‘Solo Leveling' Breaks Its Final Crunchyroll Record; Season 3 Status

Forbes18-06-2025
Solo Leveling
While we've seen many hugely popular anime offerings in the past few years, now, we seem to have landed on one that is simply bigger than all the rest, for better or worse.
That is Solo Leveling, and Sony has announced that the two seasons of the anime are not the most-viewed of all time on its Crunchyroll streaming service. This was revealed during its Business Segment Presentation & Fireside Chat for 2025, where a document within that said Solo Leveling was 'ranked #1 in Crunchyroll View Count History (as of the end of March 2025).'
So that was several months ago, and in the wake of the season 2 finale, which aired on March 29. That record was set immediately after, it seems.
The idea that Solo Leveling was the most-watched anime on the service has been a theory for a while, given that the series had become the most-reviewed on Crunchyroll, more so that even endless seasons of One Piece and that seemed like a strong hint that would be the case.
Well, it's one of the biggest animes ever already, so season 3 must be around the corner, right? Wrong. In what seems like a baffling development to some, there is no official news about Solo Leveling season 3, even if it seems like an inevitability. Those behind the show are even waffling about whether it continues, though I'm not sure I believe that.
Solo Leveling
What's going on? There are some ideas, and they mostly have to do with how the animation industry works. I found this informative take by u/electrical_chance991 a month ago in the Solo Leveling subreddit:

'A1 pictures didn't expect SL to explode as big as they did, the staff members prob signed other contracts and projects even before SL aired, their work is booked for years. So it makes sense why the producer said it'll take up to 2028.'
'They don't wanna rush it out or change the studio, they want the same team to come back and that might take some time. But I'm sure now they're thinking of long term, I doubt after season 3 we will see any major breaks like this. They will be well prepared.'
That does make sense, as it would have been hard to predict success at this level, and it is not abnormal for animes to take long breaks between seasons. But the success of the show would create some urgency, though there does not appear to be a way around the current situation. As the post says, the hope would be that this wouldn't happen a second time now that they know how big the series is. But it will be years until season 3 gets here, Crunchyroll record or not.

Why Hwang Dong-hyuk's ‘Squid Game' Will Remain A Netflix Record-Breaker

Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun (aka Player 456) in 'Squid Game' on Netflix. Squid Game creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has not only proven himself to be a genius writer and director, but he's also mastered the art of knowing when to leave the game, which is when you're on top. The highly anticipated third and final season has taken over the world, literally, by nabbing the No. 1 spot in all 93 countries where the streamer has Top 10 lists, marking the first time a show has ever achieved this in its debut week. The three-season series is a record-setter and history-maker by doing so within the third season's premiere week. The third and final season shot straight to the top of the Netflix Global Top 10, claiming the No. 1 spot this week and breaking into the Most Popular Non-English TV List at No. 9 with a stunning 60.1 million views in its first three days of viewing, breaking the record for most views for a show within that time period. Seasons one and two also made the Netflix Global Top 10 this week, with season two landing in the No. 3 spot with 2.8 million views, and season one landed at No. 6 with 1.7 million views on the TV (Non-English) list. The enormous success of the first two seasons has made this the only show ever to make the Most Popular List in its first week. The series also took over social media with season three making the most social impressions of all three seasons at this point in its campaign with 4.56 billion impressions to date across Netflix's global social channels, marking the highest ever for a Netflix social campaign. Overall, Korean culture has grabbed the attention of viewers with season three of Squid Game as Netflix's No. 1 television show, while the No. 1 movie on the English Film list this week, K-Pop Demon Hunters, was inspired by the K-wave. Other Korean titles on Netflix that are grabbing viewers include When Life Gives You Tangerines, Physical 100, and All of Us Are Dead. Korean content has become a defining force in entertainment and on Netflix, with over 80% of Netflix members globally having watched K-content. Lee Jung-jae in 'Squid Game' on Netflix. Fans welcomed Lee Jung-jae's return as Player 456, and critics praised his performance as viewership numbers solidified Dong-hyuk's massively popular Korean drama as the world's biggest TV show. Squid Game is credited with catapulting Korean content into the mainstream. Oh, how I wish my father, a U.S. Marine who fought in the Korean War, could have lived to see the success of Korean content. He loved the culture and the people he met while he was there and often lamented that the Korean War was the Forgotten War. He would've been a Squid Game fan for sure. Dong-hyuk has truly captivated the world with his creation of this universe and the game at its core, which revolves around wit, control, and power. While most successful TV series keep going as long as viewers continue watching, he decided that the third season would be the last. He recognized the importance of knowing when to say goodbye. It's like the wise lyrics from Kenny Rogers' song 'The Gambler' about knowing when to hold 'em and knowing when to fold 'em. Rogers was referring to one's hand in poker and the overarching message about knowing when to exit any given situation. It's one of the most important life strategies. In regards to Squid Game, Dong-hyuk knew when and how to end the game and as the smartest player knows, the best time is when everyone is begging you to keep playing.

BTS members RM and V released from army, tease reunion: 'We will return'

K-pop supergroup BTS members RM and V were discharged from the South Korean military on Tuesday, June 10, after mandatory service, as fans were counting down to the band's comeback with more members finishing their national duty later this month. Cheered by dozens of fans near the military base, the two members in their army uniforms saluted the crowd and said they will soon be returning to perform. "To all the ARMYs who have waited for us in the military, I want to say I am truly, truly grateful. Please wait just a little longer and we will return with a really cool performance," V said in front of fans and media. Known as ARMY, BTS has a global fan club with millions of loyal followers. Two other bandmates, Jin and J-Hope, were discharged from the military earlier and have been performing solo and appearing on variety shows. BTS members RM and V begin mandatory military duty in South Korea as band aims for 2025 reunion Jimin, Jung Kook and Suga are set to wrap their military service as late as June 21, media reports say. The globally recognised K-pop icon BTS has not released a group project since 2022 and its members are hoping for the reunion. "After pursuing our own little ventures, we are now coming back together, and I love that for us," J-Hope told a magazine in December. BTS' Jin celebrates with bandmates after completing military service Entertainment group HYBE, which manages BTS, is planning a huge event called BTS FESTA this week for fans to celebrate the band's 12th anniversary. It is not clear whether the members will show up, but Jin attended last year. Shares in HYBE rose 2.3% as of 0211 GMT, hitting their highest point in more than three years. Holding a flower bouquet for their discharge from the army, RM said he wanted to perform the most. "(Members) would feel the same, but stage performance, I want to perform the most. I'll work hard to make an album soon and come back to the stage," RM said, after playing the sax for the crowd. Groupies from around the world flew in to South Korea to celebrate the return of their "life-changing" stars. "It is just absolutely joyful. That is now four out, two again tomorrow and then Suga. Then we have OT7, we have seven kings back with us," said Philip Darbyshire, a 72-year-old Australian fan, referring to the band's seven members. "It is just wonderful."
