IND vs ENG Test Day 5: India slip to 112/8 at lunch, stare at defeat after batters fail to deliver

The Hindu8 hours ago
Indian batters failed to stand the test of England pacers led by Jofra Archer on a spicy day five pitch to slide to the brink of defeat in the third Test at Lord's here on Monday (July 14, 2025).
Chris Woakes had Nitish Reddy caught behind at the stroke of lunch to leave India tottering at 112 for eight chasing 193.
Starting the day at 58 for four and needing another 135 runs on a rapidly deteriorating surface with variable bounce, India needed their experienced batters to fire for their fourth success at the iconic ground since 1932 but it was not to be.
The loss of Rishabh Pant (9 off 12 balls), K L Rahul (39 off 58) and Washington Sundar (0 off 4) inside the first hour made chasing 193 an improbable task for India.
The key for India was the presence of Rahul and Pant in the middle but both departed in a space of 18 balls. They needed to see out Archer's spell but the tearaway pacer struck twice in a fiery spell to put England on top.
Pant, who injured his left index finger while keeping on day one, clearly looked in discomfort facing the extreme pace of Archer, wincing his hand in pain every time the ball hurried on to his bat.
Pant tried his best to make a difference, collecting a couple of fours via a flick and a one-handed drive off the Barbados-born bowler.
Archer, making a Test comeback after more than four years, flaunted his X-factor once again as he produced a beauty to send a half-fit Pant back into the dressing room. The ball straightened just enough from the angle to shatter Pant's off-stump.
Considering the occasion and the high intensity of players from both teams, it was not a surprise to see Archer having a quick word to Pant as the wicketkeeper started his long walk back to the players' balcony via the legendary Long Room.
Rahul, at the other end, needed to hold the innings together but when he departed three overs after Pant's dismissal, the writing was on the wall.
England captain Ben Stokes bowled his heart out from the Nursery End and got the all-important wicket of the in-form Rahul with a ball that seamed back profusely to trap him lbw. The on-field umpire thought the ball was not hitting the stumps but Stokes got the decision overturned, drawing a loud roar from the crowd, through the DRS.
The grounds have witnessed packed crowds on all days of the three Tests held so far and despite being a Monday morning, a sea of England and Indian fans queued up outside the Lord's hours before play.
With the last batting pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Reddy in the centre, India struggled to 95 for seven after the first hour of play, with another 98 runs needed.
With pitch playing tricks, Jadeja and Reddy looked to defend rather than counterattack. Stokes, the warrior that he is, bowled a nine-over spell.

‘One fifty partnership could've changed it': Shubman Gill on India's 22-run loss against England

Following India's narrow 22-run defeat to England in the third Test at Lord's, captain Shubman Gill said he was extremely proud of the fight his team showed. However, he admitted that just one fifty-run partnership could have changed the course of the game. Gill also rued Rishabh Pant's run out in the first innings, saying it proved costly. 'We could have had a 70 to 80-run lead, and may not have had to chase nearly 200 on a tricky fifth-day track,' he said. Ravindra Jadeja's gritty unbeaten 61 off 181 balls went in vain as India, chasing 193, were bowled out for 170 in the final session of the match. At 112-8, Jadeja fought gamely with support from Jasprit Bumrah (5 off 54) and Mohammed Siraj (4 off 30), taking the contest deep in what turned out to be a classic Test finish. India's top order had collectively failed, and the visitors eventually fell short, handing England a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The collapse was engineered by England's pace trio - Jofra Archer (3/55), Ben Stokes (3/48), and Brydon Carse (2/30). 'Extremely proud. It was as close a Test match as it can get - played over five days and came down to the last session,' Gill said at the post-match interview. 'I was pretty confident of our chances with plenty of batting left. We needed a couple of 50-run partnerships but we weren't able to get that.'

Shoaib Bashir ruled out due to injury for remainder of England vs India Test series; check details

Shoaib Bashir, England's offspinner has been ruled out of the final two matches of the ongoing Test series against India after sustaining an injury on his finger. Despite the setback, Bashir's contribution to his team's dramatic 22-run victory has left a mark on the series. Shoaib Bashir will miss the upcoming Test matches due to a fractured finger on his non-bowling hand. He sustained the injury on the little finger of his left hand, during a valiant attempt to take a return catch off Ravindra Jadeja's powerful drive on day three of the third Test at Lord's. The young bowler will now face surgery later this week. Despite the injury, Shoaib Bashir displayed remarkable resilience. He returned to bat in England's second innings, facing nine balls and scoring two runs before becoming Washington Sundar's fourth wicket. England set India a target of 193, and Bashir's determination didn't stop there. Despite spending much of the fourth innings off the field, he answered captain Ben Stokes' call in the 55th over, with India's Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah frustrating England with a stubborn 35-run partnership. With his ring and little fingers splinted and heavily bandaged, Bashir bowled three overs in a tense middle session. His perseverance paid off after the tea break when he delivered the decisive blow. Bowling to No. 11 Mohammed Siraj, Bashir tossed up a delivery. The ball rolled down Siraj's bat, trickled onto the leg stump, and dislodged a single bail. This wicket sealed England's victory, giving them a 2-1 series lead in the five-match series. "It's not good news for Bash," Ben Stokes said after the match. "Very disappointing for us as a team and for him, a big shame. "The courage that he showed to go out there and bat at the end for us and willing to sit there on the bench waiting for his moment to come on and bowl just proves how much it means to everyone who gets the opportunity to put the shirt on, that not even a couple of breaks is going to stop anyone getting out there," he added. With Shoaib Bashir ruled out, England must now look to replacements for the fourth Test, starting July 23 at Old Trafford. Liam Dawson, who recently returned to international cricket with a brilliant 4 for 20 in a T20I against West Indies, is a strong contender. Fellow left-arm spinner Jack Leach is also in the mix. Stokes praised Bashir's readiness, noting, 'Every time I looked around at the bench and asked for a drink, I'd just see Bash's little head peeking through there ready to go.' The captain's tactical use of spin to break India's batting rhythm proved effective, and Dawson or Leach will likely be tasked with filling Bashir's shoes. Shoaib Bashir claimed 10 wickets at an average of 54.10 during the series. In the recent match, he took 1 for 59 from 14.1 overs in India's first innings, and his 1 for 6 from 5.5 overs in the second innings included the match-defining wicket of Siraj. As England prepares for the next Test, Bashir's absence will be a big blow for the team.
