Bhupesh Baghel's son sent to judicial custody till August 4 in liquor scam

Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, was sent to judicial custody till August 4 by a special PMLA court in Raipur on Tuesday in connection with the alleged multi-crore liquor scam.
He was produced before the court following the completion of his five-day custodial remand with the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Advocate Saurabh Pandey, representing the ED, said, "Chaitanya Baghel's custodial remand was ending today, so he was presented in front of the court today. As of now, he has been sent to judicial custody till August 4. In this money laundering case, if evidence is found against anyone else, they are summoned."
Chaitanya's counsel, Advocate Faizal Rizvi, opposed the ED's request for judicial custody, alleging procedural lapses and suppression of facts by the agency.
"His 5-day custodial remand ended today. ED has demanded 14-day judicial custody. We have raised an objection to it...We have said that ED has suppressed documents and has presented false things in their application...We have said that ED has made the arrest without letting us (Chaitanya Baghel) speak. This shows that the ED's action is biased and one-sided," Rizvi told reporters outside the court.
Chaitanya was brought to the court under tight security. Former CM Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring were present during the hearing.
The ED sought 14 days of judicial custody, citing Chaitanya's alleged involvement in financial irregularities and the investment of illicit funds.
Outside the court, Chhattisgarh BJP chief Kiran Singh Deo defended the ED's action and dismissed allegations of political vendetta.
"If his son has been found involved in some scams that have occurred over the past few years, then the investigative agencies will naturally perform their duty. If you want to commit scams and then want no one to raise objections against it, then that's not possible... Instead of politicising this issue, they should reflect on their actions that led to this," Deo said.
Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao also criticised the Congress party's state-wide economic blockade protesting the arrest, calling it a total failure.
"Congress party's economic blockade turned out to be a total flop. People of the state, trade organisations, labour organisations and everyone opposed it. Nobody supported the economic blockade," Sao said.
Referring to the ED's findings, Sao added, "ED has very clearly said that he invested Rs 16.70 Crores in his real estate company and was involved in a discrepancy of Rs 1000 Crores. Do not try to hide behind Adani when it comes to a corruption case. They did this economic blockade against the son's arrest. He has serious allegations by ED against him."
Chaitanya Baghel was arrested by the ED on July 18. The arrest followed a raid in March, during which the agency recovered Rs 30 lakh in cash from the residences of Bhupesh and Chaitanya Baghel.
The search operation, spanning 14 locations across Chhattisgarh, was part of an investigation into alleged irregularities in the state's liquor trade, including suspected illegal commissions and money laundering.
According to the ED, Chaitanya Baghel is a recipient of "proceeds of crime" in the alleged liquor scam, where around Rs 2,161 crore was siphoned off through various schemes.

Rahul Gandhi Questions PM Modi's Silence on Trump's Ceasefire Mediation Claims

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reluctance to directly challenge US President Donald Trump's claims regarding American mediation in the India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Gandhi suggested that Modi's silence on the matter stems from strategic constraints rather than diplomatic courtesy. The Congress leader argued that the Prime Minister cannot openly contradict Trump without risking potential revelations that could expose uncomfortable truths about the bilateral relationship. Gandhi explicitly connected Trump's persistent statements to ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and India. He characterized the American President's remarks as leveraging tactics designed to secure favorable terms in upcoming commercial discussions. The Congress leader predicted that continued pressure would ultimately result in a trade agreement that might compromise India's interests. The controversy centers on Trump's repeated assertions that Washington facilitated a "full and immediate" ceasefire between India and Pakistan through American diplomatic intervention. The US President has reiterated these claims approximately thirty times since the May 10 truce agreement, according to Congress estimates. India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding emerged through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations from both countries, explicitly rejecting any foreign mediation role. This official position contradicts Trump's public narrative about American involvement in the peace process. During Tuesday's parliamentary session, Gandhi challenged Modi to demonstrate courage comparable to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by openly declaring Trump's statements false. The Congress leader specifically dared Modi to state in Parliament that "Donald Trump is lying" about the mediation claims. In his subsequent parliamentary response, Modi asserted that no international leader had requested India to halt its military operations, though he notably avoided mentioning Trump by name. This omission has become a focal point for Opposition criticism. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera employed vivid imagery to characterize the relationship dynamics, suggesting Trump maintains controlling influence over Modi's diplomatic responses. The party has accused the Prime Minister of being in a compromised position with significant information to conceal.

