Way better than Whispering Angel: 6 must-have rosé dupes from £5.50 for your weekend picnic plans

Cosmopolitan19-05-2025
Nothing says summer to us more than soaking in the sun, Sabrina Carpenter blasting from the speakers, hanging out with your friends on a picnic blanket that has definitely seen better days, and crucially sipping on a bottle of what is often considered the world's best rosé - Whispering Angel.
With it's soft pale pink colour, so pale it could almost be water (my marker of a truly good rosé), dry, with notes of berries and florals, it is a very drinkable wine. However, at over £20 a bottle in most supermarkets, it's not the best rosé for our wallets during summer.
Thankfully, there a bunch of alternatives available perfect for getting the Whispering Angel vibe, but not the Whispering Angel price tag. Now don't get us wrong, we're still picking up a bottle of Whispering Angel for date night or a solo night in, but when we're hosting and have multiple people to feed, one of these 6 bottles under £13.00 are the best alternatives.
Yes that's right, this dupe is less than £6! It's made from grapes in a similar area to Whispering Angel and has similar notes of red fruits (redcurrant) and sweet citrus (clementine, sweet grapefruit).
It has an average of 3.8 out of five stars from reviewers on Tesco, with one reviewer saying it was "one of the best rosé I've tasted" and another said it's a "classic affordable rosé". Well that's good enough for us.
This is easily considered one TikTok's favourite dupe for Whispering Angel, having gone viral last year.
This rosé has aromas of strawberry and watermelon, and has notes of raspberry and red cherry. Wine TikToker @partnerinwineuk raved about the wine last year, praising it for it's "flavour" and "freshness."
While it usually retails for £6.99, at some points over the summer last year it was on offer for just £4.99 so keep an eye out for the deals.
Ok so technically this is an Italian wine, meaning it's not a Provence speciality, like Whispering Angel. It's created using red wine grapes from northern Italy's Bardolino region and white wine techniques.
However, the colour is a near perfect match and it also has notes of nectarine and raspberry, matching the berry flavours of Whispering Angel. And at £8 a bottle, we're sure to be stocking up this summer.
Another highly rated rosé, this time from Lidl. The Côtes de Provence is made in the same region as Whispering Angel and is rated 88/100 by Lidl's in-house Master of Wine Richard Brampton, who has ranked the wine within the brand's 'Wine with Special Qualities' section.
Ok this is easily one of the most drinkable rosés I've ever had. Though it hails from Spain, it still has that light, dry and fruity notes that we love about France's Whispering Angel. Also the bottle makes it look so much more expensive than it is.
Last year ASDA introduced their answer to a Whispering Angel, hilariously named a Screaming Devil. It's got white peach, bright mango, and passion fruit aromas, along with rhubarb notes too.
Wine expert Tom Gibley, blind rated Screaming Devil against Whispering angel on his TikTok last year and Screaming Devil came out as the winner, with Tom describing it as "juicy, tasty, perfectly good rosé."
Sounds like a winner all round.

Al Pacino, 85, ‘Looking for Someone Young and Sexy' Following Split from Noor Alfallah, Says Source

Al Pacino is trying to move on from baby mama Noor Alfallah. He's been flirting with a sexy Italian journalist in Rome, but pals are urging him to adjust his expectations and stop chasing after younger gals who are totally out of his league. The 85-year-old Godfather legend had a big grin on his face as he cozied up to Caterina De Terlizzi during dinner with friends at Il Bolognese in Piazza del Popolo recently. At one point, the younger woman even gave Al a smooch on the cheek, to his delight. 'He's looking for someone young and sexy, which might seem ridiculous at his age, but Al's always had a tendency to shoot for the moon,' says an insider. 'To his credit, he still has charm and a lot of charisma.' He's been hoping to reunite with Noor, but that's not happening, says the insider. Al welcomed son Roman, his fourth child, with the American-Kuwaiti filmmaker, 31, in June 2023. 'So now he's looking for someone new,' says the insider, 'and by the looks of it he's off to a great start!' Solve the daily Crossword

