BBC star John Hunt says ‘I still talk to them every day' after crossbow murder of wife and daughters

Independent2 days ago

BBC racing commentator John Hunt broke down in an emotional interview opening up for the first time about the murder of his wife and two daughters.
In a heartbreaking chat with his daughter Amy, Mr Hunt said his wife, Carol, and two daughters, Hannah and Louise, leave behind a 'legacy of love'.
Kyle Clifford, 26, killed his ex-partner Louise Hunt, 25, her sister Hannah Hunt, 28, and their mother Carol Hunt, 61, in a quiet cul-de-sac in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on 9July last year.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the murders, Mr Hunt revealed he still speaks to them every day and his wife and daughters had lived a life of 'complete happiness'.
He told the BBC: "From the moment I wake up, I say good morning to each of them.
"Sometimes I say out loud to Hannah and Louise, 'girls, sorry I can't be with you, I'm with your mum at the moment'.
'As I close my eyes at night, I chat to them as well. They're very close to me all the time."
Mr Hunt and Amy decided to speak out for the first time because they do not want to be defined by the deaths of their family. They also said the initial reporting of the deaths was inaccurate, and it added to their grief.
"I want to breathe life back into my mum, Hannah and Louise as fully-rounded people,' Amy added.
The BBC 5 Live horse racing commentator said he also rejects the reports that Louise was in an abusive relationship with Clifford.
They said the family were very close and talked all the time, sharing everything with each other.
Louise owned a dog grooming business, and Hannah worked in beauty and aesthetics.
Their life was "one of complete happiness - awash with it, really,' Mr Hunt said.
Amy recalled going out to sushi with her two sisters one evening and said: "We were talking about how lucky we'd been as a family.
"To have had the parents we've had and the life we've had."
John thought back to when Amy had returned home and told him and Carol what they had discussed.
"It's a beautiful thing to recall,' he said. "It was a beautiful thing to hear at the time."
Clifford gained access to the family home by deceiving Carol Hunt, then stabbed her to death. It was less than two weeks after Louise had broken up with him.
After killing Mrs Hunt, he waited for an hour for Louise to enter the house, then restrained, raped and murdered her with a crossbow.
He then fatally shot Hannah Hunt when she returned to the property in the quiet cul-de-sac of Ashlyn Close in Bushey, Hertfordshire, after work.
Mr Hunt said Hannah had saved his life by sending a text to her boyfriend before she died, which alerted the police to who committed the murders.
The racing commentator was in central London at the time and believed Clifford had planned to kill him too.
"Police officers of 30 years' experience had their breath taken away by how brave she was, how she was able to think so clearly in that moment, to know what she needed to do," Mr Hunt said.
"I said it in court, and I said many, many times, her doing that has given me life,' he added.
John and Amy said that the family struggled to warm to Clifford completely. They considered him to be immature and inconsiderate.
However, he said that nothing had pointed to Clifford being capable of murder.
"But did we have any indication that this man was capable of stabbing my mother, of raping Louise, of shooting Louise and Hannah? Absolutely not,' Amy added.
Prosecutors said at the time Clifford became 'enraged' when Louise ended their 18-month relationship, leading him to 'carefully' plan the murders.
Police launched a manhunt for the killer and eventually found him injured in Lavender Hill Cemetery in Enfield, north London, after he shot himself in the chest with the crossbow. He was left paralysed from the chest down.

