'There was nothing up here': Radio 6 stars praise GM's turn into media hub

Yahoo29-03-2025
Two northern-born stars of BBC Radio 6 have praised Salford's transformation into a media hub.
Veteran DJ Mark Radcliffe, from Bolton, said that when he started his show with Marc Riley was the only national radio show outside of London.
Mark said: "To see what's happened and what's grown on the banks of the ship canal is amazing to us, because in our lifetimes the media map has changed completely."
Speaking at the Victoria Warehouse near Media City, he was joined by Stuart Maconie, the BBC veteran from Wigan.
Stuart said: "When I was a teenager, you would not have come round here.
"It was a wasteland."
The pair co-host BBC Radio 6's Weekend Breakfast Show.
Manchester and Salford are currently playing host to the station's annual festival which has seen performances from the likes of Ezra Collective and Mogwai.
Stuart said the highlight of his festival was the set by fellow Radio 6 DJ Jamz Supernova, who performed before Fat Dog and Ezra Collective on Thursday night.
Stuart said: 'It was brilliant at seven o'clock last night.
'You wouldn't have thought people would be up for it, but they really were.
'She got people really going. It was a brilliant mix of, like, Brazilian music, African music, techno music.
'It was just really, really great.'
The BBC Radio 6 Festival started off rotating between different UK cities, but since 2023 has found a permanent home in Salford.
6 Music is the UK's biggest digital-only radio station with a reach of 2.7 million listeners.
Mark said: "I think Radio 6 is almost like a throwback to old stations, not in the programmes it does or the music it plays, but in the audience's connection to it."
Stuart said: "I think they're very loyal in the fact that they'll listen all day, people will say to me, I put it on in the morning and listen to it all day."
Mark said: "I put it on all day and all night, I haven't slept in three years!"
The duo were in agreement that the station's success was down to its offering of something different from the mainstream.
Mark said: "I think the key to its success is that it's an alternative to pop stations.
"Back in the old days, Radio One was the station people would listen to when they were going out, Radio Two feels a bit middle of the road to me.
"The idea is that as you get older, you would still be open to all different kinds of new music.
"They used to call it celebrating the alternative.
"I think there's still something of that, but there is still stuff that's by big, big bands.
"It's not a kind of niche or minority thing, but just music that's not quite of the mainstream."
In January, Nick Grimshaw joined the station, taking over the breakfast show from Lauren Laverne.
Mark said: "Another big reason for its success is because all the people on the network are real music enthusiasts, and knowledgeable about music.
"But we're also aware that we're an entertainment station, it's not po-faced.

"You know, we have fun, we come on and have fun and we have our new boy Nick Grimshaw in the mornings.
"That's a fun listen. So you can hear great music there, but also entertainment.
"I think it's you take the music you play very seriously, but not yourselves too seriously."

'There are clear lines of musical continuity that come directly from African music into Jazz music,' he added. Gardner, who has arranged two of the pieces that will be performed, also has been the trombone instructor for the students at the Summer Jazz Academy; besides playing instruments, some of its students will also sing in the show. Tod Stoll, Jazz at Lincoln Center's vice president of education, said that the Summer Jazz Academy students, have been studying this summer both at Bard College and the Juilliard School, which like JALC, is part of Lincoln Center. He said they've been 'very busy—we want them to leave here tired and inspired.' Before the 2025-25 season begins in September, the Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra will perform in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. Jazz at Lincoln Center said its 38th season, 'Mother Africa,' will delve 'into the creative spirit that unites African and American musical traditions, and runs from September 18, 2025 to June 20, 2026. Dominating the season are concerts that explore the deep and enduring ties between jazz, the African continent, and its diaspora. The 2024-25 season includes 19 unique weekends of Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts in the 1233-seat Rose Theater, nine concerts in the 467-seat Appel Room, and more than 350 nights of music at Dizzy's Club, in addition to webcast performances and in-person and virtual education programs. 'The season also highlights new works, commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center, from renowned jazz artists in the organization's new The Commission Series . The new season also includes celebratory concerts to honor the centennials of three towering figures in jazz – Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, and Celia Cruz – further illuminating the far-reaching legacy of Afro-American and the African diaspora musical expression,' it concluded.

