PKL: Aslam hopes for triumphant return after knee surgery
The 25-year-old, who plays for Puneri Paltan in the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), tore his meniscus last November while attempting a raid against Telugu Titans and was instantly ruled out of the season.
Aslam's absence well and truly hamstrung Paltan who slipped from their pole position to finish eighth, winning only nine of their 22 matches. For Aslam, who had captained Paltan to the title in the previous year (2023) and was also named the edition's MVP, it was a double blow.
'Being injured was bad enough but to watch the team's slide and not being able to help them on the mat really hurt,' he said.
'I followed our matches on TV while recuperating and even spoke to some players, but there's only so much you can do from the sidelines. I could feel the team's morale go down after each reversal.'
After being operated on by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in Mumbai, Aslam went through an extended rehabilitation programme and is now primed for a comeback when the 12th edition of the league rolls out on August 29.
'The tear was so bad that I needed about 40 stitches on my knee. But all that is behind me now. I am feeling strong and agile,' he said from Thane where Paltan are currently having a month-long preparatory camp that will end on July 20. The squad will assemble again on August 3 for another camp.
'The biggest challenge was to stay mentally strong; you do not have a choice,' he added.
It is natural for athletes to develop a mental block after surgery. Many also struggle to maintain their weight, making comeback trickier. None of those issues exist for Aslam, or so he claims.
'I feel no fear, no pain. There are no mental barriers. My weight is around 74 kgs which is what it used to be during PKL. I have put on some muscle as well. In fact, my coach and physio have to literally push me out of the mat,' he added.
While Dr Pardiwala recommended a three-month rehab, Aslam extended it by a couple of more months to gradually build his strength and endurance.
'I wanted to give my mind and body enough time. Perhaps that's why I don't feel that mental block. I skipped the National Games and just worked hard in the gym,' Aslam, who scoured Patrick Mouratoglou's Champion Mindset and rewatched Bollywood hit Dangal for motivation during his time away from sport, added.

Brotherhood born in bathroom: Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf's hilarious bond is more than just QB-WR duo at Steelers training camp
Rodgers and Metcalf begin Steelers bond with a shared toilet at training camp (Image via : Getty Images) The Pittsburgh Steelers are banking on the chemistry between two of their biggest offseason additions: quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver DK Metcalf. Their connection could define the success of the 2025 season, and surprisingly, it's already off to a strong (and hilarious) start thanks to a shared bathroom at training camp. Dorm room flush sparks unexpected bond between Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers and WR DK Metcalf The Steelers are holding training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where players live in college-style dorms. Rodgers and Metcalf ended up in adjacent rooms, meaning they also share a bathroom. It didn't take long for the setup to create a memorable moment. According to Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein, Metcalf recalled a conversation with Rodgers about the bathroom situation: 'The toilet is super loud,' he said. Rodgers responded with a simple rule: 'At night, if we got to piss, just don't flush the toilet.' Metcalf agreed. But around 9:30 p.m., nature called. Before flushing, Metcalf texted Rodgers: 'You asleep yet?' Rodgers replied he wasn't. Metcalf gave the heads-up—'I'm about to flush the toilet'—and did just that. It's a funny anecdote, but it speaks volumes about their early chemistry. Even in small, personal moments, the two are communicating, syncing, and building trust, something every quarterback-receiver duo needs. Rodgers-Metcalf connection could be X-Factor in Steelers' 2025 NFL campaign The Steelers didn't just toss Rodgers and Metcalf into adjacent rooms by chance. The front office knows how crucial this pairing will be. Rodgers, a four-time MVP, brings experience, poise, and leadership. Metcalf, with his elite speed and physicality, is a game-changer. Building timing, trust, and communication off the field can pay dividends when it matters most. Dorm-room dynamics might seem minor, but they reflect how Rodgers and Metcalf are already aligning as teammates and maybe as leaders. FAQs Are Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf roommates at Steelers training camp? Not exactly. Rodgers and Metcalf are in separate dorm rooms at Saint Vincent College but share a connecting bathroom, which has led to some amusing and human moments early in their Steelers journey. Why did the Steelers pair Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf together during camp? The Steelers intentionally paired Rodgers and Metcalf closely to accelerate their chemistry. As the team's new quarterback and top wideout, building off-field trust is key to success on the field. How important is the Rodgers-Metcalf connection to the Steelers' 2025 NFL season ? Extremely important. The Steelers' offense is being rebuilt around this duo, and their ability to sync up quickly could determine the team's playoff chances this season. Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf's bond could shape Steelers' season As the 2025 NFL season approaches, Pittsburgh's hopes rest on more than just talent. 'We're Confident And Ready': Gaurav Khatri Eyes More Glory In PKL Season 12
