Steelers training camp preview: Defense

Steelers training camp preview: Defense

USA Today3 days ago
It's no mystery how the Pittsburgh Steelers do business when it comes to defense. The organization isn't shy about spending big money on defensive players, even if the results on the field don't line up. 2025 looks like more of the same and despite lots of big names and big contracts, we worry this group will continue to underachieve as long as defensive coordinator Teryl Austin is in charge.
With training camp just a few days away, let's take a look at each of the Steelers' positional units.
Defensive line
The Steelers front office made a focused effort to upgrade the defensive line after last season's struggles. Out are Larry Ogunjobi and Montravius Adams and in are rookie Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black. The anchor on this line is the ageless Cameron Heyward who will lead this group and hopefully can get a spark out of nose tackle Keenau Benton as well.
For depth, the Steelers have a lot of guys who will be battling for a handful of spots, but no one who inspires confidence. Logan Lee, Derek Lowry, DeMarvin Leal and Isaiahh Loudermilk are the incumbents with three free agent additions, Daniel Ekuale, Esezi Otomeow and Dominique Davis will battle for a final spot on the roster.
Outside linebacker
Easily the strongest unit on the defense, it's time for this group to play up to the talent they have. T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jake Sawyer is as good a four-man rotation in the NFL and after Watt's massive new contract, it's time for this group to start getting after the quarterback.
The Steelers only mustered 40 sacks in 2024. This was the third-straight season Pittsburgh failed to top 50 sacks after hitting that mark for five straight years.
Inside linebacker
If outside linebacker is the best unit on the defense, inside linebacker might be second. The Steelers added Malik Harrison in free agency to bolster depth and the healthy return of Cole Holcomb gives the Steelers two starter-quality inside linebackers as reserves.
The reason Holcomb and Harrison won't start this season is that the team already has an excellent tandem of starters. Patrick Queen came over last year as a free agent from the Baltimore Ravens, and once he got comfortable with the defense, he really excelled.
But the player we can't wait to see in training camp and this season is second-year linebacker Payton Wilson. Wilson only played 45 percent of the defensive snaps as a rookie last season but was still fourth on the team with 78 total tackles.
Cornerback
The Steelers rebuilt the cornerback depth chart in the offseason. Donte Jackson signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency and the team quickly signed veteran Darius Slay to replace. Slay was going to be the team's starter on the outside, along with Joey Porter Jr.
Then, late in June, the Steelers pulled off a blockbuster trade to land All-Pro Jalen Ramsey. Slay and Ramsey join Porter, as well as Cory Trice Jr. and James Pierre, as the primary outside cornerbacks. Trice and Pierre head into training camp on the roster bubble.
At slot cornerback, there's a three-man battle between Beanie Bishop, Brandin Echols and rookie Donte Kent with the likelihood one of those guys doesn't make the final 53-man roster.
Safety
The one unit on defense that took a huge hit this offseason was safety. The trade that landed the Steelers' cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith cost them All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Even though Fitzpatrick hadn't played up to his expected production the last two seasons, he was still far and away the best safety on the team and wouldn't be easy to replace.
One safety spot is locked down with the big-hitting DeShon Elliott. Elliott was a strong defender last season and will have to take on an even heavier workload this season. The battle in training camp will be to see who takes over Fitzpatrick's starting spot.
Pittsburgh added Juan Thornhill in free agency well ahead of the trade and his experience should give him the best chance to take over. But we won't rule out veteran Quindell Johnson and rookie Sebastian Castro to put Thornhill at training camp.

