
China can't buy Nvidia's RTX 4090. Now its optical chip is twice as fast
Chinese researchers have developed the first highly parallel optical computing integrated chip, named 'Meteor-1', setting a milestone for using light to perform an enormous number of operations at the same time, the scientists say.
The advance promises hardware acceleration for AI and data centres struggling with soaring computational demands.
The chip achieves a theoretical peak computing power of 2,560 TOPS (tera-operations per second) at 50GHz optical frequency – performance comparable to Nvidia's advanced GPUs – according to a report by Chinese publisher DeepTech last week.
Nvidia's latest GeForce RTX 5090 graphic card, for instance, peaks at 3,352 TOPS while its previous flagship RTX 4090 only reached 1,321 TOPS. In the past, optical chips remained mostly in laboratory settings, and could not come close to commercial flagship GPUs in real-life tasks.
Nvidia's 4090 and 5090 are effectively banned for sale to China because of US export controls on advanced semiconductors and AI chips that could aid Beijing in advancing its military capabilities.
As traditional electronic chips hit fundamental physical limits – from heat build-up, quantum effects and unsustainable power consumption – optical computing emerges as a critical future direction. Its inherent advantages, such as ultra-high speed, broad bandwidth, low power and minimal latency, position it to overcome these barriers.
Progress in optical computing has long focused on two key challenges: scaling up the matrix size and increasing optical frequency. Existing top models – exemplified by prototypes from TSMC and the California Institute of Technology – are pushing against both engineering and physical limits.
Consequently, a third way – expanding computational parallelism, or the ability of chips to multitask – has become the necessary path forward.
In a paper published on June 17 in eLight journal, Xie Peng and Han Xilin of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) and Hu Guangwei of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, detailed a novel optical computing system that could hold more than 100 frequency channels in a single photonic chip.
'This achievement enables a 100-fold increase (and even beyond) in optical computility through ultra-high parallelism without scaling up the chip size, offering a novel technological pathway for future optical computers,' they said in the paper.
Han told DeepTech of the economic potential: 'This breakthrough promises to elevate optical computing to a cost-performance level competitive with electronic chips.'
The integrated Meteor-1 system features fully self-developed architecture, including a light source chip, optical interaction chip, optical computing chip and a modulation matrix driver board.
The light source chip uses an integrated micro-cavity optical frequency comb with an output spectrum exceeding 80 nanometres (nm), supporting more than 200 wavelengths. This chip-scale multi-wavelength source replaces hundreds of individual lasers, drastically reducing system size, power consumption and cost while boosting integration.
The core optical computing chip itself boasts a high transmission bandwidth over 40nm, enabling low-latency parallel processing. Complementing this, the team's custom-designed driver board features more than 256 channels for precise optical signal control and efficient processing.
Leveraging this system, the team set a world recording running more than 100 tasks at the same time on the system. Operating at 50GHz, the single chip delivers theoretical peak computing power of more than 2560 TOPS.
Leading researcher Xie Peng earned his PhD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States and then conducted research at Oxford University and NTU Singapore before building on those research foundations to establish the optical chip and photonic computing team at SIOM in Shanghai last year.
Xie highlighted the advantage of the team structure at the Chinese Academy of Sciences to DeepTech: 'In our team, each key technical point has dedicated experts driving deep research. This modular-to-integrated approach enabled us to complete the full-chain innovation, from fundamental research to system integration, in a relatively short time frame.
'This also explains why challenges unresolved abroad for years saw breakthroughs quickly after my return.'
'Under our parallel optical computing scheme, key metrics like computational efficiency, power consumption and latency have the potential to surpass traditional electronic computing,' Xie said.
'We firmly believe optical computing, with the scalability challenge potentially addressed by our approach, can meet AI's ever-growing computational demands and unleash a wave of new applications.' – South China Morning Post

Trump says ‘very wealthy' group to buy TikTok
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Sunday a group of buyers had been found for TikTok, which faces a looming ban in the United States due to its China ties, adding he could name the purchasers in two weeks. 'We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way,' Trump said in an interview on Fox's Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. 'Very wealthy people. It's a group of wealthy people,' the president said, without revealing more except to say he would make their identities known 'in about two weeks.' The president also said he would likely need 'China approval' for the sale, 'and I think President Xi (Jinping) will probably do it.' TikTok is owned by China-based internet company ByteDance. A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's inauguration on January 20. But the Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause. In mid-June Trump extended a deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. Tech experts quickly described the TikTok kerfuffle as a symbol of the heated US-China tech rivalry. While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform -- which boasts almost two billion global users -- after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election. 'I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,' Trump told NBC News in early May. 'If it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension.' Now after two extensions pushed the deadline to June 19, Trump has extended it for a third time. He said in May that a group of purchasers was ready to pay ByteDance 'a lot of money' for TikTok's US operations. The previous month he said China would have agreed to a deal on the sale of TikTok if it were not for a dispute over Trump's tariffs on Beijing. ByteDance has confirmed talks with the US government, saying key matters needed to be resolved and that any deal would be 'subject to approval under Chinese law.

