RLJE Films has released the trailer for Descendent , a cerebral looking indie sci-fi thriller that marks the feature directorial debut of Peter Cilella.
The story centers on a haunted Los Angeles school security guard named Sean Bruner (played by The Walking Dead 's Ross Marquand), who begins experiencing unsettling visions after a strange beam of light appears in the night sky.
As he prepares for the birth of his first child with his wife Andrea (Sarah Bolger), Sean's mind begins to fracture, and reality starts slipping through his fingers.
The synopsis reads: 'Set in Los Angeles, Descendent follows Sean Bruner (Ross Marquand), a school security guard haunted by childhood trauma while preparing for the birth of his first child with his wife, Andrea.
'After a beam of light appears in the sky during a late-night shift, Sean wakes up in the hospital with an inexplicable talent for vivid, unsettling drawings of extraterrestrials and desert landscapes.
'As his eerie visions blur the line between dreams and reality, Sean's grip on sanity unravels. With time running out, he must confront his fears to escape his family's tragic legacy.'
There's a clear Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe running through the trailer, from distorted faces to creeping paranoia.
The film made its premiere earlier this year at SXSW 2025 and is heading to theaters on August 8, 2025, followed by a VOD release on August 15th.

Cecile Dionne, Who Found Fame and Despair as a Quintuplet, Dies at 91

Cecile Dionne, who with her siblings found fame as the first quintuplets known to have survived infancy and who, of the five, was the most outspoken about the suffocating effects of celebrity, died on Monday in Montreal. She was 91. A family spokesman, Carlo Tarini, announced the death, in a hospital, on Thursday night. The Dionne sisters' birth and survival in rural Ontario may have been miraculous and a balm to a beleaguered public shuffling through the depths of the Depression, but her life was miserable. 'I resented everyone for the way we were brought up,' she said in an interview on her 50th birthday. 'Because of the accident of birth, we were not considered people.' She and her sisters, only one of whom survives her, weighed a combined 13½ pounds when they were born at home shortly after dawn on May 10, 1934, to a struggling and already large farm family in Corbeil, about 215 miles north of Toronto. Within hours, The North Bay Nugget, a local newspaper, wired the news of their arrival around the world, and the Chicago World's Fair offered their father a contract to display them. The quints became more famous than Shirley Temple, a bigger tourist attraction than Niagara Falls and irresistible prey for the greedy. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Musikfest 2025 begins in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, despite stormy weather

Despite the stormy weather, Musikfest kicked off Thursday night in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Organizers moved some of the shows inside, but as they say, the show goes on. With the Bethlehem SteelStacks as the backdrop, the 42nd annual Musikfest drew in fans for the beloved summer tradition, featuring live music, food, merchandise and more. "The economic impact annually is about $75 million from this festival alone over 10 days," said Curt Mosel, the COO of Arts Quest, the nonprofit that hosts the festival. "Our goal and where we were founded was bringing a festival to Bethlehem proper ... it was done on Main Street, it was done within the heart of the city to help small businesses after Bethlehem Steel had laid off 6,000 workers back in 1983," Mosel said. More than 1.2 million people are expected to take in more than 500 performances on 16 different stages. For local businesses like Island Noodles, this event alone generates 15% of their yearly sales. "Musikfest is basically our Super Bowl," Boris Scheider, the owner of Island Noodles, said. "We wait for it, it comes and here we are." Musikfest runs through Sunday, Aug. 10, and includes headliners like Third Eye Blind, Nelly, Darius Rucker, Chicago and Thursday's featured artist Megan Moroney. Emma Nasados and her friends came in from Schuylkill County with her friends for the ticketed country concert. "I have never been here before," Nasados said. "All the food trucks and the concerts, I really never knew that there were all these concerts here that they have every year." And while Nasados is a Musikfest rookie, Rich McIntyre is a seasoned veteran. "I have been coming here since the beginning, the first year it was here," McIntyre said. For him, this marks a coming together that's part of his roots, and one he's already marking on his calendar for next year. "This is tradition," McIntyre said.
