'He loved diving': Father mourns son's death in Aceh accident

KUALA LUMPUR: The father of Haikal Rafie Halim, who died in a diving accident off the coast of Iboih in Kota Sabang, Aceh, Indonesia, yesterday, said his son had always been passionate about the activity and never imagined it would one day cost him his life.
Haikal's father, Halim Abu Hassan, said his son loved diving and had explored many locations with his friends and wife.
"However, we never expected that this time it would end in tragedy," he said when contacted.
Halim said his 33-year-old son had travelled to Aceh last Thursday with his wife and a group of 10 friends, and had sent a photo from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport before departing.
"They also called my wife, and we had the chance to exchange well wishes before they arrived.
"Once they reached Aceh, my daughter-in-law sent us photos and made a video call from the chalet. But my son was mostly quiet during the call, and it was my daughter-in-law who chatted with us at length."
He added that his son had often gone diving at locations including Pulau Tioman, Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian, and several other places.
"I only found out about the incident at around 1.30pm yesterday after one of his friends called to inform us.
"As for what exactly happened, I'm still unsure. My daughter-in-law is still too shaken to speak about it," he said.
Halim said his son's remains will be brought home this evening and will be laid to rest at the Kampung Melayu Rasa Cemetery in Rasa, Hulu Selangor.
Haikal was reported to have died while diving off Iboih at around 9.30am local time, accompanied by two Malaysian friends and a diving instructor.
Indonesia's Berita Rakyat Aceh news portal reported that police responded promptly to the scene after receiving the report.
The report said that after 20 minutes of diving at a depth of 30 metres, the group was swept away by an underwater current.
Haikal reportedly attempted to ascend following the instructor's orders but lost consciousness upon reaching the surface.
Rescue efforts were immediately carried out, and the victim was rushed by speedboat to Iboih Beach.
His friends and the instructor administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before taking him by car to a nearby clinic.
Upon arriving at the clinic at around 10.30am local time, medical personnel provided immediate treatment, but Haikal was pronounced dead.

MOHE to continue monitoring Malaysian students in Iran, says Zambry

JELI: The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) will continue to monitor the five Malaysian students in Iran who have chosen to remain there to pursue their studies, said Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir. "The government has offered support and expressed its willingness to help them return if they choose to. "We will continue to monitor their situation closely, wherever they are, to ensure their safety," he told reporters after launching the Jeli Umno division delegates' meeting at Bukit Nangka today. Previously, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed that only five Malaysians remain in Iran by personal choice. All five had signed letters of undertaking to stay in the country, despite the government's earlier advisory urging Malaysians to leave amid escalating tensions. On June 23, a total of 24 people arrived safely at Kuala Lumpur International Airport from Iran on Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. They comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens and one Singaporean national. Meanwhile, when asked about the latest on the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students injured in the June 9 crash, Zambry said all have since been discharged from hospital. "The last injured student was discharged on July 8 from Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu. "Three have since resumed their studies on campus, while the rest are attending classes online," he said. The tragic accident claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students when their chartered bus, en route from Jertih to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with a Perodua Alza MPV. Another 33 people were injured, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the MPV's driver and three passengers. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Local influencer Ah Ya has voiced concern on Instagram after learning that his elderly father was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle prohibited substances into Malaysia. Ah Ya, a Sino Kadazan who currently resides in Johor, said he only found out about the arrest two days ago, despite the incident reportedly occurring on July 8 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). In a video shared online, he revealed that his father, who is in his 70s, had travelled alone from Sabah to Brazil without informing the family. Upon returning to Malaysia, the man was detained by police at KLIA after authorities allegedly found illegal drugs in his possession. Describing his father as a simple and trusting person, Ah Ya said he suspects his father may have been tricked or used by others. He admitted he remains unsure about the full circumstances and has turned to the public for legal advice on how to support his father. The video has drawn over 10,000 likes and 300 comments, with many urging him to seek legal counsel and visit his father to better understand the case. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? #SHOWBIZ: Awie to Amy Search: 'Take responsibility, tell the truth'

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian rock icon Datuk Awie has urged Datuk Amy of Search to step forward and provide a truthful explanation regarding an issue currently being hotly debated by netizens, which has also implicated him. In a post on his Facebook page, the 57-year-old vocalist of the band Wings, whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Othman, said that Amy's explanation was crucial to clear his name. He added that he was weary of continually explaining himself, especially as several netizens on social media had mentioned his name. "Amy Search, tell the truth. Stop all these foolish people from accusing me. Take responsibility for this; tell the truth. "I'm tired of having to read and answer for what you've done," he wrote. However, Awie did not elaborate on the specific issue his name was associated with. Earlier, the police confirmed receiving a report from singer Shila Amzah, who claimed she was publicly insulted by a legendary artiste during a concert rehearsal on Thursday. In a Harian Metro report today, Kuala Lumpur Deputy Police Chief, Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, confirmed that a report was made by Shila, whose real name is Nurshahila Amir Amzah, on July 10, at 5.31pm at the Dang Wangi Police Station. Awie, Amy and Shila had performed together at the MR. D.I.Y 20th Anniversary concert, held at Stadium Merdeka, here, last night. Awie's direct appeal to Amy now puts the onus on the 'Isabella' singer to shed light on the unfolding drama.
