Epsom Derby 2025: the pin-stickers' guide

Irish Examiner06-06-2025
It may not attract the attention it once did but the Epsom Derby remains one of the biggest days on the racing calendar and this year's renewal of the iconic race shapes as an intriguing one. Will Aidan O'Brien win a record-extending 11th premier Classic? Will 2000 Guineas hero Ruling Court stay for Godolphin? Can Galway jockey Rossa Ryan add a Derby to a CV that already includes an Arc? How will supplemented French pair Midak and New Ground fare? Questions aplenty and while we'll only know the answers shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday, here's our horse-by-horse guide to the 246th Derby.
1: Al Wasl Stom
Trainer: Owen Burrows
Jockey: David Probert
Rating: 3/10
Odds: 100-1
Made all when getting off the mark at the third time of asking at Chester last month but likely to be out of his depth in this company.
2: Damysus
Trainer: John and Thady Gosden
Jockey: James Doyle
Rating: 6/10
Odds: 12-1
Shaped well when second in the Dante and going a furlong and a half further could bring about further improvement. Each-way claims.
3: Delacroix
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Rating: 8/10
Odds: 11-4
Victorious in two Derby trials at Leopardstown and looks sure to stay the trip but the record of Dubawi colts in this Classic (0 from nine) is a niggling worry.
4: Green Storm
Trainer: Charlie Johnston
Jockey: Billy Loughnane
Rating: 3/10
Odds: 40-1
Second in a weak French Group 1 as a juvenile but a record of one win from seven starts doesn't inspire confidence.
5: Lambourn
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Jockey: Wayne Lordan
Rating: 6/10
Odds: 15-2
Second to stablemate Delacroix in the Ballysax before winning the Dee Stakes at Chester. Could be the pacesetter.
6: Lazy Griff
Trainer: Charlie Johnston
Jockey: Christophe Soumillon
Rating: 3/10
Odds: 66-1
Like Green Storm, he was kept busy as a two-year-old and like his stablemate he struggles to get his head in front.
7: Midak
Trainer: Francois-Henri Graffard
Jockey: Mickael Barzalona
Rating: 7/10
Odds: 12-1
Unraced at two, this supplemented French raider is unbeaten in three starts this season and looks an intriguing contender.
8: New Ground
Trainer: Henri-Francois Devin
Jockey: Alexis Pouchin
Rating: 3/10
Odds: 25-1
Another supplemented French challenger but could only manage third in two starts this season. Unlikely to land a meaningful blow.
9: Nightime Dancer
Trainer: Richard Hannon
Jockey: Jamie Spencer
Rating: 3/10
Odds: 100-1
Third in Lingfield Derby Trial behind two Ballydoyle colts not deemed good enough to make the trip to Epsom. Likely to struggle.
10: Nightwalker
Trainer: John and Thady Gosden
Jockey: Tom Marquand
Rating: 5/10
Odds: 20-1
Fifth in the Dante, the Frankel colt should appreciate the step up in trip but may struggle to keep tabs on the leaders in the early part of the race.
11: Pride Of Arras
Pride Of Arras and Rossa Ryan (light blue) winning The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
Jockey: Rossa Ryan
Rating: 9/10
Odds: 5-1
An impressive winner of the Dante on only his second career start, this talented son of New Bay should have no issue with the trip. Massive player.
12: Rogue Impact
Trainer: James Owen
Jockey: Luke Morris
Rating: 2/10
Odds: 70-1
Last of six at Lingfield last month and there's no logical reason why he should fare any better in this company.
13: Ruling Court
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Jockey: William Buick
Rating: 8/10
Odds: 10-3
If the 2000 Guineas hero stays, he'll win as his Newmarket triumph is undoubtedly the strongest form on offer. That's a significant if though.
14: Sea Scout
Trainer: Simon and Ed Crisford
Jockey: Harry Davies
Rating: 4/10
Odds: 50-1
Ticks the track box having won at Epsom in April but saw his limitations exposed when eighth in the Dante last time out.
15: Stanhope Gardens
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
Jockey: Hector Crouch
Rating: 6/10
Odds: 12-1
Got within a neck of Delacroix as a two-year-old and while his win at Salisbury last month proved little, he has better prospects than many here.
16: Tennessee Stud
Trainer: Joseph O'Brien
Jockey: Dylan Browne McMonagle
Rating: 5/10
Odds: 28-1
A Group 1 winner in France last season but was firmly put in his place by Delacroix at Leopardstown last month. Hard to fancy.
17: The Lion In Winter
The Lion In Winter and Stephen Gray pictured at Ballydoyle Stables. Pic: Healy Racing
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Jockey: Colin Keane
Rating: 5/10
Odds: 6-1
Winter favourite for this Classic but surrendered his unbeaten record when sixth in the Dante. Being drawn in stall 19 is a further negative.
18: Tornado Alert
Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor
Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Rating: 5/10
Odds: 20-1
Ran a big race at a big price when fourth in the 2000 Guineas but it's hard to see his stamina lasting over four furlongs further.
19: Tuscan Hills
Trainer: Raphael Freire
Jockey: David Egan
Rating: 4/10
Odds: 66-1
Unbeaten in two starts as a two-year-old but could only manage seventh in the Dante last month. Little chance.
Darren Norris' verdict
History suggests opposing Team Ballydoyle in the Derby is an act of folly and it's easy to make a coherent case for Delacroix giving Aidan O'Brien a record-extending 11th win in the premier Classic. However, the Dubawi colt has looked more solid than spectacular in his Leopardstown wins so a chance is taken on PRIDE OF ARRAS landing the spoils for Arc-winning pair Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan. His lack of experience could be viewed as a negative but 2013 victor Ruler of The Word and 2022 hero Desert Crown had also only run twice before rocking up at Epsom and Pride Of Arras showed enough at York to suggest he has all the attributes required to become the 10th Dante winner since 1980 to go on to Derby glory. Should stamina prove Ruling Court's undoing, unbeaten French raider Midak can hit the frame at a decent price.

