Vidasam demands recovery of ‘freehold land' from land grabbers and its return to Dalits

The Hindu14 hours ago
The 6 lakh acres of land in Visakhapatnam district, which was declared freehold in violation of G.O. No. 596, should be acquired and returned to the STs, and the reports of the two Special Investigation Teams (SITs), formed during the TDP and YSRCP governments, should be made public, demanded Vistrutha Dalita Sanghala Aikya Vedika (Vidasam) State convener Busi Venkata Rao.
A protest was organised by Dalit organisations at the Gandhi statue, near GVMC, on Monday (July 07). Addressing the gathering, Mr. Venkata Rao alleged that some political leaders had grabbed around 6 lakh acres of assigned lands in the district, by taking undue advantage of G.O. issued by the previous government on assigned lands. This was confirmed by the Cabinet Sub Committee. He warned that the kingpins behind the assigned land scam were trying to join the present coalition government and trying to influence the government to legalise the lands grabbed by them.
He alleged that the land grabbers had got their names included after removing the names of the original landholders and converting the land into 'freehold'. He alleged that some influential persons in the present government were advising that only registration fee should be collected from the 'land grabbers'. He demanded that the government should acquire the freehold lands and reallocate them to the Dalits. He also sought amendment of the G.O. to ensure that purchase and sale of these lands should be allowed only between those belonging to one community.
Dalit leader Omkar, who presided over the meeting, criticised the coalition government for failing to initiate any action on the police officials, who had beaten three youths with lathis on the road, in full public view.
Another leader T. Srirama Murthy alleged that not even a case was filed by the police when a Dalit area was ostracised by the villagers in Mallam village in Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's constituency. Dalit leaders K. Chinna Rao, Thantadi Kiran Kumar, Kothapalli Venkata Ramana, Bagam Gopala, Maturu Srinivasa Rao, Sodadasi Sudhakar and D. Nirmala were among those who participated.

Maya urges EC for fair Bihar polls

1 2 Lucknow: BSP president Mayawati on Monday said the murder of Gopal Khemka, a prominent industrialist and BJP leader, in Patna, has heated up the politics of Bihar "in a new way" and the election commission must take steps to ensure peaceful elections in the state. She also reiterated that BSP will contest the upcoming Bihar elections solo. In her tweet on X, she said, "Although in Bihar, cases of atrocities, murders, and caste-based exploitation, especially against Dalits, backward classes, exploited, poor, and their women, and depriving people of these classes of their rights have always been a topic of discussion, the recent murder of Gopal Khemka has heated up the politics of the state in a new way along with the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. If the EC takes cognizance of this bloodshed and initiates appropriate action right now, it will be better for conducting peaceful elections in the state." She said: "During the special intensive revision of the voters' list in Bihar before the elections, all these violent incidents are being done by whom and for who's selfish interests? Not only is the coalition govt of the state in the dock regarding this, but the politics has also become quite volatile. It remains to be seen what effect it will have on political equations and elections in the state." She further said that BSP is a party of Bahujans, especially Dalits, other backward classes, deprived, exploited, poor and labourers and is fighting Bihar elections on its own under the principle and policy of depending on the physical and financial strength of its cadres and well-wishers. "That is why an appeal is made to the EC that whatever strict steps are needed to free Bihar elections from misuse of govt machinery as well as muscle, money, and criminal power should be taken in time so that the poll campaign proves to be free and fair," she said.

Rahul Gandhi questions govt silence on ‘manipulation' by Jane Street

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the Central government of making the rich richer and pushing ordinary investors to the brink of ruin by being silent on 'manipulation' by big players in the futures and options (F&O) market. Gandhi said he had predicted the loopholes in the F&O market. 'I clearly said in 2024 — the F&O market has become a playground for 'big players', and small investors' pockets are continuously being drained,' he said. 'Now SEBI itself is admitting that Jane Street manipulated thousands of crores. Why did SEBI remain silent for so long? At whose behest was the Modi government sitting with its eyes closed? And how many more big sharks are still shorting retail investors? In every case, it's clear — the Modi government is making the rich richer and pushing ordinary investors to the brink of ruin,' Gandhi said in a post on X. He tagged a September 24, 2024 post in which he had said: 'Uncontrolled F&O trading has grown 45x in 5 years. 90% of small investors have lost Rs 1.8 lakh crore in three years.' 'SEBI must reveal the names of the so-called 'Big Players' making a killing at their expense,' he said. Reacting to Gandhi's post, the BJP accused the Congress MP of 'peddling fear and misinformation' about the stock market. BJP IT department head Amit Malviya said the very action of SEBI banning a global entity, 'which Gandhi is trying to sensationalise', is clear evidence that strong regulatory action is being taken to protect small investors. If SEBI were silent, as Gandhi claims, then there would be no investigation, no ban, and no headline; his entire allegation collapses right there, Malviya said. Congress media and publicity chief Pawan Khera alleged corruption in the market and said SEBI has to answer a lot of questions. On Thursday, SEBI ordered the impounding of `4,843.57 crore in alleged unlawful gains made by Jane Street through manipulative trading. The market regulator also prohibited the firm from engaging in any securities transactions until the recovery of the alleged illegal gains is completed.

Police recover missing girl who alleges woman pushed her into flesh trade

Kaithal, July 7 (UNI) Shocking revelations have surfaced in the case of a woman who alleged she was tortured by police at Siwan police station during interrogation related to a missing girl. The police have recovered the missing girl, who has accused the woman of pushing her into having physical relations with five persons. The girl's family has demanded strict action against the woman. At the same time, the allegations of the woman being beaten by the police have been described as false. The matter was as follows: On June 29, a complaint was lodged at Siwan police station in which it was stated that a girl has gone missing from her house. The family accused a woman of their neighborhood of being behind the disappearance of the girl. A panchayat was called in the Siwan police station in this case and the police questioned the woman. The following day the woman's family claimed that three male and a female police personnel locked the woman in a room in the police station and beat her up badly. The woman showed injuries to her person in a video on the basis of which Dalit organizations held protests against the police and demanded action against the guilty policemen. The police registered a separate FIR for a fair investigation in the case and entrusted the task of investigation to an SIT. Meanwhile, the police recovered the girl from near Rajaund village and counselled her. The girl revealed that the woman had entrapped her by promising her marriage and forced her to strike physical relations with many men. The girl's brother said "the woman took my sister along with her and she was raped by many men". The girl's father also made serious allegations against the woman. He said "the woman took away my daughter and misled social organizations and urged them to hold a protest against the police". He said that the woman's bruises had been given by her husband and family, not the police. DSP Lalit Kumar said the statements of the girl have been recorded, in which she has made serious allegations against the woman. A separate FIR has been registered to investigate the allegations of beating against the police by the woman, which is being investigated fairly. The girl's family has demanded immediate arrest and strict action against the woman. The father of the girl said that "this woman can also push other girls into the wrong business, it is necessary to secure other girls of the society by punishing her". The family asked the social organizations protesting in support of the woman that they should have first spoken to them to know the truth of the whole matter. Now preparations are being made to take action against the woman on the basis of the statements of the girl and investigation into the alleged beating by the police is also going on. The family has warned that if the woman is not arrested soon, they will be forced to protest on the streets and demonstrate. UNI XC RN
