'The best few weeks of my career' - Lions' Conan

BBC News20 hours ago
Like every other player in the British and Lions squad, Jack Conan waits nervously for the selection news before Saturday's first Test against Australia. The 32-year-old from Bray has been through this process before, albeit under different circumstances four years ago.In South Africa, the Lions played in empty stadiums because of Covid-19.Ireland's Conan was picked for all three Test matches and that's a record he'd like to continue in Australia, on a tour he has described as "the best few weeks of my career".
"Yeah, it's chalk and cheese but it's been unbelievably special, unbelievably enjoyable," explained Conan."It's vastly different to four years ago. With no-one in the crowd, it felt eerie and strange not to have anyone there at what should be the biggest occasion of your career: A few weeks with the lads getting to move about, see some of the different places and see a lot of red at the games."The atmosphere [here] has been incredible. I thought the game in Adelaide was unbelievable."I think everyone's absolutely loved it and it's been a great challenge so far and we're looking forward to pushing on and being better than we have been in the last few weeks."I think everyone will be a bit nervous about selection but I think everyone's gone incredibly well, especially in the back row."
The puzzle of sorting out the best combination for the back row has been solved by the coaching staff and the world will find out the answer on Thursday.Striking the right balance could be the difference between winning and losing the first Test with the breakdown likely to be crucial."It's tough for the coaches I'm sure and hopefully we've given them all plenty of headaches over the last while, because I think no matter who's been out there they've taken their opportunity really well," Conan said."It's about those lads who get to run out on the weekend to do right by the lads who aren't playing - and the lads who are on the bench and making the most of their opportunity."That level of talent pushes everyone on to be at your best. I don't think anyone can say that they've been poor over the last few weeks and I think especially in the back row the standard's been unbelievably high."It's been a joy to play with the lads and get to know them and I've absolutely loved it over the last few weeks."
The Lions have been keen to emphasise they are focused on themselves but like many of the squad, Conan has been coached by Wallabies Joe Schmidt and there is a lot of mutual respect."I think he's had success no matter where he's gone whether it be with Leinster, with us and obviously the All Blacks and now Australia," Conan said."There's an emphasis he puts on certain areas of the game."Look, it's not going to be an easy game at all."Test match rugby never is so we're going to have to be at our best."I think the media might give them a bit of a hard time but we know that they're an unbelievably good side with incredible athletes across the park."And we know how motivated they are going to be for this first Test match in 12 years on home soil against the Lions so we'll have to make sure that their motivation isn't hard on us."So the serious business of this tour is about to kick in and Conan is ready to face the challenge - if selected."No-one can ever take away being a Lion for me and playing in three Tests - but four years ago is definitely not the same as now," he said."This has been an incredible joy and the best few weeks of my career and I think that's a sentiment that's shared throughout the squad."Everyone's loving it and loving the challenge. We are unbelievably excited for Saturday to hopefully we can go out and create a bit of history."

Strong winds blamed for 427 drones falling into Yarra River during Women's World Cup light show

Strong winds have been blamed for more than 400 drones falling from the sky into Melbourne's Yarra River during a light show celebrating the Matildas before the Women's World Cup. The light show, using 500 Damoda drones, was scheduled for the evening of 14 July 2023 over the river in Docklands, in Melbourne's CBD. The drones, part of a show celebrating Australia's women's football team, launched at 6.30pm. Less than two minutes later many began showing critical errors indicating an autopilot failure, according to an Australian Transport Safety Bureau report into the incident, released this week. Shortly after, pilots lost connection to the drones and they began colliding with each other, the ATSB chief commissioner, Angus Mitchell, noted in the report. Sign up for Guardian Australia's breaking news email The remote pilot attempted to return the drones to the launch site individually, but 427 of the 500 drones were lost, the majority falling into the Yarra. Divers were sent in to recover them, but were only able to retrieve 236 out of the 427 that entered the water, with 191 remaining unrecovered. The ATSB's investigation found that the wind conditions at the time exceeded the drones' capacity shortly after launch, triggering the collisions and errors. 'The wind limit exceedance was not identified by the [remote pilot] as they were unaware that the wind speed affecting the aircraft was displayed on the [ground control station] computer screen,' Mitchell said. The report identified the operator did not have a system to ensure all of its pilots could use the ground control station's software features, increasing the risk of pilots failing to identify potential issues in the lead-up to the show. Sign up to Breaking News Australia Get the most important news as it breaks after newsletter promotion It also found the software did not have the functionality to actively alert a pilot to wind speed exedances. Damoda has advised the ATSB it is considering an update to enable those alerts. 'This incident demonstrates the importance of drone pilots being familiar with all functionality and data provided by relevant ground control software,' Mitchell said. 'It also shows the impact human factors can have on drone operations, and how they should be actively considered and managed.'

