
From maps to meetings, my struggles as a dyslexic adult
A lot of people believe that the effects of dyslexia are only felt in school, that adults aren't affected by dyslexia. In a yoga class, meditating in padmasana, when the instructor asks the class to start anulom vilom breathing — use your right hand, gently close your right nostril with your right thumb — I go from a state of meditative calm to a state of dyslexic panic.
I immediately open my eyes to look at the person next to me to mimic what they are doing. I'm 33 years old, and I can confirm that I still can't process multi-step verbal instructions or tell left from right easily. Being a dyslexic adult means adjusting to awkward, embarrassing and, at times, frightening situations.
It's awkward when a colleague wants me to review a document and I have to move the text to another application that's more friendly to my screen reader, where I can change the font to a font that's easier on my eyes.
As a dyslexic person, I don't read words by joining letters, I read words by recognising their shape. Since the shape of words changes with the font, my reading speed depends on the shape of the font.
When I was seeking a diagnosis at the age of 20, an age when I could legally drink, drive, and consent to sex, the govt hospital needed my parent's signature to let me take the dyslexia assessment. My dyslexia evaluation used tests developed in the US. These weren't adapted to the Indian context or education system and may be inadequate to test those who haven't done their formal education in English

It's embarrassing when I am in a conference room at work where my peers and seniors are addressing me by my name and, despite significant conscious efforts, I can't remember their names. If I know who's invited to a meeting, I look at their profile pictures, their names, and look up their names' pronunciations before the meeting, but multiple faceless profiles on the invite make me nervous. I cope by addressing them with pronouns — you/they/she made a great point!
It's frightening when I'm in a foreign country trying to read a map to find my way around.
Sitting in a bus stop chanting the bus number in my head so I don't forget it, just to get on a bus and realise after a few stops that I'm going in the wrong direction. I have been confused and stranded more times than I can count. Dyslexia is a learning disability that primarily affects reading and writing skills due to difficulties processing language.
The International Dyslexia Association claims that as many as 15-20% of the global population could have dyslexia.
Dyslexia is not a reflection of a person's intelligence or effort: many highly intelligent and creative individuals, including successful entrepreneurs, scientists and artists, are dyslexic. Dyslexia is not something a person can 'grow out of', but early detection and remedial education help dyslexic individuals learn strategies to improve their reading and writing skills.
My understanding of dyslexia is still evolving, I was already an adult when I was diagnosed with dyslexia.
My evaluation involved a psychiatric assessment, an IQ test, and a series of tests that aimed to map my reading and writing skills to the standardised skill levels of various school grades. A psychiatrist then evaluated my reading and writing tests along with my IQ test and diagnosed me with dyslexia. Because skills are mapped to school grades, it's harder to get diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult.
Perhaps most telling of this fact is when I was seeking a diagnosis at the age of 20, an age when I could legally drink, drive, and consent to sex, the government hospital needed my parent's signature to let me take the dyslexia assessment.
My dyslexia evaluation used the Woodcock-Johnson 3 assessment and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale IQ test which were both developed in the US. These tests weren't adapted to the Indian context or education system and may be inadequate to test those who haven't done their formal education in English, making them inaccessible and ineffective to most Indians.
As a dyslexic adult, I possess a unique cognitive toolkit that sets me apart.
My mind excels at interconnected reasoning and abstract thinking, allowing me to quickly discern hidden connections and intricate patterns within complex, evolving systems. This enables me to leverage my dyslexic creativity to solve challenging problems with innovative solutions. Dyslexia also fuels my ability to be an empathetic storyteller.
I can craft vivid narratives and deliver clear, engaging messages that resonate with others. Navigating an ableist world has made me resourceful and flexible, which makes me a highly effective team player. My professional achievements — a fast-paced career in tech and winning the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar for my book 'Homeless' — are a direct result of dyslexia, not in spite of it.