EAM Jaishankar roasts Oppn over India's ‘new normal' policy

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday lashed out at the Opposition over feigning ignorance over the term 'India's new normal' and coined a new name 'Modi normal' to elucidate the new defining strategy of the country in responding to acts of terror and crushing terrorists as well as their masterminds, irrespective of their location. Joining the Operation Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said that some members raised hue and cry over the term 'new normal' and hence he was explaining India's new security doctrine via 'Modi normal' and 'Congress normal'. He said that the 'Modi normal' has clearly laid out guidelines and principles on matters of national security that remain steadfast and non-negotiable. 'Terrorists will not be treated as proxies, cross-border terror will get an appropriate response, talks and terror won't go together, we won't give into nuclear blackmailing, and blood and water won't flow together,' he told the House, outlining the redefined national strategy under the Modi government. Notably, the 'new normal' policy came into being after the Modi government gave full operational freedom to the forces during Operation Sindoor and stated that any act of terror on Indian soil will now be seen as an attack on India's sovereignty and therefore will be responded to by the armed forces in the strongest possible manner. EAM Jaishankar further said that India's Operation Sindoor did a global service by destroying hubs of global terror in Pakistan. 'Bahalwapur and Muridke remain the biggest centres of nurturing terrorists and spreading terrorism in India and abroad. Our forces reduced it to dust; they did a global service and are being suitably applauded by all,' he said. Lambasting the 'sceptical' Opposition, he said that there are ample examples of Pakistani military establishments facing the fury of Indian forces, but there are some who continue to undermine our security forces for certain political motives. The Minister said that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a candid confession about Indian military strikes pulverising its military installations, but this fails to convince those who continue to remain sceptical of the Army's accomplishments. 'Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif admitted that General Munir called him, saying that Indian ballistic missiles hit their Noor Khan air base and missiles like Brahmos targeted their provinces like Rawalpindi,' he said and lamented that the political parties back home are decrying the great achievements of the Indian Armed Forces for scoring political points.

Prakash Raj appears before ED in Hyderabad in online betting probe

Actor Prakash Raj on Wednesday appeared before the ED officials here for questioning in a money laundering case linked to illegal online betting and gambling by certain platforms. The actor, popular in Telugu, Kannada and other South Indian films, appeared before officials of the probe agency at its zonal office here. Raj, who was questioned for about four hours, said he did the assignment with the apps in 2016, but did not take any money for it on moral grounds. He also said he had discontinued promoting the apps. "I gave them information that I had not received any money (for the promotion). Because I did not want to take any money for that. They (ED officials) have taken all the details," he told reporters. Asked if the investigation is politically motivated, he replied in the negative. "Officers are doing their job. As a citizen, I am supposed to cooperate and answer their questions. There is no witch-hunting or political motivation in this," he said. Raj added that he has not been asked to appear again for questioning. Besides Raj, the ED had also summoned actors Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda and Lakshmi Manchu for questioning in the case. The agency asked Daggubati (40) to appear before the zonal office here on July 23, Raj (60) on July 30, Deverakonda (36) on August 6 and Lakshmi (47) on August 13. The actors had "endorsed" online betting apps allegedly involved in generating "illicit" funds, official sources had said. However, the ED gave a fresh date of August 11 to actor Daggubati after he failed to appear on July 23, seeking deferment of the summons. The ED had taken cognisance of as many as five state police FIRs to register its case against these actors and a number of other celebrities and social media influencers. These individuals are suspected to have "endorsed" online betting apps like Junglee Rummy, JeetWin, Lotus365, etc, for celebrity or endorsement fee, ED sources had said. These platforms are alleged to have generated "illicit" funds, through illegal betting and gambling, worth crores of rupees, the sources had said. Some of these "well-known" persons, the sources said, have earlier stated that they did not know the exact functioning of the apps and products dished out by them and claimed that they did not associate themselves with these platforms for any wrongdoing or illegal activity like betting.
