Premier League clubs agree to extend price cap on away tickets

Premier League clubs unanimously agreed on Tuesday to extend the current 30 pounds ($40.56) cap on away ticket prices for a 10th season, the league said in a statement.
Since the price cap was introduced in 2016, away game attendance has risen from 82% to 91%. The cumulative away attendance for the 380 matches during the 2024-25 season was 953,420.
"The Premier League and clubs recognise the additional costs associated with fans following their team during the season, and the incredible atmospheres they create at matches," the league said in a statement.
This comes after fans of several Premier League clubs united under the Football Supporters' Association campaign "Stop Exploiting Loyalty", prompting a ticket price freeze next season from clubs like Liverpool, Brentford, and Manchester City.
The new season of England's top flight will begin on August 15 and conclude on May 24, 2026. REUTERS

With five minutes to go, Aggie Beever-Jones added the sixth before Beth Mead capped the rout with a seventh in the dying moments. "We enjoyed that game today. A lot of goals and a clean sheet. It's nice to send ourselves off to the Euros," Toone told ITV. "We've got a talented squad and we'll step out and give the nation our all." Wiegman said her side had produced a "good performance". "We expected to be in the final third a lot so we wanted to show what we could do," she said. "It was nice to score seven goals though there were times when we played an extra pass. Overall I'm really happy with the performance." England begin their Group D campaign against France on July 5, followed by games against Netherlands and Wales. The tournament runs from July 2-27. "We'll take it game by game. Let's go and get ready for France. I think there is huge potential in this squad," Wiegman said. New York mayoral candidate Mamdani defends campaign despite US Democratic unease

PHOTO: REUTERS NEW YORK - New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani defended his democratic socialism on June 29 and argued that his focus on economic issues should serve as a model for the party, even though some top Democrats have been reluctant to embrace him. In an interview with NBC's Meet the Press, Mr Mamdani said his agenda of raising taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and on corporations to pay for ambitious policies such as free buses, a US$30 (S$38) minimum hourly wage and a rent freeze was not only realistic but tailored to meet the needs of the city's working residents. "It's the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, and yet one in four New Yorkers are living in poverty, and the rest are seemingly trapped in a state of anxiety," he told NBC's Kristen Welker. Mr Mamdani's stunning victory over former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo in June 24's primary election has some party figures worried that his democratic socialism could feed Republican attacks on Democrats as too far left ahead of 2026's midterm elections. Business leaders have also expressed concern about his policies. Democrats have struggled to find a coherent message after their resounding loss in the November elections that saw President Donald Trump return to the White House and his Republicans win control of both chambers of Congress. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in June showed that a majority of American Democrats believed their party needs new leadership and to be more focused on economic issues. Earlier on June 29, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who represents part of the city, told ABC's This Week that he wasn't ready to endorse Mr Mamdani yet, saying that he needed to hear more about Mr Mamdani's vision. Other prominent New York Democrats, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have also thus far declined to endorse Mr Mamdani. Mr Trump, himself a native New Yorker, told Fox News Channel's Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo that if Mr Mamdani wins the mayoral race, "he'd better do the right thing" or Mr Trump would withhold federal funds from the city. "He's a communist. I think it's very bad for New York," Mr Trump said. Asked about Mr Trump's claim that he is a communist, Mr Mamdani told NBC it was not true and accused the president of attempting to distract from the fact that 'I'm fighting for the very working people that he ran a campaign to empower that he has since then betrayed.' He also voiced no concern that Mr Jeffries and other Democrats have not yet endorsed his candidacy. "I think that people are catching up to this election," he said. "What we're showing is that by putting working people first, by returning to the roots of the Democratic Party, we actually have a path out of this moment where we're facing authoritarianism in Washington, DC." Mr Mamdani's criticism of Israel's war in Gaza has set him apart from many mainstream Democrats and prompted allegations of antisemitism, which he has fiercely denied. Intercepted Iranian communications downplay damage from US attack, Washington Post reports

A source, who declined to be named, confirmed that account to Reuters but said there were serious questions about whether the Iranian officials were being truthful, and described the intercepts as unreliable indicators. The report by the Post is the latest, however, to raise questions about the extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear program. A leaked preliminary assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency cautioned the strikes may have only set back Iran by months. President Donald Trump has said the strikes "completely and totally obliterated" Iran's nuclear program, but U.S. officials acknowledge it will take time to form a complete assessment of the damage caused by the U.S. military strikes last weekend. The White House dismissed the report by the Post. "The notion that unnamed Iranian officials know what happened under hundreds of feet of rubble is nonsense. Their nuclear weapons program is over," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was quoted as saying by the Post. In an interview broadcast on Sunday on Fox News, Trump reiterated his confidence that the strikes had destroyed Iran's nuclear capabilities. "It was obliterated like nobody's ever seen before. And that meant the end to their nuclear ambitions, at least for a period of time," he said on the "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo" program.