Man appears in court charged with murder of missing Reanne Coulson

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a missing 34-year-old woman. The family of Reanne Coulson, 34, who has not been seen since May, has been told by West Midlands Police (WMP) that officers found a body in Binley Woods on the edge of Coventry on Friday afternoon. Mohammed Durnion, 42, appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court charged with murder on Saturday and was remanded in custody ahead of a preliminary hearing at Warwick Crown Court on Tuesday, police said. Adam Moore, 38, from Coventry, who is charged with assisting an offender also appeared at Coventry Magistrates on Saturday. He was ordered to next appear in custody at Warwick Crown Court on July 24. Ms Coulson was last seen in the city in May and concerns were raised by her family after she failed to make contact with them on her birthday on June 17. Formal identification of the body found has yet to take place but police have said they 'do believe it is Reanne'. Detective Superintendent Jim Munro, from WMP's major crime unit, said: 'We've been focussed on doing all we can to find Reanne and our thoughts remain with her family at this deeply distressing time. 'While formal identification still needs to take place we do believe it is Reanne. 'We've charged a man with murder, and another for assisting an offender, but our inquiries to establish exactly what happened and why are ongoing. 'We'll continue to update and support Reanne's family.' Ms Coulson's brother Ashley thanked the public for everything they have done to help try and find her while asking that the family are left alone to grieve.

Strictly star mugged in Central London AND in broad daylight as 'traumatic' ordeal leaves them 'scared and helpless'

A Strictly Come Dancing star has been robbed in broad daylight in London this week, leaving her 'scared and helpless'. Professional dancer Michelle Tsiakkas, 29, was on her way to the dentist early in the morning when her phone was snatched. In an emotional post on Instagram, the ballroom star recounted the 'traumatising' incident to fans whilst urging them to stay vigilant. Michelle said in a video message: 'This was a couple of days ago and I've just about mentally recovered from that. It was quite traumatising on the day. 'It wasted my whole day and made me feel awful, scared, helpless and I don't want the same to happen to you. 'My phone got stolen. My phone got stolen. I mean I see it happening all the time but it's just one of those things that you just never think it's gonna happen to you. and then it does.' Michelle, who joined Strictly three years ago, said a man on a bike swiped her mobile while she was in Convent Garden. The brunette explained: 'So it was early morning. I was on my way to the dentist in London. 'It was around Covent Garden so the streets were really quiet. I think I was just the only person around so maybe I was an easy target and I whipped out my phone to have a look at the directions to see where my dentist was. 'I was on the actual street of the dentist and what happens? A man comes on a bike behind me, sweeps past me and grabs my phone. 'So he's grabbed my phone. He's on an electric bike and my heart just sank. I tried to I think like reach for it and that made me fall on my knees on the floor and graze my knee. 'I think my reflex was just to swear and then scream give me back my phone and clearly you know that didn't work. 'He just left. He was wearing a mask so there was no way that I could have seen what he looked like and he was going really fast on that electric bike so there was no way on earth I could have caught up with him. 'Thankfully there were two really lovely and helpful women there and they'd seen that I was a bit distressed.' Michelle was flooded with support from concerned fans as well as her Strictly family, with fellow pro dancer Nancy Xu simply commenting with love heart emojis. Last year Michelle was given her first celebrity pairing by BBC bosses, coupled up with under-fire EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick. Meanwhile, earlier this year it was reported Michelle's Italian hunk boyfriend Simone Arena, 33, is joining the dance competition's line up of dance professionals who are paired with the celebrity contestants. The Italian dancer is no stranger to the Strictly format after previously starring as a pro on the Belgian, Italian and Irish versions of the show. Born in Catania, Italy, Simone has been a professional dancer since childhood, becoming the Vice Italian Latin Champion at the age of 16. He has also performed in the Broadway touring production of Burn the Floor and was also announced as part of the cast of Somnium: A Dancer's Dream with Strictly Come Dancing stars, Katya Jones and Neil Jones, in 2019. Simone joined the Strictly global franchise in 2021, winning the Belgian version of the show with artistic gymnast Nine Derwael. As a professional on the Irish version of the dance competition, he was partnered with RuPaul's Drag Race winner, Blu Hydrangea, as well as Kin actress, Yasmin Seky. A source told the Sun on Sunday: 'Simone blew the Strictly bosses away when he auditioned as a new professional on the show. 'He is no stranger to the Strictly format after previously starring as a pro on the Belgian, Italian and Irish versions of the series. 'Simone is well known among the pros and his girlfriend Michelle [Tsiakkas] loved her time on the series last year.'
