Johor Bahru bus drivers strike disrupts Singapore commute
'I was shocked, there was no information at all (on a strike),' he said.
Passengers arriving as early as 5 am found no bus services, forcing some to walk one to two kilometres across the Johor Causeway to reach workplaces in Singapore.
Saiful, who had to walk nearly two kilometres to Woodlands before getting a ride back to Tampoi, expressed frustration over the lack of prior notice.
'This situation is not only inconvenient but also affects our work and image,' he told Bernama.
A viral video showed crowds at BSI at 5.30 am due to the halted bus services.
Reports suggest the strike stemmed from drivers' dissatisfaction over salary adjustments and allowance cuts, allegedly reducing their monthly pay from RM2,800-RM2,900 to below RM2,000.
Another passenger, K. Ramesh, 40, called the situation 'ridiculous,' urging the bus company to resolve the issue swiftly.
'This affects our daily routine and careers,' he said.
Bus driver Atoi, 35, confirmed about 100 drivers began striking at 5 am in protest.
By evening, services resumed, with no further disruptions observed.
Johor Public Works Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed the incident, having monitored operations with Singapore's LTA and bus operators earlier. – Bernama

Air India completes fuel switch checks on Boeing planes after crash report
Air India, in a official statement on Tuesday, announced that it has completed the fuel control switch inspection of its Boeing fleets. NEW DELHI: (Bernama) Air India said on Tuesday (July 22) it has completed fuel switch checks on all its Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft as ordered by India's aviation regulator. An initial report this month on the June 12 crash of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner found that fuel to both engines was abruptly cut off seconds before the plane went down after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport in Gujarat state. "Air India has completed precautionary inspections on the locking mechanism of Fuel Control Switch (FCS) on all Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft in its fleet. Boeing 737 aircraft are part of the fleet of Air India Express, Air India's low cost subsidiary. "With this, the two airlines have complied with the directives of the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) issued on July 14, 2025," the airline said in a statement. "In the inspections, no issues were found with the said locking mechanism," it said. The London-bound flight AI171 carrying 242 people crashed into a medical college building. All aboard except one passenger died in the disaster, with the total death toll, including victims on the ground, being 260. The aircraft began to lose altitude before crossing the airport perimeter wall, the preliminary report found. "In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff. The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report released by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said. The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with US officials' early assessment of data, reported on July 16 that a black-box recording of dialogue between the flight's two pilots indicated it was the captain who moved the switches from "run" to "cutoff" setting. Reuters, a day later, carried a similar report, suggesting it was the captain who cut the flow of fuel. The Federation of Indian Pilots has sent legal notices to the two media organisations, calling the reports "irresponsible" and "speculative". - Bernama

Bursa Malaysia IPO pipeline healthy, on track to hit 60 new listings target for 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia is on track to achieve its target of 60 initial public offerings by the end of 2025, with 37 companies already listed this year despite ongoing global uncertainties, said CEO Datuk Fad'l Mohamed. He noted that the Malaysian stock exchange continues to serve as a robust platform for capital raising, with sustained interest from both prospective issuers and investors. He said to date, no companies have withdrawn their listing plans, and the IPO pipeline remains healthy. 'As it stands today, we still see companies exploring IPO opportunities on Bursa Malaysia. With 37 listings to date, we are well-positioned to meet our target of 60 IPOs by year-end,' he told reporters after the signing of a memorandum of collaboration (MoC) between Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX) and UEM Lestra Bhd today. Looking ahead, Fad'l said mid-cap companies are expected to continue leading the listing activity. He added that there are indications that several large IPOs may also materialise. Issuers will need to carefully consider pricing and sizing strategies to align with prevailing market conditions, ensuring that their offerings are well-structured for investor uptake, Fad'l said. Meanwhile, BCX, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bursa Malaysia, entered into a strategic collaboration with UEM Lestra, the energy transition arm of UEM Group Bhd. The partnership will pilot Malaysia's first Bilateral Energy Supply Contract (BESC) auction under the government's Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS). This auction will enable buyers to submit competitive bids for green electricity generated from UEM Lestra's large-scale hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, based on their individual electricity demand. Under the MoC, BCX will offer its Auction-as-a-Service solution to facilitate an open and transparent bidding process for renewable energy, in line with the CRESS framework. The initiative is expected to enhance liquidity on BCX, particularly through the eventual clearing and settlement of renewable energy certificates once the solar projects reach commercial operation. Fad'l emphasised that the success of the pilot auction will depend on securing credible offtakers through a fair and competitive process. He highlighted BCX's role in enabling efficient price discovery and in supporting national efforts to reform the electricity market via market-driven mechanisms. UEM Lestra CEO Harman Faiz Habib Muhammad noted that the auction provides the company with an efficient platform to seek optimal offers for its BESC initiative. He said BCX meets the company's core criteria for a price discovery platform – namely, its credibility, independence, and impartiality, particularly in avoiding competition within the same business space. UEM Lestra is currently developing several large-scale hybrid solar PV projects, including its flagship 1-gigawatt facility in Segamat, Johor. Slated for commissioning in the first quarter of 2028, the project is expected to generate over one million megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, offsetting nearly 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
