Ukraine Risks Becoming to Trump What Afghanistan Was to Biden

Bloomberg2 days ago
On the face of it, the US involvement in Ukraine bears little similarity to the 20-year Afghanistan war, not least because there are no American boots on the ground in Europe.
Yet there are similarities for President Donald Trump: resolving the conflict is proving no easy task, and he risks getting shackled with responsibility — and potentially blame — the longer it goes on.

Polymarket's Derivatives Exchange Acquisition Sets Stage for a Return to US

Polymarket is returning to the U.S. The company on Monday acquired derivatives exchange and clearinghouse QCX for $112 million, paving the way for it to return to this market. The acquisition comes weeks after the Commodity Futures Trading Commission granted QCX a license to operate as a contract market. "With the acquisition of QCEX, we are laying the foundation to bring Polymarket home — re-entering the US as a fully regulated and compliant platform that will allow Americans to trade their opinions," Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan said in a press release. Polymarket operates a peer-to-peer prediction market, in which users bet on the outcome of events spanning politics, culture, and sports, with wagers denominated in cryptocurrency. The company, while based in New York City, has been barred from taking bets from U.S. residents since 2022, when the CFTC accused it of operating a derivatives trading platform without proper registration. Polymarket's users accurately predicted Donald Trump's victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris in last year's presidential race, even as many pollsters saw the contest as effectively a coin toss. Polymarket users bet nearly $3.7 billion on the outcome of the presidential election last year. Federal Probe Into Polymarket Dropped This Month In the days after the election, Coplan said Polymarket returning to the U.S. was "part of the plan." Shortly thereafter, Coplan's apartment was raided and his phone seized by FBI agents as part of a federal investigation into whether Polymarket had continued to accept U.S.-based bets in violation of its agreement with regulators. That investigation by the CFTC and Justice Department was dropped earlier this month, according to a Bloomberg report. The investigation into Polymarket was the latest in a string of Biden-era cryptocurrency cases to be closed by the Trump administration. Federal regulators earlier this year dropped cases against crypto exchanges Coinbase Global (COIN), Kraken, and Binance, as well as online brokerage Robinhood (HOOD). Polymarket is in talks to dive deeper into cryptocurrencies. The platform currently settles trades with Circle Internet Group's (CRCL) USDC, and Coplan on Wednesday told CNBC's "Squawk Box"' that it was "exploring" a stablecoin. Trump Abruptly Ends CNN Interview After Being Questioned About New Epstein Photos

President Donald Trump hung up on a CNN reporter during a phone call Tuesday that lasted a mere 30 seconds after the journalist questioned him about resurfaced images showing Jeffrey Epstein at Trump's 1993 wedding to his second wife, Marla Maples. While appearing Tuesday on 'Erin Burnett OutFront,' reporter Andrew Kaczynski shared details about the abrupt phone call with Trump that ended in name-calling. The call took place after CNN's 'KFile' found photos of Epstein and Trump that had not been widely reported on before. One photo showed the disgraced financier and sex offender attending Trump's Plaza Hotel wedding to Maples. In a separate image, Epstein was seen with Trump and his children at a Harley-Davidson Cafe that same year. CNN also released a video of Trump and Epstein chatting with each other at a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in New York in February 1999. Kaczynski told host Burnett that the call, in which he asked Trump about the images, ended with the president slamming CNN as 'fake news' and hanging up after he refused to answer questions about his past connection to Epstein. 'We were not on the phone very long. I think our call was about 30 seconds or so,' Kaczynski told Burnett. 'But when I asked him about the wedding photo, he said, he sort of paused for a second and then said, 'You've got to be kidding me,' before calling CNN 'fake news' and then hanging up on me.' In a statement to CNN, Kaczynski said, White House communications director Steven Cheung said, 'These are nothing more than out-of-context frame grabs of innocuous videos and pictures of widely attended events to disgustingly infer something nefarious.' Cheung added: 'The fact is that the president kicked [Epstein] out of his club for being a 'creep.'' Kaczynski's heated yet ultra-brief conversation with Trump comes after the Department of Justice and FBI released a two-page memo earlier this month, claiming their Epstein investigation determined that there was no evidence Epstein was murdered or had a 'client list' of powerful figures he could potentially blackmail. Following the memo release, Trump faced scrutiny over his administration's handling of the Epstein files. Trump supporters and right-wing figures called on the president and his administration to release more information. US judge rejects justice department bid to unseal Epstein grand jury materials

A judge in the US has rejected a justice department bid to unseal grand jury materials related to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The US government had filed a motion to unseal grand jury transcripts related to the former financier, who took his own life while awaiting trial in 2019. Material from grand juries is typically kept secret under US law, though exceptions can be made for a handful of reasons. In a ruling issued on Wednesday, US District Judge Robin Rosenberg said the Justice Department's request did not fall into any of these exceptions. The grand jury investigations into were held in Florida in 2005 and 2007, according to a court document. Last Friday, said attorney general Pam Bondi had been asked to release the transcripts because of "the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein". The Department of Justice said criminal cases against Epstein and his former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, were a matter of public interest. The department previously said it had around 200 documents relating to Epstein and that the FBI had thousands more. It is unknown how much of this is grand jury testimony. The judge's decision is the first ruling in a series of attempts by President Trump's administration to release more information on the case amid calls by some in his MAGA support group for the full details of Epstein's activities to be released. Mr Trump has faced renewed scrutiny over his relationship with Epstein since his administration's U-turn on the so-called 'Epstein files'. The MAGA movement had accused the Biden administration of suppressing the extent of Epstein's crimes and Mr Trump pledged to release the files during his second presidential term. But after a review of the evidence, the Justice Department said recently that no "further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted".
