Airport operations 'back to normal' after Wipha wait

Thousands gathered at the airport on Monday morning to check in for flights after Typhoon Wipha led to the cancellation of 500 flights and another 400 being rescheduled.
A passenger, Wong, told RTHK that her flight to Yonago, Japan, was delayed for a day but that arrangements made by the airline were acceptable.
"I think the arrangements are pretty good, it's better for them to delay it rather than cancel. It's a bit annoying for us since we rented a car and we have to cancel our hotel booking for one night," she said.
"We had the same experience before: there was also a typhoon, and our flight was also delayed for a day.
"So this time, we thought we might just wait and see how it turns out, and it was fine at the end."
Another man, Cheung, echoed Wong's sentiments.
"The delay shortened our holiday for a day, but I think it's alright, we just have to change our itinerary for a bit," he said.
"I think the airline's arrangements were okay: they didn't need us to come to the airport and wait for days. I could just search for the flight information at home."
However, a Shanghai tourist, Bao, who was transferring to Sydney through Hong Kong, said arrangements were poor.
"It was horrible. I have been taking flights for over 20 years, and this time is the worst," he said.
"I got here from Shanghai after staff at Shanghai said the Hong Kong side would make arrangements as a result of our delayed flight.
"I arrived here at midnight, and I missed my connection.
"I can understand that it's because of the typhoon, but no one arranged anything for us afterwards.
"A staff member kept saying it's not their problem and that we had to deal with it ourselves.
"He didn't help us out with rescheduling, or booking a hotel, he just ran away."
The Airport Authority's executive director, Steven Yiu, said more than 1,000 flights would be scheduled for Monday and that operations remained smooth.
"We are still using the flight rescheduling control system, and the system will run until midnight today," he said.
"But the capacity of our runway and operations have returned to normal levels.
"We will slowly shut down our flight rescheduling control system. As for stranded passengers, it won't be zero, but the number is relatively low, as some flights only operate once or twice a week."
The authority said earlier that more than 230 flights departed and arrived between Sunday night and Monday morning after Typhoon Wipha moved away from the SAR.

After a record year which saw both park attendance and revenue soar to new highs, the resort is looking to lure more visitors by building two more attractions and rolling out discount bundle packages. Disneyland revealed in its 2024 business review that it had repaid 40 percent of the term loans at the end of the fiscal year ending 28 September. In a media interview, managing director Michael Moriarty confirmed the rest will be settled within this year. "We're going to be debt-free and our cash balance is continuing to grow, which is going to afford us the opportunity to invest in new expansion through the joint venture, with no need for additional cash injections from either shareholder," he said, referring to the SAR government and the Walt Disney Company. "We're going to take a look at all of those things as we continue to grow and do it prudently and do it in a way that's going to provide consistent year-over-year growth." Meanwhile, two new projects have broken ground, marking the first time the resort is building a pair of attractions simultaneously since 2011. A Pixar Entertainment experience will open to the public first, followed by a Marvel-themed expansion. Moriarty described the expansions as "game-changers", but said he was not ready yet to reveal the launch date. "The Marvel expansion is going to be very, very exciting. The creative is almost complete and we are working with the studios at Marvel to make it even more special for Hong Kong," he said. Moriarty also said the park is hoping on ride on the success of Kai Tak Sports Park. Disneyland is partnering with travel companies to roll out packages for visitors to visit the theme park and attend upcoming concerts by South Korean pop star G-Dragon and girl group Blackpink. He said park attendance has been strong from fly-in markets such as South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, adding figures would be revealed later. Moriarty said another focus is the Greater Bay Area market, citing the multiple-entry permits for Shenzhen residents and the upcoming Southbound Travel Scheme for Guangdong motorists. "What is really happening is that Hong Kong and maybe an hour or two's drive is really becoming a larger living circle for the region," he said. "These parking spaces that are being proposed for Lantau are very interesting and a way of making it more friction-free for travellers to come to Hong Kong. We are actively working with the government on this project."

Educational tours have been hosted at the site in Wuxiang county in Shanxi, as this year marks the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist War. A former soldier from Wuxiang county who participated in the war of resistance, Li Jinshui, joined the Eighth Route Army at the age of 17 and participated in multiple battles. 'With my country being in trouble, I, as a person with conscience, had to step forward and save my country with guns,' he said. Li, 98, said he was seriously injured in a battle in 1944, with a bullet hitting him in the left leg, but that he continued to fight. 'I was discharged despite my wound not having fully recovered because we only had a small hospital and many injured soldiers,' he said. "The army needed people so I returned when my condition was stable." The former Eighth Route Army headquarters, from where oversight was cast over 135 battles during the war, has now been transformed into a memorial hall. The 'red tourism' site is expected to see more than 200,000 visitors per year. Researcher Guo Xiuxiang from a research institute of Communist Party history in Shanxi said the site is of high historical value. 'The site witnessed how Chinese soldiers and people fought against a siege and attack by the Japanese army,' she said. "It also witnessed how the Eighth Route Army engaged in guerrilla warfare against Japanese forces, and as such it has a very high historical value."

File photo: RTHK Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law says visitors to the upcoming Wine and Dine Festival in October can get a taste of the finer bottles that France's famed Bordeaux vineyards have to offer. In an interview with Sing Tao Daily published on Tuesday, she said the festival, which made its debut in the SAR in 2009, has now become a signature mega event. It has been scaled down since its return from the pandemic, but the hope for Law is for it to get back to being the place where wine merchants go to ply their trade. Also hoped for is a better balance between wine and food this year, with her finding that there were more stalls selling food last year. Visitors this year will be able to sample Bordeaux wines with the return of the grand tasting pavilion as, Law said, an industry group responsible for promoting the region's offerings globally had been invited, during her visit to France this month, to bring merchants to the SAR. A further proposal to the group is for it to set up an "Everyday Bordeaux" event so as to recommend the region's offerings that represent high value for money to visitors. Separately, Law said the SAR should not expect travellers to have the kind of high spending habits that the city is used to. Hong Kong needs repeat visitors, she added, and the city needs to leave a good impression on tourists, as well as make them feel like home. Additionally, Law said even though the SAR is co-hosting the National Games in November with Guangdong and Macau, it has to "think very carefully" about whether it should consider applying to stage the Olympic Games under a similar arrangement. The Olympics, she said, involves different regions globally and the situation is complicated. Any such application, she pointed out, needs to be in line with the nation's policies, and requires careful assessment of issues such as public finances and resources.
