Canadian mother reportedly detained in the U.S. as Trump-voting husband feels 'totally blindsided'

Yahoo5 hours ago
A Canadian woman has been detained in the U.S. during her green card interview for being in the U.S. illegally, California-based KGTV reported Thursday.
Cynthia Olivera's green card interview was on June 13 in California. As she went into the interview room, her husband, Francisco Olivera waited outside. 'We feel totally blindsided. I want my vote back,' Francisco told KGTV after Cynthia was detained.
Francisco is a U.S. citizen and self-identified Trump voter. The U.S. president's promises to deport dangerous criminals appealed to the couple but they didn't think Cynthia's lack of legal U.S. status would be a problem — no criminal charges were found under Cynthia's name by KGTV. 'The U.S. is my country,' Cynthia told KGTV from an immigration detention centre in El Paso, Texas. 'That's where I met my husband. That's where I went to high school, junior high, elementary. That's where I had my kids,' she continued.
The 45-year-old was born in Canada and taken to the U.S. by her parents when she was 10 years old. In 1999, when Cynthia was 19 years old, U.S. border officials determined she was living in the country without a legal status and an order was obtained to deport her.
After being removed, Cynthia returned within a few months to the U.S. by driving to San Diego from Mexico, The Guardian reports. 'They didn't ask me for my citizenship – they didn't do nothing. They just waved me in,' Cynthia told KGTV.
For the next 25 years, Cynthia is reported to have worked in Los Angeles where she paid her taxes and provided for her family. She has three children who were born in the U.S. As she navigated the onerous task of obtaining a green card, she was granted a permit by the Biden administration in 2024 that allowed her to work legally in the U.S.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration in an emailed statement referred to Cynthia as an 'illegal alien from Canada,' The Guardian reports.
In a statement to Newsweek, the spokesperson said Cynthia was 'previously deported and chose to ignore our law and again illegally entered the country.' The statement further noted that 're-entering the U.S. without permission after being deported is a felony, and it said Olivera would remain in Ice's custody pending removal to Canada,' Newsweek reports.
Cynthia reportedly told officials that the couple can pay for her to fly to Canada, where she would live with a cousin in Mississauga, Ontario. 'Despite offering to pay for her own flight back to Canada and waive her rights to a bond hearing, she remains locked up at an ICE detention facility in El Paso, Texas,' reads a petition on change.org.
The Canadian government told KGTV that it is aware of Cynthia's case but cannot intervene because 'every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders,' Guardian reports.

'America Party' to embrace Bitcoin, Elon Musk says fiat is hopeless

'America Party' to embrace Bitcoin, Elon Musk says fiat is hopeless originally appeared on TheStreet. Elon Musk's newly launched "America Party" will embrace Bitcoin, the billionaire tech mogul confirmed. On July 6, an X user with the handle @RenatoLima_X asked Musk if America Party will embrace Bitcoin, to which the billionaire responded, "Fiat is hopeless, so yes." Earlier, Musk hinted at stacking Bitcoin by liking a comment on X. Reactions from the crypto community poured in as soon as Musk dropped the breaking announcement. Crypto entrepreneur Brandon Turp called Musk "King" in appreciation of the latest move. Ben Pham, CFO at Bitcoin-focused fund management firm Strive Funds, commented, "Save in Bitcoin, save the people, save a nation." Stephen Cole, co-founder of the Bitcoin treasury platform Castle, reposed hope in the king coin and said, "Bitcoin is hope. Let's fix the money." Dennis Porter, co-founder and CEO of the Bitcoin mining advocacy organization called Satoshi Action, called the development "massive." While the tech tycoon supported Donald Trump's presidential election and even led the Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.) under his administration, he had a public feud with the president over the flagship "big, beautiful bill." As reported earlier, Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with the two-party system in the U.S. and decided to launch a new political party. The Dogecoin team member, popularly known as @cb_doge on X, has been supporting Musk's political campaign. Enthusiasts of the meme coin had once hoped that Musk would implement DOGE payments during his stint at the D.O.G.E., given the similar nomenclature, but were met with disappointment. It was no different this X user, @DogecoinXPost, asked, if Dogecoin had a chance. Another user, @Web3Quant, asked when his EV company, Tesla, will begin accepting Bitcoin payments. As reported earlier, Tesla began accepting Bitcoin payments for vehicle purchases on March 24, 2021. But the company stopped the payment policy on May 12, 2021, owing to concerns over the negative environmental impact of Bitcoin mining. Bitwise's head of Alpha Strategies, Jeffrey Park, asked if the party will embrace the stablecoin company Tether to save fiat. Tether is the crypto company behind USDT, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. Given the fact that the GENIUS ACT dealing with stablecoin regulation has seen progress, the stablecoin market is expected to expand further. USDT is the largest stablecoin, with a market cap of $159.46 billion. It accounted for more than 62% of the total stablecoin market share at the time of Musk's confirmation of "America Party" embracing Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency jumped from $108,735.07 to as high as $109,627.25. As per Kraken, Bitcoin was trading at $109,158.81 at press time. Metals Fall as Trump Stirs Trade Uncertainty With BRICS Threat