Most UP Board textbooks see price hike up to 8 times, few get cheaper
Prayagraj: NCERT-based textbooks for the UP Board have become significantly pricier this academic year, with some books increasing in price up to eight times. The UP Board has revised prices for several NCERT-based textbooks, bringing notable changes after seven years. The price hike for UP Board textbooks, aligned with NCERT commissions, aims to encourage publishers and retailers to produce and sell the books. Despite the increase, UP Board textbooks remain cheaper than NCERT books. This move is expected to benefit over 1 crore students in more than 28,000 UP Board-affiliated schools by ensuring better availability of textbooks. Among the textbooks for Class 9-12 that have become more expensive are English, Chemistry, and Sociology. Despite these increases, UP Board books are still more affordable than NCERT textbooks in many subjects. For instance, books in subjects like Mathematics and Physics are being offered by the UP Board at prices significantly lower than their NCERT counterparts, ensuring continued accessibility for students. Interestingly, the prices of some books have also been reduced. Class 12 Physics Part-1 has become cheaper this year. In Class 11, the psychology book 'Introduction to Psychology' has been made more affordable. The cost of two Physics textbooks in Class 11 has also been brought down. Likewise, the Geography book 'Fundamentals of Physical Geography' for Class 11 is now available at a lower rate, making these subjects easier to access for students from various backgrounds. Class 11 Chemistry Part-1 will be available for Rs 133, up from Rs 72. Meanwhile, Class 12 Sociology textbooks, which earlier cost Rs 19, will now be priced at Rs 167. Additionally, Class 12 English textbooks, formerly priced at Rs 18, will now cost Rs 79. Some textbooks have seen price reductions. Class 12 Physics Part-1 is now available for Rs 43, down from Rs 64. Class 11's 'Introduction to Psychology' textbook is now priced at Rs 10, reduced from Rs 28. Additionally, two Class 11 Physics books have become cheaper by Rs 32. Class 11's geography book 'Fundamentals of Physical Geography' is now available for Rs 10, down from Rs 23. The price revision and increased availability of UP Board books will provide relief to students, who can now access affordable textbooks. Previously, students had to rely on expensive private publisher books. With UP Board books being up to ten times cheaper, students can save money and access authorized study materials. NCERT books are also expected to hit the market soon.

21 students of GD Goenka crack CUET
A total of 21 students of GD Goenka Public School, Lucknow have qualified the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2025. Of them, Lorik Yadav achieved a percentile score of 100 in all the four subjects: English, economics, history and political science. School chairman Sarvesh Goel congratulated all the successful students of CUET.

Another Gaur Killed on Ballarshah-Gondia Railway Track
Chandrapur: A fully grown Indian Gaur was killed after being hit by a passenger train on the Ballarshah-Gondia route on Friday evening. The accident occurred in Compartment No 474 under Junona range when train number 68816, travelling from Gondia to Ballarshah, collided with the animal. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to wildlife activists of Habitat Conservation Society, who visited the spot, the impact was so intense that the train dragged the gaur for nearly 120 metres, dismembering the body and scattering flesh and horns across the tracks. The train was reportedly briefly halted before it resumed its journey towards Chandrapur after remains of the Gaur were cleared of the track. This is the second such incident in recent months. A similar accident had occurred in February in Compartment No. 413, raising serious concerns over the safety of wildlife in the area. A few days back a pregnant Sambar was killed in similar collision with the speeding train on the same railway track. The Ballarshah-Gondia railway line passes through areas adjoining the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and is a critical wildlife corridor connecting Kanhargaon Sanctuary, Kawal Sanctuary, and Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary to Tadoba. Conservationists note that the track connects ahead to the Balaghat-Nainpur section in Madhya Pradesh, where effective mitigation structures like underpasses and overpasses have been installed, however this track through Maharashtra lacks effective mitigation measures. Experts and environmental groups are urging the railway authorities in Maharashtra to adopt similar measures to prevent further loss of wildlife. "Concrete action is the need of the hour. Mere proposals or committee discussions won't help unless they lead to on-ground changes," said president of Habitat Conservation Society, Dinesh Khate, Khate along with Kiran Bavaskar and Amit Deshmukh, visited the site and informed Junona Forest Range officials. Forest guard Gajanan Lute and other forest workers later visited the spot to complete the formalities.
