Champaign Co. Sheriff increasing patrols to reduce speeding, improve road safety
Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said in a news release that more than 200 local law enforcement agencies — along with the Illinois State Police — will increase patrols for speeding and other traffic violations throughout the month of July.

'Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in careless and risky driving,' Heuerman said in the release. 'No matter how safe of a driver you think you may be, speeding is dangerous and reduces your time to react if something unexpected happens. Speed limits aren't a suggestion; they are the law.'
In the past seven months, the Sheriff's Office investigated 173 crashes — 51 of those crashes involved injuries. Heuerman added that five people died in three different fatal crashes.

During the speed limit enforcement campaign, Heuerman said there is an easy way to avoid a ticket: drive the speed limit. In urban areas without a posted speed limit, drivers should not drive over 30 mph; in a rural area, the speed limit is 55 mph.
The patrols will increase in Champaign County — and the state — from July 8 to July 31. The enforcement effort is a part of the 'Speeding Catches Up with You' campaign and supports IDOT's 'It's Not a Game' media campaign.

Man charged in 2024 road rage shooting on Eisenhower Expressway near Elmhurst, Illinois
A Chicago man has been charged in a road rage shooting on the Eisenhower Expressway in DuPage County on the day before Thanksgiving last year. Juan Terrazas, 27, has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm. Illinois State Police said, around 6:45 a.m. on Nov. 27, 2024, Terrazas shot at another driver's vehicle on Interstate 290 near Lake Street in Elmhurst during a road rage incident. The other driver was not injured, but their vehicle was damaged in the shooting. Following an investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Terrazas, and he was taken into custody on Wednesday. Terrazas is being held at the DuPage County Jail as he awaits his first court appearance.

Northbound Edens Expressway closed in Northbrook, Illinois, after 5-vehicle crash
The northbound lanes of the Edens Expressway have been shut down in Northbrook, Illinois, after at least five vehicles were involved in a crash late Wednesday morning. Illinois State Police said, around 10:40 a.m., troopers responded to a crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Dundee Road involving five vehicles. All northbound lanes were closed after the crash. There was no immediate word on injuries or the cause of the crash. The southbound lanes of the Edens Expressway were closed for several hours on July 8 after a 60-year-old man was killed in a three-car crash in the same location.

Two killed in expressway crashes near Northbrook, Glencoe
Crashes on the I-94 expressway in the northern Chicago suburbs claimed two lives during and just after the July Fourth weekend, per Illinois State Police. The first fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday, at about 2:52 a.m., in the northbound lanes of I-94 near Tower Road near Glencoe, according to Trooper Jason Wilson, a public relations officer for the state police. Troopers responded after getting a report of a four-vehicle personal injury crash involving a red Pontiac, black Hyundai, white Jeep, and a gray Tesla, he said, adding that at least one female passenger was taken to a local hospital with injuries. Alejandro Hernandez, 32, of Chicago, was also taken from the scene, with injuries, to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Wilson said. Multiple lanes were closed for the crash investigation, he said, and all lanes were reopened at 9:08 a.m. The crash remains under investigation, he added. On Monday, July 7, the southbound lanes of I-94 were shut down for about four hours after Illinois State Police responded at about 12:30 p.m. to a crash in the southbound lanes near milepost 40, which is near Dundee Road and Route 41 in Northbrook, per Trooper Caleb Billingsley, a state police public information officer. One occupant of a vehicle was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, he said. At approximately 1:27 p.m., law enforcement closed the southbound lanes for the investigation and traffic was diverted to I-294, Billingsley said. All lanes were reopened at approximately 5:41 p.m. The state police are continuing their investigation, he said Tuesday morning.
