21 Movies That Weren't Super Successful At The Box Office, But Are Beyond Beloved Now

Buzz Feed28-01-2025
In a viral thread, redditor u/OkWar3191 asked, " What's a movie that bombed at the box office but was actually good?" And y'all, there are no lies detected here.
Fox Searchlight Pictures
So with that in mind, here are just a few of the most popular responses shared:
1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
"This movie is probably the biggest example of this. It was an absolute flop at the box office. It almost killed the studio that made it. At one point, there was some debate about ownership of it because nobody wanted it, so TV networks could air it without paying anyone. That's when it started getting shown on TV constantly around Christmas, and it gained its status as one of the best Christmas movies of all time."

2. Clue (1985)
"Given its current reputation, it's hard to believe it didn't even make its budget back."
— u/MrQuizzles
3. Death to Smoochy (2002)
"It's one of my favorite dark comedies ever conceived. It didn't do well at the box office and was panned by critics despite having an extraordinary cast: Ed Norton, Robin Williams, Jon Stewart, Danny DeVito, Catherine Keener, Harvey Fierstein, Danny Woodburn, and Michael Rispoli. I think it's absolutely brilliant, and everyone delivers an incredible performance, especially Norton and Williams."

4. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
"It notoriously bombed at the box office but went on to receive critical acclaim."

5. The Thing (1982)
"One of my all-time-favorite horror movies! I understand it's regularly taught in film schools, not just for the practical effects but for the paranoia that was central to the story. You never knew, even at the very end, who was genuinely human and who was an imitation."
— u/PianoManGidley

6. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
"For the classic film that it is, the original didn't do well at the box office."
— u/justmoochin
7. Matilda (1996)
"Absolute 10/10 movie. Danny DeVito as the dad was a magnificent casting choice."
— u/Redqueenhypo

8. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
"It did a modest box office and recouped its budget, but it didn't make much profit. It was nominated for 10 Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director) and was critically acclaimed, with a great cast. Explanation for poor box office was that it was out around the same time as Elf, in November/December of 2003. It was also released after the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which had done well that summer. People may not have had the appetite for another maritime film, especially one without the humor and fantastical escapism of Pirates. And why didn't those 10 nominations turn into awards? Because it had the misfortune to compete against The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, which won 11 awards that year. Some serious bad luck and poor timing are the reasons so many people have never heard of this masterpiece."
— u/Hamilton_Spector
9. The Princess Bride (1987)
"They didn't know how to market it. Is it a fantasy film? Is it an action film? Is it a comedy? Is it for kids? All the reasons it became a classic are the same reasons they couldn't get people into the theaters to see it."
— u/GardenGnomeOfEden
You can watch the original trailer for the film here:
10. Galaxy Quest (1999)
"The victim of poor marketing. The marketing team decided that 'a goofy comedy for kids' was the right way to sell it, when in reality, it was semiserious comedy aimed at adults that just happened to be kid friendly."
— u/eaglescout1984
You can watch the original trailer for the film here:
11. The Big Lebowski (1998)
"So, I heard it didn't do so well in theaters...but that's just, like, my opinion, man."
— u/DragonflyScared813

12. Treasure Planet (2002)
"For me, it's a contender for the best animated movie ever. Up there with Iron Giant."
— u/usafa_rocks
13. Hook (1991)
"It was considered a flop at the box office and has 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I will always love that movie."
— u/theDeuce
You can watch the original trailer for the film here:
"It didn't do well at the box office, but I love the shit out of it. I mean, who WOULDN'T, with Sean Connery voicing Draco and Dennis Quaid as a knight?"
— u/KnockMeYourLobes
15. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
"It's such an underrated movie, with fantastic performances from both Will Farrell and Emma Thompson. I guess it didn't totally bomb, but worldwide, it barely made back its production budget."
— u/ElijahatCarmel
16. Equilibrium (2002)
"I enjoyed it as much as The Matrix, but it's unfortunate that it just didn't make any money."
— u/sadowsentry
You can watch the original trailer for the film here:
17. Waterworld (1995)
"I fucking loved it. Don't get all the hate for it. It's Mad Max on boats."

Deion Sanders dodges Karrueche Tran question as dating rumors swirl

Deion Sanders had a clever way of dodging a question about rumors that he and actress Karrueche Tran are dating after she supported the Colorado head football coach during his bladder removal surgery in May. During an appearance on the 'Say What Needs To Be Said' podcast, former NFLer Asante Samuel asked Sanders about his relation to Tran, and mentioned how she was seen crying at the Hall of Famer's bedside in a YouTube video shared by his son Deion Jr. 'Don't kill the messenger,' Samuel said at the end of the interview. 'Everyone seen Karrueche Tran by your side during your hospital visit. Everyone want to know what that friendship is.' That's when Sanders pretended the connection was cutting out on the call. 'Hey, we got a bad connection,' Sanders, 57, said, clearly joking as he got up and began closing the computer. 5 Deion Sanders had a clever way of dodging a question about rumors that he and actress Karrueche Tran are dating after she supported the Colorado head football coach during his bladder removal surgery in May. Michelle Obama compares ESPN theatrics to watching ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta'