Gaurav Khatri, inspired by Kabaddi from a young age, joined Puneri Paltan in Season 9 as an injury replacement. Despite losing the final, they won the trophy in Season 10. Puneri Paltan's star defender Gaurav Khatri's story is nothing short of a Bollywood script. Having been brought up in a household where Kabaddi was a known sport, Khatri's interest piqued at a very early age, even featuring in local tournaments at age 15. Being a part of Pro Kabaddi League had always been on his bucket list and this bucket was finally ticked when he was picked up by Puneri Paltan as an injury replacement during Season 9. While the side missed to lift the cup by a whisker, losing to Jaipur Pink Panthers in the final, they eventually got their hands on the coveted trophy in the very next edition. The Paltan and Khatri are now gearing up for Season 12 and want to replicate the kind of performance they had unleashed in Season 10. 'We are very confident and ready for the upcoming season. We want to repeat the way we played in Season 10. We will give our 100%. The raiding department has got some more strength with the addition of Sachin (Tanwar) bhai. Aslam (Inamdar), Mohit (Goyat) and Pankaj (Mohite) were already there, so we are going to work hard," he said during the latest episode of the 'Rise of a Star' series. Khatri got into the team after one of the players was affected by COVID-19 during Season 9. It was a clash against the Bengaluru Bulls where he first got a chance to showcase his talent. 'During the encounter against Bengaluru Bulls in one of the matches (in Season 9), I got my first opportunity when the coach asked me to go in as a substitute. Obviously, I felt nervous but at the same time, it was a good feeling as I was living my dream. I did my first tackle against Bharat Hooda who was the best raider at that time. I got points for my team and felt good about it. We lost the game but the team was pretty happy with my performance," Khatri said. 'Then, the coach showed more trust in me and made me play in the semi-final and final matches of the season. I got a chance in the semis because Sombir was out due to fever. I didn't have any experience of playing in the playoffs but the coach gave me the confidence," he further added. The young defender considers himself fortunate to be part of a championship-winning team so early in his career. Reflecting on his journey, he said, 'When I came in Season 10, there was of course some pressure, but at the same time, everyone motivated me. They gave me a free hand and encouraged me to play my natural game. I feel lucky and very fortunate that I became a champion in just my second season" A key influence in his early days was Iranian star Mohammadreza Shadloui. 'I also shared a very good bond with Mohammadreza Shadloui. He treated me like a younger brother," he added. Khatri expressed heartfelt gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support throughout the Pro Kabaddi League. 'The Pro Kabaddi League has truly changed my life. It's given me a platform, an identity, and the chance to grow as a player," he concluded. The Pro Kabaddi League Season 12 will be broadcast live on the Star Sports Network and streamed on JioHotstar. view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: July 25, 2025, 21:19 IST News sports 'We're Confident And Ready': Gaurav Khatri Eyes More Glory In PKL Season 12 Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. How Many Tests Does Joe Root Need To Beat Sachin Tendulkar's Most Runs Record?
Joe Root has surpassed Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. How many Tests does he need to go past Sachin Tendulkar? Joe Root is on a record-breaking spree and the biggest record left for him is India great Sachin Tendulkar's for most runs ever in Test cricket — 15,921. On Friday (July 25), he became the second-highest run-scorer in the format with 13380 runs, going past Rahul Dravid (13288), Jaques Kallis (13289), and Ricky Ponting (13378) in the same innings of 121* (201), at Tea in the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford. The question begs itself — can Root be the one to break Tendulkar's currently 12-year-old record, which many thought would never be touched, which Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and several other greats couldn't come even close to? If he can, how many Tests would he need to do so and etch him at the top of the world? It's difficult to say exactly, but Root has averaged 89 since the start of 2024, and according to CricViz (a sports analytics company), if he maintains that rate, he will need only 29 more Tests to pass Tendulkar and become the format's leading run scorer. Considering England play at least a dozen Tests every year (they played 17 in 2024), he'd need about two and a half years to reach the feat. To put how quick Root is in context, the 17 Tests in 2024 yielded 1556 runs for him. Of course, this is the best-case scenario. Apart from the difficulty of maintaining a purple patch like this for that significant period, Root would also need to keep himself fit. He's 34 and will turn 35 this December, and though he's fit, it'll become progressively arduous for him to maintain fitness, just like Tendulkar, Kallis, and Ponting also faced. However, Tendulkar played 200 Tests, and Ponting 168, while Root is still at 157. Ponting's prediction for Root's records Earlier in the day, Ponting had tipped Root to break his record. He was also asked about the Englishman's chances of going past Tendulkar. 'There's still a fair bit to go," Ponting told ICC. 'What is he, 35? Doesn't look like his passion for the game is going anywhere. His run-scoring passion has probably gone up over the years. Can he chase down Sachin? Let's see. He might as well do that," he added.
