Project on the anvil to convert old diesel-powered KSRTC buses into e-buses

The Hindu21-06-2025

Old diesel-powered buses of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be converted into electric buses under a joint project of the transport utility, the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT) and Toshiba.
Quick charging
What is special about this initiative is that the buses will be fitted with lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) batteries which can be charged in 10 to 20 minutes using pantograph charging systems during stopovers at bus stations. The buses will be equipped with rooftop charging receivers that facilitate overhead charging using pantograph arms.
The project will see the engines, gearbox and transmission systems of KSRTC buses older than five years replaced with battery, battery management system (BMS) and Motor Control Unit (MCU). 'Toshiba will be supplying the battery. As the buses will use a quick-charging system, passengers need not be kept waiting,' ANERT director Narendra Nath Veluri told The Hindu.
Pilot project
Under a pilot project, three buses will undergo conversion with a power train system comprising a 200 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and the 100 to 150 kWh LTO battery.
In the initial phase, the buses will ply on the Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam route and the Thiruvananthapuram-Kottarakkara route. The pantograph charging facility will be installed in select bus stations on the route such as Kayamkulam. But a decision is yet to be finalised on this point, Mr. Veluri said.
Lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP) batteries commonly used in electric vehicles take one to four hours to be fully charged.
Emission control
The Kerala State Action Plan on Climate Change 2023-2030 notes that Kerala has around 1.3 lakh buses, both government and privately-owned, and the current growth rate is as low as 1.5%. 'At this rate, Kerala is estimated to have 1.5 lakh buses by 2030, including private buses. Hence there is scope for the introduction of e-buses that can bring down emissions remarkably,' the action plan says.
The 14th Five Year Plan of the State envisages improving the efficiency of public transportation by modernising the KSRTC's bus fleet with energy-efficient buses with LNG/CNG and e-buses.

No info on many buses, passengers seek changes to KSRTC's tracking app

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSRTC is facing challenges in promoting its new bus-tracking app among passengers. While concerns have been raised over its complicated user interface, the most pressing issue revolves around the attitude of conductors. The passengers have complained that the conductors often disable the tracking system, undermining the app's purpose, and refuse to accept digital payments. Voicing their frustrations on KSRTC's social media handles, the passengers pointed out that some conductors claim the tracking system drains the ticketing machine's battery, while others refuse UPI payments and travel cards. One passenger suggested that the app's bus-tracking feature be based on bus numbers. Currently, the app tracks buses based on their routes, which many find inconvenient. 'The live bus-tracking feature is especially beneficial for passengers who have reserved tickets. However, most long-distance buses are running hours late. Despite the launch of this much-anticipated app, passengers are still disappointed. There's no live tracking information in KSRTC's pre-journey messages. If you're lucky and patient, you may be able to change the location on the map and locate the bus,' said one frustrated passenger. In response to the criticism, KSRTC re-released instructional videos on Friday, showing how passengers can use the Chalo app to check bus schedules, seat availability, and make live reservations. The app also includes a feature to calculate the time it takes for passengers to reach the bus stop.

Concession pass: KSRTC to make the ‘smart' switch

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KSRTC is set to roll out student concession passes as smart cards. Students from classes 1 to 12 will be able to use the chip-based card for travelling on a specified route for 25 days a month. 'The smart cards would be introduced within 20 days,' Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar said. 'KSRTC has decided to replace paper passes with smart cards embedded with chips. These can store route details and track the number of travel days. Conductors will validate the card by scanning it on the ticketing machine,' he said, adding that the paper system was laborious and the new format would be more efficient. Plus One students will be eligible for a smart card with two-year validity. The annual fee of the concession card will remain unchanged at `110. KSRTC also plans to extend the smart card facility to persons with disabilities. Around four lakh general-purpose travel cards will be introduced for the public and made available in the market.
