Iran are heading back to the U.S. thanks, in part, to Florida officials. Early Wednesday, a cruise ship transported roughly 1,500 people from Israel to Cyprus. From there, some boarded a plane bound for Tampa. Carrie Best-Lary, from Broward County, was one of those transported to Cyprus. She had traveled to Israel for a 10-day trip sponsored by the Birthright Israel Foundation, just ahead of her 50th birthday. Now, instead of reconnecting with her Jewish identity, she's fleeing back to the United States after barrages of Iranian missile strikes targeted Israel, following Israel's missile strikes on Iran. 'We saw explosions … we saw missiles,' she said. 'We heard sirens … we went to (the) shelter the minute we got that notification.' 'It's a very scary time,' she continued. Birthright Israel officials said Gov. Ron DeSantis helped coordinate four wide-body planes to fly all U.S. participants to Tampa. From there, they will be able to continue on to their respective hometowns. Tampa Jewish Community Relations Council Chair Jonathan Ellis said he's proud of the effort made by Florida's governor, as 1,500 Americans now have a path to escape the conflict and come back home. 'Florida has the resources to make sure that American citizens can get back to the U.S. that were stranded in Israel,' he said. 'You have to commend him for the actions he's taking.' 'Look, Gov. DeSantis has been a tremendous friend to the state of Israel,' he added. 'He has a commitment to, not only the state of Israel, but to the citizens of the state of Florida and to the American citizens.' Countries all over the world, meanwhile, are evacuating their nationals from Israel and Iran by air, land and sea as conflict rages between the bitter rivals. Days of attacks and reprisals by the two enemies have shuttered airspace across the Middle East, severely disrupting commercial flights and leaving people unable to get in or out of the region easily. Some governments are even using land borders to get their citizens out by road to countries where airports remain open. Thousands of foreigners have already left since the conflict started last Friday when Israel launched surprise missile strikes on Iran. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

‘We will not be intimidated': Tampa Bay organizers increase security ahead of area protests
TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With dozens of Tampa Bay area protests against policies enforced by the Trump Administration expected Saturday, safety is a concern for many. In other cities, some demonstrations have turned violent. Florida state and local officials spoke against riots. 'We are not California. We do not allow rioting in the state of Florida,' said Florida State Attorney General James Uthmeier. 'We do not tolerate rioting as groups talk about assembling over the weekend, we haven't seen much of that in Florida. But if you do… we are ready across the state to ensure it is nipped in the bud right away.' 'We will kill you': Democrats, Republicans at odds over protest warning language Threats of violence have been seen on social media. The Citrus County Sheriff's Office posted about a scheduled protest in Inverness, then they followed up with a video about the post. 'I am hopeful that some of the negative comments referring to violence or disruptions are made by a small minority, and maybe not even people from Citrus County,' said Sheriff David Vincent. In Jacksonville, a man was arrested for threatening potential protesters when he posted a comment saying in part, 'I seen any large gatherings to protest ICE, I'm going to grab my buddies tow truck and plow through.' 'Well, it's certainly scary but we will not be intimidated by threats of violence,' said Helen Amburgey, an organizer with Pinellas NOW. She said their priority is getting their message across in a safe way. 'Everyone at our event is committed to a peaceful protest. We make sure of that when they sign up,' Amburgey said. 'In light of current events, we have recruited additional volunteers, additional safety marshals.' Amburgey said if someone starts causing problems during a peaceful protest, do not engage with them. Instead, she said to move to another area and get law enforcement involved if necessary. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