Spinal Tap goes viral, Kate Bush-style, in upcoming sequel

Ask anyone on the street about the upcoming sequel to Spinal Tap, and they'd probably look at you quite strangely. Believe us, we know. For months, we've been conducting surveys with street people regarding the cultural awareness of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, and most respond with a casual, 'Oh, didn't hear about that one.' Part of that is because much of the excitement surrounding Spinal Tap these days is focused on the re-release of the original This Is Spinal Tap in honor of the film's 41st anniversary. The other half is that there hasn't been that much promotion regarding the film, its plot, or its release since its announcement. But The End will continue this fall, when Spinal Tap II hits theaters, hopefully to reviews that warrant a little more than two words. Ahead of the re-release and the new film, director and co-star Rob Reiner, who plays Marty DiBergi, the diegetic director of the movie within the movie, shared the set-up for the sequel with Collider and explained why this is all Kate Bush's fault. Reiner says that the film opens 15 years after Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) last played together. Not only had they not played together, but 'they were not talking to each other. It was bad blood.' Over the course of the film, we find out what caused the bad blood, but more interestingly, why they decided to get the band back together. Following the death of their manager, Ian Faith (played by the late Tony Hendra in This Is Spinal Tap), Faith's daughter is bequeathed the group's contract, which stipulates one more performance. Reiner continues: [Hope] thinks, 'Well, this is worthless because they haven't played in 15 years. Who knows about these guys?' Then we thought of Kate Bush, who had a song of hers on that show, Stranger Things. All of a sudden, there was a resurgence of this song and her and everything. We said, 'That's it.' We get a famous rocker or somebody to be screwing around in a soundcheck, sings a song of Tap's, somebody catches it on an iPhone, sticks it up on TikTok, it goes viral, and all of a sudden this last concert becomes valuable. That became the premise of the film. That's as much as I can tell you, but that's how we came up with the idea. We can't wait to see what streaming series caused 'Sex Farm' to break like the wind on TikTok, but as far as premises for a legacy sequel to a landmark mockumentary goes, that's not the worst in the world. Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is gonna rock you in theaters on September 12. Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated that Ian Faith played Tony Hendra. This was incorrect. The late Tony Hendra played the character Ian Faith in This Is Spinal Tap. This has been corrected throughout. We regret the error. More from A.V. Coldplay's Chris Martin Jokingly Warns Fans Over Kiss Cam After CEO Scandal

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin slyly side-stepped the viral footage of Astronomer CEO, Andy Byron, embracing his employee Kristin Cabot — despite being married to another woman — at one of the band's concerts. Martin danced around the unexpected viral impact of Coldplay's Wednesday, July 16, show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, when he returned to the stage on Saturday, July 19, at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. This time, he made it abundantly clear to fans that they might end up on the jumbotron. 'We'd like to say hello to some of you in the crowd and put some of you on the big screen,' Martin, 48, told fans at the latest Music of the Spheres Tour stop in Wisconsin, according to fan-shot video footage. "How we're going to do that is we're going to use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen." Martin then laughed, before adding: "Please, if you haven't done your makeup, do your makeup now!" Concert Kiss Cam Gone Wrong: Why The World is Obsessed with the Coldplay Kiss Cam Story Byron, who, according to multiple reports is married to Megan Kerrigan Byron, was caught on Coldplay's kiss cam with his arms wrapped around Astronomer's chief people officer. Both Astronomer executives quickly ducked out of sight once they realized they were on the jumbotron. 'Whoa, look at these two. Alright, come on. You're OK! Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy. I'm not quite sure what to do,' Martin joked on stage in the immediate aftermath of the awkward moment. Martin then admitted, 'Holy s***. I hope we didn't do something bad.' The Coldplay singer tried making light of the situation as the kiss cam segment continued by asking the next loved-up pair if they were 'a legitimate couple.' Unfortunately for Byron and Cabot, the whole ordeal was filmed by a Coldplay fan and quickly went viral when the footage was shared via TikTok. Astronomer subsequently confirmed in a statement on Friday that it was launching a 'formal investigation' into the matter. While Byron was initially put on temporary leave, Astronomer announced he'd resigned from the company on Saturday, July 19. 'Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met,' a spokesperson for Astronomer told Us Weekly in a statement. 'Andy Byron has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted. The Board will begin a search for our next Chief Executive as Cofounder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy continues to serve as interim CEO.' The jumbotron scandal has been a hot topic via social media, racking up millions of views via multiple platforms and leading to celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen, Bethenny Frankel and Katie Nolan weighing in. Coldplay Jumbotron Seemingly Catches Astronomer CEO Andy Byron Cuddling Woman Who's Not His Wife 'I do not give two f***s about these cheaters,' Teigen, 39, wrote to her fans via her Instagram Story. 'My God, it's consuming you all. Are you OK?' Former Real Housewives of New York City star Frankel, 54, argued that Byron and Cabot picked the least discrete venue possible for their apparent PDA. 'What's wrong with a Motel 6? Who could you not run into at a Coldplay concert?' Frankel argued via a social media video. '[There could be] your third grade gym teacher, your gynecologist, your college fraternity brother [or] your daughter's cheerleading captain. Like, it's not like it was a Metallica concert. … It's a pretty mainstream concert.' Morgan Wallen, Luke Bryan and Big Sean were among the multiple touring music acts to reference the incident on stage in the last few days. Us Weekly has reached out to Astronomer and to both executives for comment on the incident. Solve the daily Crossword
