Police arrest more Palestine Action supporters
'Officers have made 41 arrests for showing support for a proscribed organization,' the Metropolitan Police said on X, noting another person had been arrested for common assault.
'The area was cleared within the last hour,' it added in a mid-afternoon update.
Footage showed police moving in on a small group of protesters displaying signs supporting Palestine Action who had gathered at lunchtime at the steps of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament Square.
Campaign group Defend Our Juries, which had announced it would hold rallies Saturday in several UK cities 'to defy' the ban, criticized the response.
'The Metropolitan Police were out in force again today, arresting more than 40 people in Parliament Square for holding signs opposed to genocide and supporting Palestine Action,' a spokesperson told AFP.
'Who do the police think they are serving in this?' the spokesperson added, calling the ban 'Orwellian.'
It comes a week after the arrest of 29 people, including a priest and a number of health professionals, for offences under anti-terrorism laws.
Police have warned since the Palestine Action ban kicked in on July 5 that expressing support for it was now a crime.
'It is a criminal offence to invite or express support for a proscribed organization,' the Met said on X ahead of Saturday's planned protests.
'As we saw last week, those who do breach the law will face action.'
Palestine Action's proscription cleared parliament in the first days of July, and a last-ditch High Court challenge failed to stop it becoming law.
The government announced plans for the ban under the Terrorism Act 2000 days after the group's activists claimed to be behind a break-in at an air force base in southern England.
Two aircraft there were sprayed with red paint, causing an estimated £7 million ($9.55 million) in damage.
Four people charged in relation to the incident remain in custody.
Palestine Action has condemned the proscription -- which makes it a criminal offence to belong to or support the group, punishable by up to 14 years in prison -- as an attack on free speech.

It has been used in coronations at the abbey ever since–first of English and then of British monarchs. The English and Scottish crowns were united under one monarch in the 17th century. The stone's presence in London long irked Scottish nationalists. In 1950, it was stolen from Westminster Abbey by four Glasgow university students but was returned in time for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. It was given back to Scotland in 1996, 700 years after its seizure, and displayed in Edinburgh Castle with the understanding that it would return to England for use in future coronations. Sensitivities around the stone meant that it had to be moved to London in secrecy and amid tight security for the coronation of King Charles III in 2023. Last year, it was put on display at the newly renovated Perth Museum, where, according to the building's website, there are a range of 24/7 security measures in place at the Museum to protect this precious object. Culture Perth and Kinross, which oversees the museum, said the stone wasn't damaged in the incident.

Four confirmed dead in small plane crash at London regional airport
LONDON: Four people were killed when a small plane crashed at a London regional airport at the weekend, UK police said on Monday. The plane went down around 4:00 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Sunday, shortly after departing London Southend airport in southeast England for the Netherlands. 'Sadly, we can now confirm that all four people on board died,' Essex Police chief superintendent Morgan Cronin told reporters. 'We are working to officially confirm their identities. At this stage, we believe all four are foreign nationals,' he added. Cronin said the force was interviewing dozens of witnesses, and detectives and forensic teams were working to 'build an accurate picture of what happened.' He added that the airport 'will remain closed until further notice.' Video footage had shown a 12-meter (39-feet) plane in flames with a plume of black smoke at Southend-on-Sea. Police evacuated a nearby golf club and rugby club as a precaution. According to the BBC, the plane was a Beechcraft B200. Southend-on-Sea is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of the capital, and its airport is the sixth largest in the London area.

UK, Pakistan agree to set up new business advisory council at inaugural trade dialogue
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the United Kingdom (UK) decided to form a new business advisory council as officials from both countries met in London at the inaugural UK-Pakistan Trade Dialogue, the British high commission in Islamabad said on Monday. The development came during the dialogue co-chaired by UK Minister for Trade Policy and Economic Security Douglas Alexander and Pakistan's Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, who is on an official visit to the UK from July 14 till July 20. The UK maintains zero-tariff access of Pakistan's exports post-Brexit, making it Pakistan's largest European and third-largest individual export partner, according to the Pakistani foreign ministry. The UK-Pakistan Business Advisory Council will bring together senior business leaders and government officials to provide strategic advice on policy reform, offer a confidential forum for engagement, and help promote commercial opportunities by addressing market access challenges and sharing best practices. 'Today's Dialogue marks the next step in our long-standing relationship with Pakistan, taking our trading partnership to the next level and unlocking new opportunities for businesses in both our countries,' Alexander was quoted as saying by the British high commission. 'By deepening cooperation in key sectors like health care and digital technology – areas central to the UK's Industrial Strategy – we can drive growth, foster innovation, and create jobs.' The high commission did not share an exact date about the establishment of the new advisory council. Bilateral trade between the two countries in goods and services reached £4.7 billion in 2024, an increase of 7.3 percent, or £320 million, compared to the previous year, according to the UK government data. Of this £4.7 billion, UK exports to Pakistan amounted to £2.2 billion, while its imports from Pakistan amounted to £2.5 billion. Khan, whose visit aims to deepen bilateral commercial ties and strengthen institutional frameworks, said the dialogue laid the foundation for a more structured and forward-looking trade relationship between both sides. 'The UK remains one of Pakistan's most important economic partners,' he was quoted as saying.