Owen Farrell misses out on Lions squad for first Australia Test

Owen Farrell has missed out on a place in the Lions matchday squad with Marcus Smith preferred on the bench for the first Test against Australia, Telegraph Sport understands. Tom Curry, the Sale Sharks openside flanker, is also poised to win a place in a ferociously competitive back row for game against the Wallabies at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday. Henry Pollock, the dynamic 20-year-old England flanker, has been squeezed out of the matchday 23. Yet the biggest surprise is that Farrell will not be involved in the Lions squad against the Wallabies, barring any late injuries in training on Wednesday. Ever since Telegraph Sport broke the story that head coach Andy Farrell had called up his own son to replace the injured Elliot Daly, it appeared inevitable that the 33-year-old would at least gain a place on the bench. Farrell, the former England captain, made his first appearance of the tour after coming on as a replacement in the 48-0 victory against an AUNZ invitational XV on Saturday and instantly demonstrated his class. 'He's done exactly what we knew he was going to do in terms of help and influence, and obviously contributed on the field when that time came up,' Richard Wigglesworth, the Lions assistant coach, said on Tuesday. 'You all know how good he is, the influence he has, his knowledge and how he helps other people get better. I don't need to stand (sit) here, saying it again. 'We're going over old ground and it only comes up because it's maybe not expressed like that at the time. We all knew how good he was going to be and it's been that way. As he does, he's always working on getting better and doing that. But he's the influential Owen that we know and love.' However, Farrell was called up having not played a match for nearly nine weeks before the tour after an injury-hit season with Racing 92 in which he was dogged by a groin problem. He had not played Test rugby since the 2023 World Cup when he stepped down from international rugby. Andy Farrell has repeatedly stated that he views Owen primarily as an inside centre rather than a fly half. Smith, the Harlequins playmaker, can cover the back three, which may have been a trump card in his selection, with Mack Hansen and Blair Kinghorn both set to miss out through injury. Perhaps the most contentious area of selection was in the back row where it appears Curry will be trusted to deliver in the Test match despite not delivering his best form on the tour. The likes of Jac Morgan, Josh van der Flier, Ben Earl and Pollock had all delivered stronger individual displays but Curry has the pedigree of starting all three Tests of the 2021 series against South Africa. Although Curry has not been in as eye-catching form in Australia, Andy Farrell has raved about his off-ball work. 'He's a machine,' Farrell said. 'His work rate, his stuff off the ball is very impressive. The stuff that he does off the ball makes teams tick. He's so fit, so determined to have an impact on the game, especially as far as physicality is concerned. I think he started the tour really well.' England's Ollie Chessum, who can cover second row and blindside flanker, is also set to be handed a starting berth and Jack Conan is likely to be trusted at No 8. Following the win against the AUNZ team, the coaches held their final selection meeting on Monday night before informing the players of the team at a squad meeting on Wednesday, when they will have their main performance training session of the week. Wigglesworth said that the coaches' meeting was challenging in terms of discussing selection. 'It certainly wasn't easy,' Wigglesworth said. 'Very conversational as it always has been the whole way through, as it was with the selection process. Willing to be challenged on it, everyone being able to voice an opinion and then we come back to it and back to it again. 'It wasn't very, 'this is the team, this is final'. It's still not been announced so who knows? We could go back and we're having another one.'

Conor McGregor ‘reveals huge UFC comeback' just a day after Azealia Banks ‘nudes' allegations and cheating scandal

Conor McGregor will make his long-awaited return to the UFC at their rumoured White House event next year, Bare Knuckle FC founder Dave Feldman has alleged. The Irish MMA superstar has not stepped foot inside the octagon since July 2021, where he suffered a horror leg break against American fighter Dustin Poirier in the third fight of their trilogy. McGregor was set to face rival Michael Chandler last summer but, after months of fight build-up, was forced to pull out of the bout due to a toe injury. While many fans have given up hope of McGregor making, yet another, comeback to the sport, Feldman's comments may give them renewed hope. 'He's got two fights left on his contract. He's got to get right,' he told The Ariel Helwani Show. 'The whole world's waiting. Is he going to get in shape and fight? 'He told me in person, he whispered in my ear, he said, "I'm in the testing pool. I'm getting ready to make my comeback. I'm going to fight on that big card, then I'm going to have another fight, and then we can talk".' McGregor himself also teased his MMA return last week at a Bare Knuckle FC event. 'It's looking like I'm headed to the Oval Office again,' he said. 'That's where I'm headed next'. His statement was met by a round of applause from fans in attendance. Donald Trump announced that he wants a card to take place at the White House during America's 250th birthday next July - which led to McGregor's interest. As part of his victory lap after Congress passed his 'Big Beautiful Bill', Trump mentioned ways that the United States would celebrate its 250th birthday. Among the suggestions was a mixed martial arts event inside The Octagon steps from the Oval Office. News of McGregor's potential return comes just a day after he found himself embroiled in scandal earlier on Monday when rapper Azealia Banks shared alleged nude photos of him, which she claimed he sent to her unprompted. Banks, who is known for getting into high-profile feuds on social media, posted two shocking photos seemingly of McGregor posing in the mirror while completely naked, which she alleges he sent to her via direct message on X despite not following him. 'How you gonna send a b**** a some crooked d*** pics then threaten her not to tell,' she wrote alongside the screenshots. '@TheNotoriousMMA n**** do you know who the f*** I am? This is HARAM'. McGregor was spotted smooching the mystery woman in full view of fellow beachgoers Banks then continued: 'Like how are you really going to sexually harrass me with the potato farmer d*** then threaten me not to tell???? Honey…… ain't u trying to be the president of Ireland what is it giving fam? Use some f***ing sunscreen damn'. As well as the alleged nude selfies, the screenshots also show a message from what appears to be McGregor's account reading: 'Don't be a rat cos all rats get caught'. Alongside one image which seemingly shows his manhood strapped to a dumbbell, the Irish fighter apparently wrote: 'Lifting weights'. Banks then shared another screenshot of the alleged pictures suddenly being 'hidden' on X because she does not follow McGregor's account. Although it is unclear if he had anything to do with that change, she commented: 'The motherf***er woke up early LOL.' Banks' accusations came after McGregor, who has been engaged to his fiancée Dee Devlin since August 2020, was caught packing on the PDA with a mystery bikini-clad woman on a Florida beach over the weekend. A beaming McGregor was all over the unknown woman during a beach day in Fortwife Lauderdale, Florida, with his loyal partner Dee Devlin nowhere in sight. McGregor was spotted enjoying a cold beverage while the woman, who was dressed in a racy leopard print bikini, shared his sun lounger. The pair chatted away in the shade as the sportsman cozied up to her by wrapping his arm around her back.