‘Invincible' Season 4 Is Bringing in Matthew Rhys for a Major Role

Congo lining up off of Prime Video's announcement that Invincible will have its fifth season queued up while its fourth season is waiting in the wings, Skybound Entertainment announced new casting for the adult animated series that'll play a major role in its upcoming season at San Diego Comic-Con. During Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman's panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that actor Matthew Rhys (The Americans) will play the role of Dinosaurus. To all the folks who didn't have the privilege of being in attendance at SDCC to witness the announcement firsthand, the official Invincible X/Twitter account had folks covered with a post showcasing what the character looks like… like a red dinosaur. Admincible can now confirm Matthew Rhys is voicing Dinosaurus!!! And here's a first look at the character design. Source: trust me bro. Actual source: @RobertKirkman's SDCC panel happening now. — INVINCIBLE (@InvincibleHQ) July 24, 2025While that sounds like the kind of throwaway villain-of-the-week kind of fodder for Mark Grayson and crew to make short work of in the opening moments of an episode, Dinosaurus plays a pretty crucial role in the comics and thus, in the animated show, as the next major hurdle for Mark to overcome in his coming-of-age superhero mentioned earlier, Dinosaurus isn't just a mindless brute; he's a highly intelligent dinosaur person who quickly befriends Mark. Debuting in issue 68 of the comics, Dinosaurus is as close an analogue to Spider-Man's Lizard character as Invincible characters come. Dinosaurus is a split personality of a human scientist named David Anders. Contrary to rogues like Dr. Seismic, who justify their villainy as the end justifies the means, Anders' primary goal, at least initially, is to use his intelligence to support environmental conservation efforts, which helps him and Grayson become fast friends as he navigates his new role as a hero. What makes Dinosaurus' introduction into Invincible so novel is that it occurs after his previous partnership with Cecil had been irreparably damaged due to their differing ideals about how far one should go in defending humanity. Dinosaurus becomes Mark's closest ally as the looming Vilrumite war grows ever closer. But, as all things Invincible tend to go, Dinosaurus quickly becomes his newest antagonist, putting Mark in yet another moral quandary for the type of hero he wants to be. We'll spare you the meaty details for Dinosaurus' heel turn. Still, as far as Invincible allies turned antagonists go, Dinosaurus is one of, if not the most interesting, characters in the series that forces Mark to confront the gray that exists to be a hero. Hopefully, Rhys' acting chops will enrich the fan-favorite comic book character and ground Invincible's already inspired adaptation writing to new heights when he's introduced properly to the Prime Video series. Invincible Season 4 is in production. Want more io9 news? Gisele Bündchen shares rare glimpse of new baby boy during intimate birthday celebration

Gisele Bündchen celebrated her 45th birthday with the ones she loves the most. The supermodel offered a glimpse of life lately on social media, and included photos of her rarely seen baby boy. Bündchen gave birth to her third child earlier this year, and her first baby with jiu-jitsu instructor boyfriend Joaquim Valente. "Haven't been around here much, but I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all the warm birthday wishes," the former Victoria's Secret stunner captioned a carousel of images. "I'm so grateful for another trip around the sun and even more grateful to have spent it in nature, surrounded by love and my family." The Brazilian-born beauty and her twin sister, Patricia, showed off matching birthday cakes in one image, and a handful of desserts from a gorgeous tablescape. Bündchen carried her five-month-old in a baby carrier while hiking with her family, and positioned a white heart over her son's face for a photo with her father, Valdir. "Today is also my mom's birthday," she added online. "We miss her deeply, but we know she's always with us. I continue to trust and welcome life with an open heart, holding gratitude for all that is still to come. Sending love to everyone." Gisele's mother, Vania Maria Nonnenmacher Bündchen, died from complications due to cancer in January 2024. She was 75. Gisele is one of six children, including twin Patricia, and sisters Rafaela, Graziela, Gabriela and Raquel. Following her death, Gisele wrote about the grief surrounding the loss of her mother. "It hurts to know that I won't be able to hug you anymore, but I know that you will always be watching over us," Bündchen wrote in the caption. "You were an angel on earth, always helping everyone around you. I am so grateful to be your daughter and to have learned from you. Thank you for being the best role model of love, strength, compassion, courage, and grace." "I will forever cherish the beautiful memories we shared and will live by the values you taught me," she added. "You will live forever through the many lives that you touched. Thank you for giving me five best friends for life. Your love will always guide us. I will see you in my dreams." News of Bündchen's third pregnancy broke in October 2024. She shares the new baby with her boyfriend, Valente, who she began dating in June 2023, around seven months after her divorce from Brady was finalized. "Gisele and Joaquim are happy for this new chapter in their life and they're looking forward to creating a peaceful and loving environment for the whole family," a source told People magazine in a statement. After confirming their romance, rumors swirled online that Bundchen and Valente had an affair. The model spoke with The New York Times in March 2024, saying: "That is a lie." Bündchen and her ex-husband, Tom Brady, officially announced their divorce in separate Instagram posts in October 2022. The former couple was married for 13 years and share son Benjamin Rein, and daughter Vivian Lake. Brady also shares son Jack with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.