Liverpool want England under-21 hero as centre-back signing

Liverpool have strengthened in a number of positions so far during this summer transfer window - but centre-back is currently the exception. Virgil van Dijk is safely secured to a contract until 2027 but there is uncertainty for others in the position. Ibrahima Konate, for example, could be sold if no new contract is agreed. LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Real Madrid are interested and could put in an opportunistic offer before the window closes. Joe Gomez suffered another injury-affected campaign and the club were willing to sell him last summer. He probably wouldn't be first choice to step in next to Van Dijk if Konate leaves and the Reds could find themselves requiring a senior centre-back. There is no Jarell Quansah of course since the England under-21 international moved on to Bayer Leverkusen for around £30m earlier this summer. Guehi tipped to replace Konate Marc Guehi has been tipped as the leading candidate to arrive - a player at the peak of his powers who could make an immediate impact. At 25 he might be a little older than Liverpool's usual transfer targets but provides an immediate solution to the gap Konate's departure opens. That said, Liverpool remain interested in finding the best young centre-back talent and an intriguing link has emerged between the Premier League champions and Charlie Cresswell. Charlie Cresswell stars for England U21 The 22-year-old was a star of the recent UEFA Euro U21 win alongside Quansah, Tyler Morton and Harvey Elliott. The former Leeds defender was named to the team of the tournament and alongside Elliott became only the THIRD English players in history to win in back-to-back Euro U21 tournaments following victory in 2023. Cresswell was sold to Toulouse last summer following a loan spell at Millwall and has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in the French top flight. His form across 31 Ligue 1 games - not to mention the Euros success - has put him on the radar of Liverpool and he has been named as a potential target alongside Ajax starlet Jorrel Hato. Liverpool looking at Charlie Cresswell That's according to a new report from transfer expert Ben Jacobs, who claims that Liverpool recruiters believe Cresswell fits the bill for a central defensive arrival. 'Guehi is kind of the exception to the rule,' Jacobs told the Born N'Red YouTube channel. "So players like Jorrel Hato, and I would add Charlie Cresswell as well — who used to be at Leeds United — they've been looked at because they're in that 18 to 22 profile." Cresswell wanted to take over from Van Dijk? Liverpool will eventually need to move on from Van Dijk, who turned 34 this month. And rather than throw a young player in at the deep end, there is the opportunity for the new arrival to learn from the more senior player in the squad before being eventually groomed for a takeover. "And Liverpool love a transition where they actually find the player they need before the player that departs goes — as shown also by Mamardashvili and Alisson,' Jacobs explains. "And as a consequence, if they can buy a bit younger, you take the pressure off." Cresswell is under contract at Toulouse until 2028 and it remains to be seen if Liverpool follow up their interest this summer. **👉 **Liverpool set to increase transfer budget by £200m 🔗

Projecting the Steelers starting defense ahead of training camp

The defense has been the backbone of the Pittsburgh Steelers for a very long time. But last season, this group ran out of gas late in the season and didn't do its part to keep this team in the mix. Pittsburgh finished 10-7 but backed into the playoffs and got blown out by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round. This offseason has been a busy one for the Steelers as they have turned over a significant number of players on the roster, including the defense. We decided to do an updated projection for the starting defense with training camp upon us and by our count, there are going to be six new starters on the defensive side of the football. Try it free Who needs the trade deadline when you have the waiver wire? The Mets, after another day with a flurry of transactions that impacted their bullpen, got another strong performance from a reliever group that's been battered by injuries and heavy usage. Advertisement Frankie Montas gave the Mets 5 ²/₃ innings in a 3-2 win over the Angels on Tuesday at Citi Field, but the Mets bullpen was again tasked with pitching significant innings for a second straight game. And even with everyone in the sport — especially president of baseball operations David Stearns — aware the team needs upgrades in that area, the Mets got what they needed from some unexpected places. On Tuesday, it started with a key scoreless inning from right-hander Rico Garcia, who has spent the past week bouncing between the Mets and the Yankees. Advertisement 'There's been a lot of traveling, for sure,' Garcia said. 'I'm trying to find my place and do whatever the team needs me to do.' Whatever team that is. He was designated for assignment when the Mets were in Kansas City and went home to Hawaii for the All-Star break. 3 Rico Garcia, who pitched a scoreless inning, throws a pitch in the seventh inning of the Mets' 3-2 win over the Angels on July 22, 2025. Corey Sipkin for New York Post Advertisement CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS Garcia was then claimed by the Yankees on Monday during the break, flew to Atlanta on Wednesday, pitched for the Yankees in Atlanta on Friday — his lone poor outing of his four in the majors this year — was waived by the Yankees and claimed by the Mets and flew to New York on Monday before being activated for Tuesday's game. 'You've just power through it,' Garcia said of the whirlwind. 'You can't think about it too much because then you start looking for excuses. They don't care about excuses. They just want results. I do what I can.' The 31-year-old entered with a runner on first and two outs in a one-run game in the top of the sixth and got Luis Rengifo to ground into a force-out to end the inning. Dale Zanine-Imagn Images He pitched around a one-out single by Nolan Schanuel and a wild pitch in the seventh, getting Zach Neto and Mike Trout swinging before Reed Garrett finished the inning. And Ryne Stanek closed it with Edwin Díaz unavailable after pitching on consecutive days. Garcia's performance aided a pen that will undoubtedly have some significant additions by the July 31 trade deadline, but first saved the Mets with six innings of one-run ball after Kodai Senga lasted just three innings in Monday's win. 3 Rico Garcia, who pitched a scoreless inning, looks up to the sky after exiting in the seventh inning of the Mets' win over the Angels. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post On that night, Carlos Mendoza went to the just-arrived Kevin Herget after removing Senga and the right-hander pitched 2 ¹/₃ shutout frames before Chris Devenski allowed a run in the seventh. Herget, whose contract had just been purchased from Triple-A Syracuse, was optioned back to the minors after the game, while Devenski was designated for assignment. But for a Mets team in need of wins, they provided some strong innings while they wait for reinforcements.
