Pictured: the drug smugglers jailed for plotting £18.4m cocaine heist

Four men, including two from Essex, have been jailed for a combined total of more than 82 years after they plotted to smuggle millions of pounds' worth of cocaine into the country. Scott Johnston, 38, and Edwin Tabora Baca, 33, were spotted at sea last September and arrested after a 28-mile boat chase during which they 230kg of cocaine overboard. Essex defendants Michael May, 47, and Terry Willis, 44, were involved in organising the collection of the cocaine, which was worth £18.4million. All four were jailed after they were convicted importing Class A drugs. Johnston, of Havant, Sussex, and May, of Brentwood, Essex, had denied the charge and stood trial at Truro Crown Court where they were found guilty by a jury. Excuse – Edwin Rabora Baca claimed he was a tourist who had been asked to go on a fishing trip (Image: National Crime Agency) Johnston was jailed for 24 years while May was jailed for 19 years. Tabora Baca, of Barcelona, Spain, initially claimed to police he was a tourist who had accepted an invitation from two strangers to go fishing, but he later admitted the same charge and was jailed for 17 years and seven months. Willis, of Chelmsford, faced the same count in addition to money laundering and possession of firearm – he admitted all the charges and was jailed for 21 years and eight months. The National Crime Agency (NCA) began investigating when Johnston and Tabora Baca were arrested after their inflatable boat ran aground on Gwynver Beach, Penzance on September 13 last year. Earlier that day, they had been seen collecting items from a larger ship at sea and sped off when officers tried to intercept the vessel. A chase unfolded and the criminals threw six large bales into the see which contained a total of 230kg or powder. Specialist analysts later identified the substance as high-purity cocaine. After the boat ran aground, Johnston and Tabora Baca tried to run off along with a third man, Peter Williams, 43, who was also on the boar. They were quickly caught by Border Force officers and arrested. The investigation was referred to NCA officers, who trawled through CCTV footage, call data and phone messages which uncovered the involvement of Alex Fowlie, 35, and Bobbie Pearce, 29. It emerged Fowlie was responsible for buying the boat, with audio messages retrieved from his phone by officers revealing he also began organising further at-sea drug collections just days after his co-conspirators were arrested on September 13. Pearce, May and Willis's roles included lying in wait on the Cornish coast where they expected the cocaine to be dropped off to them. Sentenced – Scott Johnston was imprisoned for 24 years (Image: National Crime Agency) Williams, of Havant, and Pearce, of Brentwood, will be sentenced on August 21, while Fowlie, of Chichester, will be sentenced on September 5. NCA Senior Investigating Officer, Barry Vinall, said: 'These are substantial sentences for four men who didn't care about the misery cocaine causes, they just wanted to make a profit. 'Cocaine is one of the most harmful illegal drugs in the UK, linked to thousands of deaths and fuelling violent crime that wrecks communities and lives. 'Working together, Border Force stopped cocaine worth millions from making it onto UK streets and the National Crime Agency ensured that the group behind its importation faced justice.'