China's driverless tech finds new traction on global roads

(Xinhua) GOING GLOBAL In late May, Chinese autonomous driving firm WeRide made headlines as its self-driving vehicles began rolling through the streets of the capital Riyadh and the historic city of AlUla in Saudi Arabia. Almost simultaneously, another major player, Guangzhou-based also shifted its global ambitions into higher gear, announcing a strategic partnership with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to launch autonomous transport services. These moves are among the latest examples of a broader trend — a larger push by Chinese autonomous vehicle (AV) developers to expand their global presence. Chinese-developed autonomous driving technologies have made inroads into a growing number of global markets — including the United States, France, Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Chinese tech giant Baidu serves as a prime example of this momentum. In the first quarter of 2025, its autonomous ride-hailing arm, Apollo Go, completed over 1.4 million rides, up 75 percent year on year, bringing its global total to over 11 million rides by May. Much of this success can be attributed to China's innovation-friendly environment. By the end of 2024, the country had established 17 national-level intelligent connected vehicle testing zones, with more than 32,000 kilometers of open test roads and over 120 million kilometers of cumulative test mileage, according to official figures. As Chinese AV firms gain global traction, collaboration with global players is deepening. Uber, for instance, has teamed up with WeRide and to integrate Chinese-developed AVs into its ride-hailing platform, starting with pilot operations in the Middle East. 'It's clear that the future of mobility will be increasingly shared, electric and autonomous,' said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. 'We look forward to working with Chinese leading AV companies to help bring the benefits of autonomous technology to cities around the world.' (Xinhua) MUTUAL BENEFITS The rise of China's autonomous driving industry is creating ripple effects across global markets, offering development opportunities far beyond transportation. Peng Jun, co-founder and CEO of said the company's overseas expansion has sparked deep collaboration across the broader mobility value chain — spanning auto manufacturing, R&D, logistics and smart mobility services. 'Deploying autonomous vehicles attracts global component suppliers to invest in local facilities, which helps form industrial clusters and boosts the competitiveness of local manufacturing,' Peng noted. The benefits go beyond factories. According to Zhang Yuxue, WeRide's director of PR and marketing, local partnerships have also led to job creation in areas such as safety operations, fleet management and technical support. Notably, as Chinese AV companies venture into regions with varied road conditions, climates and regulatory environments, their technologies are evolving in step. 'Expanding globally helps us sharpen our algorithms to adapt to complex, real-world scenarios, ranging from the narrow urban roads of Europe to the extreme heat of the Middle East,' said Zhang. Wu Qiong, an autonomous driving expert at Baidu, said Apollo Go is building a 'full-spectrum technical validation chain' as it expands overseas. 'For example, we're testing in Switzerland, a right-hand-drive country with some of the world's most stringent traffic laws, which offers one of the toughest proving grounds for autonomous vehicles,' Wu said. CHALLENGES ON ROAD AHEAD Despite impressive strides, industry insiders note that autonomous driving remains in the early stages of commercialization and global expansion. China's autonomous driving industry still faces significant headwinds on its path to global growth, said Wu Zhanchi, a professor at Jinan University. 'Challenges range from adapting to overseas regulatory frameworks and overcoming high technical localization barriers, to ensuring compliance with cross-border data regulations and fierce competition from international giants,' Wu added. 'The sector also faces significant challenges in technological innovation and the development of sustainable business models,' said Zhu Xichan, professor at Tongji University in Shanghai. Zhu emphasized that achieving scale is crucial for the long-term viability of the AV industry. 'Global expansion not only broadens the range of real-world application scenarios but also boosts deployment volumes, both of which are vital for refining technologies and developing commercially viable models,' he said. Yet, several companies have begun to tackle these hurdles head-on. Peng Jun of said the company has overcome key challenges — such as cost reduction and front-end mass production. 'Our products have reached a level of maturity, and we have achieved positive unit economics,' he noted. Looking ahead, Peng said will continue to expand in Asia, the Middle East and Europe, leveraging existing partnerships to accelerate the growth of its global footprint. Zhang Yuxue echoed this sentiment, saying that WeRide is committed to broadening its international reach by promoting a diverse fleet of autonomous solutions, ranging from robotaxis and minibuses to freight trucks, sanitation vehicles and advanced self-driving systems. General Manager of Apollo Go for Europe and the Middle East Zhang Liang said Baidu aims to build the largest driverless fleet in Abu Dhabi by partnering with local stakeholders to jointly foster a robust autonomous driving ecosystem. In addition, Baidu is exploring cooperation with local new energy firms to develop innovative services, including battery swapping, which Zhang said will help improve operational efficiency.
