Marseille airport closed as firefighters continue to battle wildfire, World News

AsiaOne09-07-2025
PARIS — A wildfire that had reached the northwestern outskirts of France's second city of Marseille lost intensity overnight on Wednesday (July 9), but the airport was closed as firefighters continued to battle the flames.
Residents who had been told to stay in their homes for their own safety were once again allowed out.
"With the fire in northern Marseilles now clearly under control, we can announce this morning that the 16th arrondissement is no longer under lockdown," Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan said in a post on social media platform X.
"I call on all Marseille residents to exercise the utmost caution in the area, as emergency services are hard at work," he added.
Local officials said that the airport would close for commercial flights to prioritise air resources, although some roads could reopen for the passage of emergency services.
It was too soon for the hundreds of residents who had fled from the wildfire to return, officials said.
Hundreds of firefighters, aided by helicopters and aircraft, had been fighting the flames, fanned by winds of up to 70 kph (43 mph) and which brought plumes of smoke over the southern coastal city.
The fire had burnt through 700 hectares (2.7 sq m) but no fatalities had been reported and hundreds of homes had been saved, regional prefect Georges-Francois Leclerc said late on Tuesday.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau told reporters late on Tuesday that the fire had been fast-moving.
Climate change has made wildfires more destructive in Mediterranean countries in recent years.
This week and last week, fires raged in northeastern Spain, on the Greek island of Crete and in Athens.

Turkey evacuates thousands as firefighters battle wildfires, World News

ANKARA — Firefighters battled wildfires across Turkey on Sunday (July 27) amid a searing Mediterranean heat-wave, with authorities evacuating more than 3,600 people from settlements in two provinces. Wildfires in the southern provinces of Mersin and Antalya as well as the central province of Usak were largely brought under control, but blazes in the northwestern province of Bursa and the northern province of Karabuk were still burning, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli told reporters. A wildfire broke out in a forested area between the Gursu and Kestel districts of Bursa, home to much of Turkey's auto industry, on Saturday. Part of a highway connecting Istanbul with the western city of Izmir was briefly closed on Saturday night due to the fire. Huge flames engulfed trees in areas close to homes in Bursa as smoke covered the sky over the city, footage showed. Some 1,765 people in Bursa's Kestel district were evacuated, Yumakli said, adding that 2,000 firefighters were struggling to battle the wildfire in the area with the help of six firefighting planes and four helicopters. In the northern province of Karabuk, where a large wildfire has been burning for five days, 1,839 people in 19 villages were evacuated, Yumakli said. Three planes and 16 helicopters are tackling the blazes in the area amid difficult conditions, he added. "We are going through risky times. This does not seem likely to end in two or three days," Yumakli said, referring to the heat-wave. Temperatures in several regions in Turkey were forecast to reach over 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday, 6 to 12 degrees above seasonal norms, Turkey's meteorological service said, as thermometers hit 50 degrees Celsius in the country's southeast on Saturday for the first time in recorded history. Fire in France forces evacuation of tourists near southern beaches

Find out what's new on ST website and app. A Canadair firefighting plane dropping water on a wildfire near Sigean, southwestern France, on July 26. TOULOUSE, France - A fire in the south of France was spreading towards a beach resort late on July 26, forcing the evacuation of two campgrounds and some local housing. Driven by strong winds, the fire in the Aude department on the Mediterranean coast, near the Spanish border, had already burned through 600 hectares after breaking out earlier in the afternoon, local officials said. Some 630 firefighters backed by about a dozen planes were battling the fire, according to the department's deputy prefect Remi Recio. Smoke from the fire was causing backups on the A9 coastal highway, AFP reporters said, though the key route to Spain remained open. Flames destroyed two houses and local officials converted a local gymnasium into a shelter, although the residents of about 10 evacuated houses were later allowed to return home. As a precautionary measure, the prefecture later ordered the evacuation of two campsites and a housing estate in the commune of Port-la-Nouvelle on the coast. Three fire fighters were treated for smoke inhalation. The national weather service had placed the Aude department on orange alert for a 'high risk' of fire on July 26. The fire comes less than a month after the Aude department was hit by a major blaze that swept through 2,100 hectares near Narbonne, mobilising 1,000 firefighters. AFP
