Italy set sights on bigger goals in Norway showdown
The Italians lost their final Group B game to Spain but managed to go through in second place thanks to a 1-0 win over Belgium and a 1-1 draw with Portugal to set up a meeting with the Norwegians, who won Group A with three wins out of three.
"The fact that we qualified in the quarter-finals gave us a lot of positive energy, (but) we immediately got back to work and we are preparing the game as we have prepared the others, taking care of every detail," Italy forward Sofia Cantore told reporters on Monday.
"Once you reach a small goal like this, you think about doing your best to reach another, so let's say there is maximum concentration for the next game and, beyond tactics, I think we should put in everything we have in our hearts."
After making it to the last four in six of the first seven Women's Euro competitions, Italy have struggled to reach those heights since.
"They (Norway) are a great team, they have very important personalities, and it will be important to be perfect tactically and then to hurt them where they will give us the space to hurt them," Cantore said.
"We have already shown during the whole competition ... we have character as a team. It's important to show our character in these games, I think we have a lot of it and we'll show it," she added. REUTERS

Syria's Sharaa vows to protect Druze rights as ceasefire holds

REUTERS/Karam al-Masri DAMASCUS - Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa promised to protect the rights of Druze citizens on Thursday as a ceasefire appeared to be holding in the country's south following U.S. intervention to end fighting between government forces and Druze fighters. Overnight, the Islamist-led government's troops withdrew from the predominantly Druze city of Sweida, where scores of people have been killed in days of conflict pitting local fighters against the Damascus authorities and Bedouin tribes. The violence in Syria escalated sharply on Wednesday as Israel launched airstrikes in Damascus while pressing attacks on government forces in the south, demanding they withdraw and saying Israel aimed to protect Syria's Druze minority. Describing Syria's new rulers as barely disguised jihadists, Israel has bombed repeatedly this year, saying it will not allow Syrian government forces to deploy forces into areas near its frontier. Facing calls from Israel's own Druze minority to shield Syria's Druze, Israel has also seized ground in the south. In a speech to the Syrian nation on Thursday, Sharaa said Israel had "consistently targeted our stability and created discord among us since the fall of the former regime", accusing it of seeking to "dismantle the unity of our people". Reuters footage showed Syrian forces moving out of Sweida overnight. The situation in Sweida was calm on Thursday morning, according to two people in contact with residents there. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said late on Wednesday the United States had engaged all the parties involved. In his first televised statement after the outbreak of violence, Sharaa said protecting Druze citizens and their rights was "our priority" and rejected any attempt to drag Druze citizens into the hands of an "external party". "We have spent our lives facing challenges and defending our people, but we have put the interests of the Syrians before chaos and destruction," he said. ISRAELI STRIKES Israel's airstrikes on Wednesday blew up part of Syria's defence ministry and hit near the presidential palace as it vowed to destroy government forces attacking Druze in southern Syria. "We will not allow southern Syria to become a terror stronghold," said Eyal Zamir, Israel's military chief of staff. The United Nations Security Council will meet on Thursday to address the conflict, diplomats said. "The council must condemn the barbaric crimes committed against innocent civilians on Syrian soil," said Israel's ambassador to the U.N., Danny Danon. "Israel will continue to act resolutely against any terrorist threat on its borders, anywhere and at any time." The Syrian Network for Human Rights said 193 people had been killed in this week's violence including six women and six children. Sharaa faces challenges to stitch Syria back together in the face of deep misgivings from groups that fear Islamist rule. In March, mass killings of members of the Alawite minority exacerbated the mistrust. Druze, followers of a religion that is an offshoot of Islam, are spread between Syria, Lebanon and Israel. Scores of Israeli Druze broke through the border fence on Wednesday, linking up with Druze on the Syrian side. Saudi Arabia to meet Iraq, Indonesia as Qatar take on UAE, Oman in World Cup qualifiers
Saudi Arabia were drawn to take on Iraq and Indonesia in the fourth phase of Asia's preliminaries for the 2026 World Cup on Thursday with back-to-back Asian Cup winners Qatar facing the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The winners of each of the three-team groups, which will be played in October, will join already-qualified Australia, Japan, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Iran and Jordan at next year's expanded 48-nation finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Saudi Arabia, who are attempting to qualify for a seventh World Cup finals since 1994, will host Group A and open against Indonesia on Oct. 8. Indonesia will then play Graham Arnold's Iraq on Oct. 11 before the Saudis and Iraq face off on Oct. 14. Group B hosts Qatar, organisers of the 2022 World Cup but who have never qualified for the finals, will take on Oman in their first game on Oct. 8. UAE will face the Omanis on Oct. 11, with Qatar and the UAE meeting on Oct. 14. The nations finishing in second place in each group will advance to a further round of qualifying, which will be held over two legs in November on a home-and-away basis. Greece arrests three over cocaine-loaded ship seized by Spain in 2023

REUTERS/Borja Suarez/File photo ATHENS - Greece has arrested three people linked with a cargo ship seized by Spanish authorities off the Canary Islands in 2023 for carrying more than 4.5 tons of cocaine from Latin America to Europe, three people close to the investigation said on Thursday. The then Greek-operated, Togo-flagged vessel Blume, which had left from Brazil, had declared a 200 tonne cargo of coffee, far below its actual capacity, raising suspicion. On January 18, 2023, Spanish authorities raided the ship, confiscated the drugs worth hundreds of millions of dollars, arrested its entire crew and took the vessel to the port of Santa Cruz on the island of Tenerife. The three people detained this week by the Greek coast guard, following an investigation with the anti-money laundering unit, are believed to be linked to the vessel's Greece-based operator, Dignatio Corp, two officials from both units told Reuters. The suspects, who have initially denied wrongdoing, will appear before a prosecutor to respond to the charges in the coming days, according to a third source. Dignatio Corp could not be reached for comment. In 2023, six days after the interception of Blume, Spanish authorities seized a second Togo-flagged vessel, the cattle ship Orion V, off the Canary Islands, for transporting a similar amount of cocaine.
