SOCOE leads industry support for rural STEM drive in Baram
KUCHING (July 20): Sarawak-based technology firm SOCOE Holdings Sdn Bhd shows support for the state's rural Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) movement by serving as the lead industry partner for the 'STEM Catalysts & Jubilee Joy: A Celebration of Innovation and Heritage' programme, held on July 16 at SMK Long Lama in Baram.
The event drew over 700 participants from the host and nearby schools, including SMK Tinjar, SJKC Kee Tee, SK Ubong Imang, SK Long Lapok, and SK Sungai Bain.
The initiative is part of the broader 'STEM Catalysts Raspberry Pi 2025' programme – a travelling STEM carnival spearheaded by the State Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), targeting more than 6,000 Primary 5 and 6 pupils from over 130 rural schools across Sarawak.
It is jointly implemented by Sarawak Skills and the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).
'Sarawak's future depends on how well we prepare our children today,' said State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who officiated the event.
'This programme plants the seeds of innovation, creativity, and critical thinking among our young minds, particularly in rural areas.'
A highlight of the event was a showcase on digital technologies contributing to Sarawak's hydrogen economy aspirations.
Students were introduced to the principles of electrolysis, fuel cell operation, ammonia production, and how sensors, actuators, and robotics are integrated to manage these processes.
'SOCOE is proud to support the STEM Catalysts Raspberry Pi 2025 programme through our corporate social responsibility arm, SOCOE Kasih,' said a SOCOE spokesperson.
'Empowering young talents in Sarawak communities, whether urban or rural, through science and technology is crucial for the region's long-term sustainable growth.'
SOCOE aims to nurture local talents, build critical future-ready skills, and support a generation of innovators, noting that when rural youth are equipped with the right tools, they not only adapt to the future but also help shape it.

GE Vernova to buy France's Alteia for enhancing AI tools for utilities
(Reuters) -Power equipment maker GE Vernova will buy France-based Alteia, which makes artificial intelligence-based tools that allow utility companies to review their grids, it said on Monday. GE Vernova already offers Alteia's software to customers through its GridOS Visual Intelligence. The tool helps utilities assess damage and inspect assets along thousands of miles of electrical lines. The acquisition will enhance this system through visual and operational data, allowing the companies to "see and sense" the grid, GE Vernova said. The company did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, which is expected to close on August 1. GE Vernova has highlighted that growth in its electrification software segment — which includes the GridOS system — could rapidly accelerate, RBC Capital Markets analyst Christopher Dendrinos said. The segment has been growing at mid-single digit percentage rates in the past couple of years, he said. Surging power demand from data centers used for AI and cryptocurrency technologies has boosted GE Vernova, which was spun off from General Electric last year. The power demand is expected to hit an all-time high this year. The company is expected to release its second-quarter earnings report on July 23 before the bell. Figma aims at $13.7 billion valuation as tech IPOs bounce back

The San Francisco-based company, along with some investors, is eyeing proceeds of up to $1.03 billion through a sale of nearly 37 million shares priced between $25 and $28 each, it said on Monday. The listing could be a major milestone for Figma, coming more than a year after its $20 billion sale to Adobe was terminated due to regulatory hurdles in Europe and the UK. While investors have been eager for new share sales for months, the uncertainty sparked by President Donald Trump's tariffs kept a major recovery in check. However, an equities rally and a bunch of strong debuts recently are helping lift the overhang. Figma will start trading close on the heels of stablecoin giant Circle, which debuted with eye-popping gains last month and has continued surging since. As a major technology player that appears supportive of bitcoin, Figma has already draw attention on social media discussion. The company had around $70 million invested in Bitwise's bitcoin exchange-traded fund as of March 31 and intends to allocate a further $30 million to bitcoin, its filing showed. Figma is a cloud-based design platform that allows users to collaboratively create and edit apps, websites and software interfaces. Its customers include ServiceNow, Workday and SAP. Its revenue rose 46% in the first three months of 2025, while net income jumped three-fold. "Figma's product is its primary marketing engine. Its collaborative nature fosters viral, bottoms-up adoption, leading to a best-in-class sales efficiency," said Tomasz Tunguz, founder of venture capital firm Theory Ventures. The company has also signaled it may take "big swings" with M&A, with co-founder and CEO Dylan Field saying it is prepared to "make decisions that may not seem immediately rational." Figma expects to list on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "FIG". Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Allen & Co and J.P. Morgan are among the underwriters for the offering. Alaska Airlines grounds all flights after IT outage disrupts systems

"At approximately 8 p.m. Pacific on Sunday (0300 GMT on Monday), Alaska Airlines experienced an IT outage that's impacting our operations. We requested a temporary, system-wide ground stop for Alaska and Horizon Air flights," Alaska said in an emailed statement to Reuters on Sunday evening. The Seattle-based airline said there would be residual impacts to its operations throughout the evening, without providing more details. The FAA did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment outside regular business hours. The FAA status page showed all destinations affected by the ground stop of Alaska's mainline aircraft, and the suspension of Horizon's operations. In April 2024, Alaska grounded its entire fleet due to an issue with the system that calculates the weight and balance of its planes, just a few months after a door panel on an Alaska Airlines-operated Boeing 737 MAX 9 jet blew off midair. Alaska Air Group maintains an operational fleet of 238 Boeing 737 aircraft, and 87 Embraer 175 aircraft, according to its website. In June, Alaska Air Group-owned Hawaiian Airlines said some of its IT systems were disrupted by a hack. Alaska Air Group said it was still determining the financial impact of that event. The news of Alaska's IT issues comes at a time when tech companies Google and Palo Alto Networks have warned of the "Scattered Spider" hacking group's interest in the aviation sector. Canada's WestJet Airlines was struck by an unspecified cyber incident in June, while Australia's Qantas experienced a data breach in July where a cyber hacker accessed the personal information of millions of customers. It remains unclear whether Alaska's outage is related to Microsoft stating on Sunday that there were "active attacks" on its server software used by government agencies and businesses. Alaska did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment on whether the outage was related to the Microsoft announcement.
