Nicky Byrne needs VAR after Westlife lads try 'splitting the G'

Extra.ie16-07-2025
Three of the members of Westlife almost came to blows (not really) after they tried their hand at 'Splitting the G.'
For the uninitiated, fans of pints of plain have been trying to split the G — i.e. drink the first gulp of their pint in such a way that when it resettles, the G in the Guinness on the glass will be split in half.
While there's not really a prize involved outside of bragging rights and another pint, there is a sweet science to it, and more and more people are hopping on the challenge — including Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan and Kian Egan of Westlife after they filmed themselves attempting to split the G after a gig last week. @westlife No messing around when Nicky's playing 😂 Reckon you could take us on? #Westlife #GuinnessChallenge #SplitTheG #BTS ♬ original sound – Westlife
The lads showed up at Ed Sheeran's homecoming gig in Ipswich last week, and after headed to the pub backstage — with Nicky explaining that after such a mammoth gig, it was time for them to try and split the G.
After explaining the rules for their international fans, the trio had their swigs, and while Kian and Shane were just above the line, Nicky appeared to have it won — although there was a challenge from his bandmates.
Kian was insistent that Nicky was below the line, even going so far as to say he was 'perfect on one side but below on the other,' before Nicky joked that he needed to go to VAR; in this scenario being three lads at the table next to them. The lads gave Nicky the VAR decision, with Shane congratulating him; but their fans were divided if Nicky properly did it.
'Shane [thinking] 'it's easier to let Nicky win, it's fine,'' one person joked, while another was sure he got it — commenting 'he definitely did it!'
'Defo Nicky split the G,' another commented, while another added 'Kian's in denial!' Nicky emerged victorious, but not after a VAR challenge by Kian and Shane. Pic: Westlife/TikTok
The lads made a special guest appearance at Ed Sheeran's homecoming on Friday night, where the trio (minus Mark, who had a serious health battle last year) to perform Flying Without Wings — with Ed saying that he would pretend to be in Westlife when he was a kid.
'The reason I wrote Shape of You was that I wanted to go in the studio with one of the men that was behind Flying Without Wings [Steve Mac],' Ed wrote. 'One of my favourite songs of all time.'
'I used to pretend I was in @westlife when I was like 9. But tonight I got to actually be a member, playing with Steve and @beogamusic on stage for the homecoming shows at @ipswichtown. Just pure magic. Thank you for flying over lads, will never forget that moment x.'

Galway to host auditions for first Irish voice on Ring video doorbells

The doorbell service company is holding auditions across the country to find one Irish voice to record a set of audio messages to play across all Ring Video Doorbells in Ireland. The event will take place on level one of the Eyre Square Shopping Centre in Galway city on Saturday, August 9 from 10am until 7pm and Sunday, August 10 from 11am until 6.30pm. The audio messages – known as quick replies – will play when the owner cannot answer the door. Any visitors that ring the doorbell will hear a pre-selected greeting with the winner's voice and an option to leave a message. Entries will be judged by a panel - including radio and TV presenter Carl Mullan - who will help select Ireland's voice. It's the first time an Irish accent will be heard on Ring Video Doorbells. People in Ireland can audition to become the voice of the nation in several ways, including in-person auditions in Galway this weekend. Auditions are also open online in English and Irish, with other audition events planned across the country throughout August. Members of the public can share a video of their recorded audition on TikTok or Instagram by posting their clip with #RingsVoiceoftheNation and tagging @Ring alongside #RingsVoiceoftheNation. Irish people with a Ring device and Ring Protect subscription plan can enter by recording themselves filming their greeting on a Ring device, pressing the 'Share' button on the Ring app and choosing 'Share with Ring'. Panel judge Carl Mullan said: 'The Irish accent is renowned all over the world and I'm buzzing to launch Ring's Irish Voice of the Nation to bring our lovely accent to devices across the country. 'There's something enchanting and melodic about our accents and I can't wait to hear what the people of Ireland come up with for their auditions,' he added.

Funeral details released for young teacher who died weeks after wedding

Matthew Starkey spoke earlier this year about being diagnosed with a 'fast growing stage 4 spinal tumour' Matthew Starkey and and fiancée Carrie Fleming. Inset: Matthew had been sharing his workouts in hospital on TikTok. The funeral of a Belfast man who was battling a life-limiting illness will take place later this week, it has been confirmed. Matthew Starkey spoke earlier this year about being diagnosed with a 'fast growing stage 4 spinal tumour'. He shared that he had a lot to look forward to; a new teaching job, a new home, and an upcoming wedding. But he revealed that what started out as a seemingly innocuous football injury, had sent his life down a path he never could have imagined. At the time Matthew, who was a teacher at St Colman's Sixth Form College in Ballynahinch, was in hospital but said he was ready to throw everything back at life once he was released. He had hoped to take part in the Belfast Half Marathon in a wheelchair, raising funds for the Friends of the Cancer Centre. In June, Matthew tied the knot with his fiancée Carrie, describing it as: 'Marrying the woman of your dreams, surrounded by your nearest and dearest and overcoming some hurdles along the way. Pretty special day all round.' Matthew Starkey at his graduation with Carrie, mum Fiona and dad Frank On Monday, Matthew's family announced he had passed away surrounded by his loved ones at the Marie Curie Hospice. A funeral notice has said that Matthew will be reposing at his grandmother's house in the Four Winds from today. 'Visitors welcome Tuesday and Wednesday between 1.00pm - 4.00pm and 6.00pm -10.00pm,' the notice added. 'Funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday 7th August in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Knockbracken Drive, Carryduff at 10.30am followed by burial in Roselawn Cemetery.' Matthew Starkey The funeral notice is concluded with a quote from American disability rights activist Helen Keller. It reads: 'What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us.' Matthew's family paid tribute to 'the brave battle' he fought with 'continued courage, wit and unwavering strength and we will always be proud of his determination to inspire others.' 'We want to extend our thanks again to Marie Curie UK for their love, care and support to Matthew and family during this incredibly difficult time,' they added. Thousands of people reacted to the post and shared their own memories of and tributes to Matthew. The Belvedere Café Restaurant said Matthew joined the Belvedere team in July 2020. He worked through all the lockdowns and re-openings they had. A post added: 'His massive smile, sense of humour and wit kept us all going. We spent many a day working closely together, especially when we were serving takeaway only, and had so many long chats. 'Matthew loved cooking and food, so we had many great conversations. Anytime I wanted to try a new dish for our menu, I could always rely on Matthew to be the one to try it and give me his honest opinion. 'People may ask why the sock photo? For me, that just epitomises his sense of humour, and his bright and colourful outlook on life—which he always had. That particular morning we got him those socks, he put them on, and we took that photo. 'As a small team, we all enjoyed nights out together and had many heartfelt conversations and belly laughs on those nights. I am so grateful to have had them. 'Matthew, you battled your diagnosis with such dignity and courage. May you rest in peace.'