Wave-riding canines take on surf to be named top dog

A surfing competition with a difference drew thousands of spectators to a beach near San Francisco, as dogs of all sizes took to the waves. Labs, terriers and spaniels were among dozens of dogs riding the surf at Pacifica State Beach, about 14 miles south of the city, in the annual World Dog Surfing Championships. They competed against similar-sized dogs for a chance to appear in the finals, while additional heats featured multiple dogs – wearing life vests and often goggles – surfing tandem or riding with people. Once out on the waves, their owners helped them hop on their colourful surf boards as the crowd cheered from the beach. Judges assessed how long the dogs remained on their boards, how long they held their balance, and whether they performed any tricks, like turning around while riding. Coconut catches a wave during the contest at Pacifica State Beach (Eakin Howard/AP) Iza, a five-year-old French bulldog, won the single surfer heat for medium-size dogs for the first time, her owner David Fasoli said. He said he found 'pure joy' during the pandemic when he brought home a surfboard from his job at Costco and taught Iza to balance in the swimming pool. The two soon started swimming in the sea and learning to ride waves as passers-by watched in awe. Now, their competitions are all about defying expectations. 'I have a disability – I only have one hand – so a non-sporting human combined with a non-sporting dog breed, we are kind of phenomenal, defying the odds of what people think we're capable of doing,' Mr Fasoli said after the competition. Carson jumps off his board and into the surf (Eakin Howard/AP) Ten-year-old yellow lab Charlie likes surfing so much he will grab his surfboard and run towards the water – his owners sometimes have to hide it to ensure some peace. Charlie, who has his own Instagram page, entered the extra-large single surfer heat. He also rode tandem with two other dogs in what their humans called 'The Dream Team'. Owner Maria Nieboer said: 'He loves the crowd.' Charlie and Ms Nieboer's husband Jeff prepare for waves together. When Mr Nieboer spots a good one, he turns the board around and tells Charlie to 'get ready'. He pushes the board forward, and Charlie scrunches down and rides the wave as long as he can. Charlie can even steer the board by leaning, and surfs towards an awaiting Ms Nieboer on the shore. Faith the surfing Pitbull gets pushed through the breakers by owner James Wall (Eakin Howard/AP) He does not have to be rewarded with treats for any of it, Mr Nieboer said, adding: 'Charlie does what Charlie wants to do once we're in the water.' Charlie's 'Dream Team' compatriot, fellow yellow lab Rosie, was in four heats. The four-year-old's owner, Steve Drottar, said she is 'stoked' after they go surfing, which they do four to five times a week back home in Santa Cruz. 'It's like, hey, we actually did something today, right? We did something together as a team,' Mr Drottar said. 'The fact that you can do something as a team with your dog creates a different bond than you have when you just take your dog for a walk.' He can tell Rosie feels a sense of accomplishment afterwards because she is extra happy, wags her tail extra hard and snuggles even more than usual, he said. 'It's like we go home on the couch and it feels like she's saying 'Thank-you'.'