It is no secret that ESPN programming looks a lot different now than it did even 10 or so years ago. A network that constantly flooded viewers with some of the best highlights from the day before has turned into lots of talking-head shows like 'First Take,' 'Get Up,' 'NFL Live' and 'The Pat McAfee Show.' Advertisement Such changes have even grabbed former first lady Michelle Obama's attention, who said she cannot help but feel like she is watching reality television when she turns on the channel. 'It's all a sociological study. They think that sports is better reality TV, I'm like, 'it's the same thing.' If I listen to ESPN for an hour, it's like watching the 'Real Housewives of Atlanta,' you know?' Obama said on her brother Craig's 'IMO' podcast. 'It's the same drama, and they're yelling at each other, and they don't get along, you know? I mean, Stephen A. Smith, he's just like every other…' Michelle Obama on her podcast 'IMO' talking about how ESPN is reality tv. Michelle Obama / YouTube Advertisement Two of the hosts then joked that he'd be a perfect fit for the show. 'So that's why I'm like, 'what's the difference?' It's just, you know, it's just sociological drama,' added Obama. 'I mean, the fact that people over seasons of working still can't get along. 'They still have the same arguments, you know, and it's not just women. But this happens in sports, too. I find it fascinating.' 'It's all a sociological study. They think that sports is better reality TV, I'm like, 'it's the same thing,'' Michelle Obama said, comparing ESPN to 'Real Housewives of Atlanta.' Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Advertisement ESPN did recently cancel 'Around the Horn' after over 20 years, with one of its former analysts, Jay Marriotti, claiming it had gone too woke. In one of its final episodes, a former panelist making a return, Kate Fagan, said 'trans kids deserve to play sports.' In the show's final episode, longtime 'Around the Horn' guest Tim Cowlishaw took a shot at the network for 'hiring athletes instead of journalists.'

Battlefield 6 release date, price and beta weekend dates — Everything you need to know

Battlefield fans will soon get their hands on the highly-anticipated 'Battlefield 6' and experience what developers describe as a 'genre-defining, must-play first-person shooter experience you can't get anywhere else.' At the 'Battlefield 6' reveal livestream, broadcast Thursday on YouTube and Twitch, developer EA Games showcased new maps, modes, gameplay mechanics and the highly anticipated official release date. EA confirmed the new game will be released globally on Oct. 10, with two open beta weekends scheduled for August. 'Battlefield 6' will go head-to-head with ' Call of Duty Black Ops 7 ,' also scheduled to be released sometime later this year. 'Battlefield 6' will cost US$69.99, or around $97 for the standard version — keeping with the previous announcement by EA's CEO that the company isn't looking to jack up the price to US$80. The Phantom Edition costs US$99.99 or around $137.90. The high-tier version includes exclusive in-game content like additional soldier and vehicle skins, weapons packages and tier skips. The two are joining Black Ops alum Michael Rooker, who is set to reprise his 'Black Ops 2' role Both the standard and Phantom editions are now available to preorder on digital store fronts, which will give players access to the two beta weekends in August. The beta weekend events allow those who preordered to play the game ahead of the launch and provide early feedback to developers. Players who signed up to be a Battlefield Labs participant can also get prelaunch access, while others can watch partnered streamers on Twitch to earn early access privileges through Twitch Drops — in-game rewards viewers can earn by watching Twitch content. The first live open beta weekend will run from Aug. 9-10. The second is scheduled for Aug. 14-17. The game can be preloaded as early as Aug. 4 and be played during the beta weekends. Learning from Battlefield 2042's biggest pitfall at launch, the new Battlefield will bring back the single-player campaign, which storytelling fans missed from the last game. 'Battlefield 6' brings players into a post-NATO world on the brink of chaos and 'drowning in turmoil,' set in 2027. The story will follow a group of elite Marine raiders known as Dagger 1 — 3 as they fight to preserve global stability, EA said. From All-Out War to close-quarters chaos. 9 new multiplayer maps hit day one in #Battlefield6 🚁 Players will get to travel around the world, spanning nine new maps, including a remake of Operation Fire Storm from 'Battlefield 3.' At launch, the maps include: 'Battlefield 6' will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation, and PC (Steam, EA App, Epic Games Store) with availability both in retail and digitally, according to information on EA's page. Nintendo console players won't be able to get their hands on the game. The company said it currently has no plans to release 'Battlefield 6' on Switch 2. One of the nine maps to drop on launch features Gibraltar's Old Town, shown here. To be able to play the game, players must have these minimum PC system requirements: For the best gaming experience, EA recommends the following: Error!