(Bloomberg) -- Copper and other industrial metals extended losses after US President Donald Trump injected fresh uncertainty into his trade agenda with a plan to impose a 10% tariff on any country aligned with the BRICS bloc of nations. Trump's Gilded Design Style May Be Gaudy. But Don't Call it 'Rococo.' Foreign Buyers Swoop on Cape Town Homes, Pricing Out Locals Massachusetts to Follow NYC in Making Landlords Pay Broker Fees NYC Commutes Resume After Midtown Bus Terminal Crash Chaos In California, Pro-Housing 'Abundance' Fans Rewrite an Environmental Landmark That fee would be charged on top of any other tariffs and there would be no exceptions to the policy, the president said in a Sunday-night post on Truth Social. BRICS is a grouping of nations including Brazil, China, South Africa and India. Copper fell 0.7% to $9,800.50 a ton by 2:23 p.m. Shanghai time, heading for a third straight decline on the London Metal Exchange since closing at a three-month high above $10,000 a ton last week. Aluminum fell 0.8% as all major LME metals declined. The latest trade twist comes as Trump's push for new deals across the world reaches a critical stage. The president will send tariff letters to as many as 15 trade partners on Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a CNN interview. He also added that the revised tariffs will kick in on Aug. 1 and indicated that some countries may be able to negotiate beyond the president's original deadline of July 9. Industrial metals have fared reasonably well in recent months despite the economic uncertainty stemming from Trump's drive to remake US trade ties with the rest of the world. Copper has been boosted by a rush of shipments to America and falling global stockpiles, while a weaker greenback has also helped commodities priced in the currency. On the Singapore Exchange, iron ore futures dropped 0.5% to $95.30 a ton. --With assistance from Katharine Gemmell. CNN Data Chief ‘Never Thought I'd See' This Stunning Shift In Sentiment

Democrats' pride in being American has 'fallen through the floor,' CNN's chief data analyst Harry Enten has noted. Enten pointed to new survey data from Gallup which showed that just 36% of Democrats are now 'extremely' or 'very' proud to be American. It's down from 80% in 2015, when former President Barack Obama was in office, he said. 'That number has plummeted, plummeted to just 36% now in 2025, a low this century. It's fallen by more than half since 2015, as Donald Trump has become, of course, president once again this year,' said Enten. The analyst pinpointed Gen Z voters, born since 1997, as being key to the result. Some 32% have 'little' or 'no pride' in being American, he said. 'I just never thought I'd see these numbers based upon where we were a decade ago. But that's exactly where we are,' Enten said. Republicans, meanwhile, said Enten, are still 'extremely' or 'very' proud to be American. Their figure has risen, only slightly, from 90% in 2015 when Obama was in office to 92% now. 'Republicans still are extremely or very proud to be an American,' Enten said. 'Democrats, on the other hand, have seen their numbers fall through the floor, led of course by the youngest generation, Generation Z.'
