The Grinch and Blue Lights most watched film and programme in Northern Ireland
Ofcom's latest Media Nations report shows that people in Northern Ireland watched an average of four hours and 48 minutes of video content at home per day in 2024, an 18-minute year-on-year increase.
The region once again watched the most live broadcast TV of all the nations (two hours and six minutes) and was the only nation which had an increase in live viewing.
Almost three quarters of households (74%) were found to have at least one subscription-video-on-demand (SVoD) service, with Amazon Prime Video the most popular, present in 59% of homes ahead of Netflix.
In terms of broadcast TV, the BBC held an 18% share of total video viewing, followed by ITV/UTV with a 15% share.
However, in a reflection of changing viewing habits, YouTube comes in next with a 12% share ahead of other TV channels and streamers like Netflix.
Individuals in Northern Ireland spent 35 minutes per day on average viewing YouTube across all devices in the home in 2024.
Meanwhile the Grinch was the most watched film on TV in 2024, ahead of Blue Lights, which was the most watched programme in 2023.
The Grinch was the most-watched title last year, averaging 637,000 viewers on Netflix on TV sets across the whole year.
The BBC took the next two spots, with the season two premiere of Blue Lights averaging 556,000 viewers, followed by Christmas Day's Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, averaging 478,000.
Entertainment on UTV also made the top 10, with an episode of I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and The 1% Club ranking fifth and sixth, averaging 384,000 and 367,000 viewers respectively.
The report also found that TV channels BBC One (33%) and UTV (32%) were the most popular sources for news about Northern Ireland.
Radio featured much more prominently in Northern Ireland for local news compared to other nations with BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle and Cool FM/Downtown also appearing in the top five most used news sources used for news about Northern Ireland.
The region saw strong performance for local radio, with more than six in 10 adults (63.9%) listening to local commercial radio at least once a week – higher than in England, Scotland, Wales and the UK as a whole.
In terms of newer technology, four in ten households (41%) in Northern Ireland have a smart speaker, more than double the proportion with a DAB radio in the home (19%).
In terms of podcasts, nearly one in five (19%) adults in Northern Ireland were found to listen to them at least once a week in quarter one of 2025.
However, this remains lower than the UK reach figure of 22.4%, and year-on-year growth in Northern Ireland has slowed again while other nations' have increased.
Jonathan Rose, Ofcom's Northern Ireland director, said the report illustrates the enduring popularity of local radio.
'People in Northern Ireland are spending more time than ever in front of their screens,' he said.
'Broadcast TV remains popular but streamers like Amazon Prime Video and video-sharing platforms like YouTube are also now a firmly established part of our daily viewing diet.
'Our research also shows the enduring popularity of radio and especially local radio.
'Listeners in Northern Ireland have a real connection with local voices as well as news and views that reflects what's happening on their own doorstep.'

Rescue of Scots paddleboarder, ten, to feature in BBC documentary
The rescue of a ten-year-old boy by North Berwick lifeboat crews is to feature in a BBC series. Saving Lives at Sea showcases the work of RNLI crews throughout the UK and Ireland as they respond to everything from sinking ships to tidal cut-offs and kayakers in distress. In the forthcoming episode, which will be broadcast on BBC Two, a ten-year-old boy is swept out to sea on a paddleboard in North Berwick. His parents rush out to try and save him, but all three of them begin struggling in the water. Volunteer helm, Fraser Fulton, along with sibling crew members Steven and Vikki Selby, race to their rescue. Vikki, a volunteer crew member at North Berwick, said: 'I'm thrilled that North Berwick features again in such a long-running and respected series alongside our fellow lifesavers from across the RNLI. 'For my family, it'll be an extra exciting episode as my brother Steven was also on the lifeboat for this rescue, so we'll both be on the TV. 'When the public visits the station, we hear how much they appreciate a chance to see how their generous donations are used to help save lives. We are incredibly grateful for their support, as it is what we rely on to save lives at sea.' The episode will air on Thursday, August 7, 8pm on BBC Two and iPlayer. Taking to her Instagram stories to reflect on her life-altering cancer journey, the Strictly Come Dancing professional shared a video from the midst of her treatment two years. The heart-wrenching video saw the 34-year-old star wrote: "Two years ago today, I've been reminded." "I'm honestly feeling happier, stronger, and healthier than ever. So grateful and just want to remind those who may need it that this too shall pass." It comes after Amy admitted that she was 'deluded' to think she was ready for a Strictly comeback. Amy continued in her latest post: "I'm forever grateful and don't ever take for granted how I'm feeling. This a reminder to live life to the fullest and to remember to check yourself. If you aren't who is going to? Early detection can save lives." In stark contrast to the video clip from her BBC documentary, Amy posted a recent photo of herself looking fit, healthy, and happy during dance rehearsals. Alongside the photo, she wrote: "To now, living my best life in rehearsals. "Be patient, be kind to yourself, and remember to celebrate all the wins along the way. "It's been quite the journey and process to get here and certainly not easy at times but I'm so glad I pushed through and my love for dance is MORE than ever. I didn't even know that was possible but it is. Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023 after she discovered a lump in her breast in April, just before her honeymoon. She sought medical advice upon her return, leading to the diagnosis. The much-loved BBC star then received the "no evidence of disease" news from her doctors in February 2024, following a health check after her cancer treatment. In another Instagram post reflecting on her diagnosis, Amy sent an inspirational message to her followers while she was enjoying some time away on holidays with her twin sister Becky. The Strictly Come Dancing star wrote: "Some much-needed twin time. "We had the perfect little escape – full of sunshine, sangria, beach days, rooftop swims, incredible food, and most importantly, proper quality time together," she wrote. Amy went on: "After my cancer diagnosis, I promised my family (and myself) that I'd take more downtime. I used to live life at 100mph, saying yes to everything and everyone. But cancer shifts your perspective. "This year I've been incredibly lucky with new job opportunities which have been full on but so rewarding and I can't wait to share all to you very soon. So having time to slow down isn't just okay – it's essential. "These past few days have been the perfect reset and I'm heading into the new season feeling recharged, happy, stronger, and HEALTHIER than ever." Oasis death updates: Tragedy as man falls to his death at Wembley Stadium gig
A man has died after falling during an Oasis concert at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. Noel and Liam Gallagher's band have paid tribute to their late fans, saying in a statement they were "shocked and saddened" to hear the tragic news. In a statement today, the Metropolitan Police confirmed a man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining "injuries consistent with a fall". Wembley Stadium said in a separate statement "our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers" and confirmed tonight's Oasis gig will still go ahead. Liam and Noel Gallagher have since paid tribute to the fan, admitting that they are 'shocked and saddened' by the tragedy. 18:39Susan Knox Oasis concert-goers share their accounts of tragedy A horrified concertgoer took to Facebook to share their account of the tragic moment, saying: "Did anyone else see the guy drop from the upper tier last night. Another concertgoer, in a lower tier, described seeing emergency crews rush to the spot where the fan hit concrete after the plunge. She wrote: "I was directly underneath in section 211.