Shels bounce back with victory at the Showgrounds

Shelbourne extended their unbeaten SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division run to five games with a 2-0 win over Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds, bouncing back from a disappointing European performance mid-week. Ali Coote and Sean Boyd were the goalscorers as Joey O'Brien's side moved to within three points of Drogheda United in fourth. A bad night for Sligo was made worse with six minutes to go when goalkeeper Sam Sargeant was sent off as he was judged to have handled the ball outside the box by referee Rob Harvey, although replays suggest it may have been on the line. Unbeaten in their last five league games, the Bit O'Red were one of the league's form sides coming into this tie. A win against the 2024 Premier Division champions would have brought Russell's men level on points with Galway United who were beaten on Friday by the league's bottom side Cork City. Russell lost both Jake Doyle-Hayes and Francely Lomboto this week, with both players departing the club, while Ciaron Harkin joined from Derry City and was named on the bench for this game. Shels, who had a gruelling trip home from Kazakhstan mid-week where they were in European action, named Milan Mbeng after the French man signed from Cork City. Cian Kavanagh's miss on ten minutes was the talking point in an otherwise uneventful first-half, with neither side bringing the entertainment that may have been expected. The former St Patrick's Athletic striker just needed a slight touch to divert the ball past Speel in the Shels goals after Will Fitzgerald's free-kick was knocked on in the direction of Kavanagh in front of goal. That was as close as either side would come to opening the scoring in the first-half, but Shels found the net two minutes into the second-half. Coote got a hold of possession in the middle, and pushed his way past a couple of Sligo players before driving into the top corner with Sam Sargeant well beaten in the Sligo goals. Paddy McClean almost had Sligo back on level terms but the Derry man couldn't keep his header down from Owen Elding's cross as Sligo battled hard to find an equaliser. John Russell responded to his side's inability to break Shels down by switching up their approach, in truth it was game over on 77 minutes when Boyd added a second for Shels. As the home side failed to clear the ball from their defence, John Martin picked out the free Boyd in front of goal, and all he needed to do was poke it in past Sargeant for 2-0. There was further controversy, though, as the home side were reduced to ten when referee Rob Harvey gave Sargeant a straight red card for handling the ball outside the box, but replays show that Sargeant looked to be on the line as he handled the ball. That result leaves Sligo in ninth place, three points off Galway in eighth, while Shels are just three points off Drogheda United who occupy fourth spot. Sligo Rovers: Sam Sargeant, Conor Reynolds (Wilson Waweru, 67), Paddy McClean, Ollie Denham, Kyle McDonagh (John Mahon, 67), James McManus, Seb Quirk, Jad Hakiki, Owen Elding, Cian Kavanagh (Conor Walsh, 85), Will Fitzgerald Shelbourne: Wessel Speel, Milan Mbeng (Sean Gannon, 68), Lewis Temple, Paddy Barrett, Kameron Ledwidge, Kerr McInroy, JJ Lunney, James Norris (Sean Moore, 82), Ali Coote (John Martin, 68), Harry Wood (Ellis Chapman, 82), Mipo Odubeko (Sean Boyd, 59) Attendance: 3,167
