Netaj Launches Nawat: "Iraq's First VC Studio"

Netaj -- a Baghdad-based innovation firm that offers venture support, strategic consulting, and capability-building for entrepreneurs and institutions -- has announced the official launch of Nawat, which it describes as the country's first-ever Venture Capital (VC) Studio.
According to a press release, Nawat is designed to identify, support, and invest in high-potential Iraqi startups through a tailored 6-month journey that combines mentorship, product development, market access, and funding readiness.
Wissam Mattout (pictured), CEO of Netaj, said:
"Nawat is a movement to reimagine how startups are built and backed in Iraq. We are bridging the gap between raw talent and structured capital, offering founders a launchpad to scale both locally and globally.
"For too long, Iraqi entrepreneurs have had to build in isolation. Nawat will equip them with the expertise, tools, and capital they need, not just to survive, but to lead the next wave of innovation in the region."
The studio is open to 40 startups, segmented across three tracks:
Ideation stage
MVP/Prototype stage
Early-established startups
Each startup receives customized support, including expert-led bootcamps, one-on-one consultations, mentorship from industry veterans, and direct access to investors through demo days and curated matchmaking.
"This is Iraq's moment," said Mattout. "If we want to build serious startups, we need serious infrastructure. Nawat is the missing puzzle piece - designed for founders, by founders."
Nawat offers a hybrid investment model, combining:
In-kind investment (product development, branding, digital tools) valued between $10K-$25K.
Direct financial investment ranging from $25K-$250K using convertible notes or equity.
Netaj aims to invest in the top 5 to 10 startups that demonstrate traction, scalability, and founder commitment to operational growth.

Iraq ramps up Umm Qasr Port to quadruple capacity
Shafaq News – Basra Iraq's Umm Qasr Port in Basra province is undergoing modernization to expand capacity and streamline cargo operations, targeting an increase in throughput from one million to four million containers annually. The move follows Iraq's General Company announcement of a master plan to establish Iraq as a regional supply chain hub. The port, a vital gateway for Iraq's global trade, is being upgraded with expanded berths, advanced storage yards, and digital customs systems designed to accelerate clearance and enhance logistics efficiency. Multiple investment firms are involved in the overhaul; UAE-based Gulftainer is managing key berths and storage zones, while China's Lurin Investment is leading the expansion of roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) terminals and rear storage areas. Both companies, working with Iraqi teams, are implementing electronic management platforms to cut dwell times and boost performance. 'Operations at the Gulftainer-run terminal have significantly improved in recent years,' the company's regional director, Ibrahim Sarhan, told Shafaq News. 'Our digital system plans storage before vessels arrive, reducing wait times and increasing operational output.' He added that the facility spans 450,000 square meters and includes refrigerated warehouses, 24/7 customs, and security services. 'Customs clearance now averages under 48 hours, accelerating cargo movement, particularly in oil and gas.' Meanwhile, Lurin Investment is developing Berths 22, 23, and 24 using gravity wall engineering resistant to seismic activity, according to Naim Aboud, chief engineer at the Resident Engineer Directorate. The adjoining storage yards cover 384,100 square meters and are currently 50% complete. Aboud also noted that Berths 12 to 15 are nearly complete at 97%, while the BTM container yard is fully operational, covering 400,000 square meters with a capacity of 700,000 to 850,000 containers annually. Additional upgrades are advancing. Mohammad Taher Fadel, the port's deputy technical manager, reported that Berth 11, operated by Gulftainer, measures 375 meters with an adjacent 307,000-square-meter container yard handling 636,000 containers yearly. The new berths under Lurin's supervision extend 550 meters and will add 850,000 containers to overall capacity, bringing the combined throughput of upgraded areas to 1.2 million containers. These facilities also support refrigerated, empty, and general cargo handling. However, transportation expert Basel Al-Khafaji had warned that legacy constraints still hamper growth. 'Port drafts haven't been deepened for over 40 years,' he told Shafaq News. 'Ships are limited to 25,000 tons due to shallow docking zones. Deepening to 20–25 meters is essential for accommodating larger vessels and increasing import volumes.'

The achievement, recognized by seed distributor Agrico, comes after more than 16 years of persistent hard work and commitment in his fields. "The first year I planted, they recognized this potato as number one in quality," Jalal recounted. "The second year, it was still the first. After more than six years of consistent top performance, they declared, 'Enough, you must be first at the level of all of Iraq!'" Jalal's journey began modestly, cultivating a small plot of land over a decade and a half ago. Today, his operation has expanded to 250 dunams (approximately 625,000 square meters). His consistent success led to repeated evaluations by Agrico representatives. He attributes his success to daily vigilance. "I visit my potato fields every day for watering, applying necessary plant nutrients and pest control, and continuous monitoring,' he said. Meanwhile, Hassan Hilmi, a representative for Agrico - a prominent Dutch seed potato company - confirmed Jalal's status to Rudaw. "We confirm that Mr. Bashir is the first, and we always reference him as a model for our farmers," Hilmi stated. Agrico works with some 300 Iraqi farmers who collectively produce around 600 tons of the Riviera variety annually. Beyond the Riviera, Jalal cultivates six other potato varieties, all of which are also recognized for their exceptional quality. Kamal Arif, head of the Sheikhan Farmers' Union, noted Jalal's unique dedication, telling Rudaw, "We have nearly 600 farmers, but there are only 11 to 12 like Mr. Bashir, yet he stands out from all of them.' The Kurdistan Region's favorable climate and fertile land contribute significantly to its thriving potato industry. Approximately 50,000 dunams of Duhok's agricultural land are dedicated to potato farming, yielding about 600,000 tons annually. This robust sector is not only a source of local produce but also plays a vital role in diversifying the Region's economy. Iraq, Spain discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi president, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, reaffirmed on Sunday his commitment to improving bilateral ties between Iraq and Spain and boosting collaboration to serve the interests of the people in both countries. Rashid's remarks took place during his meeting with King Felipe VI of Spain and his wife, Queen Letizia, in the Spanish city of Seville, where he attended a ceremony honoring the leaders, heads of state, and delegations attending the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Presidency. Rashid and Iraq's First Lady, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, expressed their appreciation for the Spanish King's invitation to the conference and conveyed their hopes for its success. The Iraqi president also hailed Spain's support for the Palestinian cause, its willingness to put a stop to the violence, and its recognition of the Palestinians' right to self-determination. Additionally, Rashid expressed his hope that the conference will yield suggestions that support people's goals for security, stability, growth, and prosperity.
