Harry Teinowitz, beloved Chicago sports radio host, dies at 64
Zoom in: Teinowitz began his career as an actor and stand-up comedian, before pairing up with fellow comedian Spike Manton to host "Spike & Harry" weekday afternoons on ESPN 1000.
Teinowitz hosted several programs over his decades-long career, including the top-rated shows "McNeil, Jurko and Harry" and "Mac, Jurko and Harry" on ESPN 1000 in the 2000s.
As an actor, he had small roles in Chicago films like "Risky Business," "Return to Me" and "Up the Academy."
What they're saying:"Harry lived to make people laugh and to make people happy," Manton told the Tribune. "There was just never a night he wasn't watching at least two different games."
Zoom out: Teinowitz made headlines for his run-ins both on and off the mic. He was suspended a few times for fights with co-host Dan McNeil, but it was his high-profile drunk driving arrest in 2011 that led him to rehab and ultimately ended his relationship with ESPN in 2013.
In 2021, he took those experiences and turned them into a stage play called " When Harry Met Rehab." The play ran off-Broadway last fall.

ESPN power ranks mascots. Where is Ohio State mascot Brutus?
There aren't too many college mascots more beloved than Ohio State mascot, Brutus. He's an iconic one and has been around a long, long time, even becoming beloved by longtime ESPN College GameDay host, Lee Corso. In fact, Corso has put the Brutus head on more than any other college mascot. Brutus has evolved over the years to the current appearance of wearing a uniform with a Buckeye Nut head that's much, much smaller than it was when first introduced in 1965. Either way, there aren't too many mascots that are as recognizable as Brutus is across college athletics. He's not a fearsome mascot, but a fun, wildly popular, high energy one that interacts with fans. But where would Brutus fit if power ranking mascots? That is, of course, a subjective question, but one that ESPN's Ryan McGee set out to answer. He published a piece last week power ranking mascots across different divisions, and Brutus was featured in the "Costume Divison." McGee only identified the top five and had Brutus at the No. 2 spot, right behind the Oregon Duck at No. 1. "As hard as it is to believe, before 1965 there was no mascot in Columbus," McGee said. "After flirting with the idea of bringing a live buck onto the sidelines of the Horseshoe, a student vote settled on Buckeyes, honoring the official state tree of Ohio, and the name Brutus. "Over the years, Brutus generally has been considered the template for the "person in clothes but with a huge plastic head" model for modern mascot business. Thankfully, Brutus has experienced some extreme cranial makeovers -- and shrinkage -- through the ages. The O.G. O-H-I-O Buckeye looked more like a chocolate bonbon bowling ball than a fearsome football foe." So, what other costumed mascots made the top five? Behind Brutus and the Duck were Big Red of Western Kentucky (3), the Stanford Tree (4), and Keggy the Keg of Dartmouth at No. 4 (I have to admit I didn't know that was a thing, but brownie points for being creative). Now, being an Ohio State website, of course, many aren't going to like Brutus finishing behind the Oregon Duck, but the Duck does get cool points for coming out on a motorcycle and trolling other schools in a lighthearted way. Let's call it 1A and 1B, shall we? You can get a look at the other divisions and rankings of the mascot power rankings by visiting and taking a look at a fun list to look at during the offseason. That's Awkward: Joe Buck's Interaction With Michael Strahan Sparks Rumors
That's Awkward: Joe Buck's Interaction With Michael Strahan Sparks Rumors originally appeared on The Spun. In case you haven't been paying close attention, ESPN announcer Joe Buck has spent the past few days hosting "Good Morning America" on ABC. Buck, the voice of "Monday Night Football," is filling in for ABC broadcaster George Stephanopoulos. According to reports, the latter is on vacation. The rest of the "Good Morning America" crew, however, was at the studio for Friday's show. Before signing off from "Good Morning America" this Friday morning, Michael Strahan gave Buck a hug on national TV. Unfortunately for the Hall of Famer, it was a pretty awkward exchange. For some reason, Buck didn't exactly match Strahan's energy. He simply said, "Thank you." After watching Buck reluctantly embrace Strahan on "Good Morning America," sports fans are convinced they don't see eye-to-eye. At the very least, fans believe Buck is not that fond of the former NFL star. "ABC told Joe Buck, we don't think you do enough to earn your salary, so we're going to torture you by having to be on the same set a few days with someone as arrogant as you, Michael Strahan," one fan wrote on X. "Joe Buck and Michael Strahan look totally comfortable with this embrace," Awful Announcing wrote. We'll see if Buck comments on this less than ideal exchange with Strahan. In the meantime, Buck is gearing up for his fourth season as the play-by-play commentator for "Monday Night Football." "During the season, Aikman and Buck work alongside Lisa Salters, Monday Night Football's longest-tenured sideline reporter. In May 2023, at the 44th Annual Sports Emmy Awards, Monday Night Football won a Sports Emmy for 'Outstanding Live Sports Series' for the MNF's 2023 season – the trio's first year together," ESPN's bio for Buck states. Buck will call a Week 1 matchup between the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8. That's Awkward: Joe Buck's Interaction With Michael Strahan Sparks Rumors first appeared on The Spun on Jul 25, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 25, 2025, where it first appeared.

ESPN sends sad message on Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders' time in Boulder
ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions Kurt Dargis made a somewhat sad revelation about Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders: His first year in Boulder was the true ratings-grabber, but the Buffs' 9-4 2024 campaign didn't get nearly the same fanfare. Dargis mentioned Sanders in a question about whether or not Bill Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels program could mirror the same monstrous ratings Colorado got during Coach Prime's first Power 4 season in 2023. Dargis sees potential for 'Chapel Bill" this fall. 'We have to wait and see. The potential is there. There's definitely interest in him outside the typical college football fan,' Dargis said during an interview with Front Office Sports, per FOS's Michael McCarthy and David Rumsey 'Deion was such a phenomenon. I still can't believe some of the numbers we got that first year he was there. It's too early to say.' Clearly, negativity sells. During a tumultuous 2023 debut for 'Prime Time,' Coach Prime's public beef with Cormani McClain took center stage. Accusations from Athlon Sports' Steve Corder that there was a 'gun culture' that season dominated the summer of 2024. The report has been scrubbed from the internet after a potential behind-the-scenes settlement, however. When CU turned it around, though? Nowhere near the same fanfare.
